Jason is a DIY tragic who would rather build it himself than pay someone to do it for him. In addition to travel videos, this channel will include some videos on his creations ranging from campervan builds to landscape gardening - Jason can do half a job on anything!
Vanlife vlog on the Central Coast, NSW
I'm Jason, a retired mechanical engineer who has opted for the simple life. I built myself a campervan, rented out my house and now live fulltime on the road, vlogging my days where I just do all the stuff I love.....bushwalking, mountain biking, (paragliding?) and generally exploring new places.
Just doing my best to avoid the Christmas crowds....and not succeeding.

I love seeing footage of Central Coast especially Budgewoi. That ride around Budgewoi lake would be interesting. Did you see the castle at Buff Point. Not sure if it's still there. A chap was building it over many years. I spent every Christmas at Halekalani growing up.
Looks like another few hectic days enjoying what Central Coast have to offer. Good onya for making the most of it. 👍😁
Enjoyed the “low flying drone” footage at Brindabella through the bush. We are so lucky here in Aus to have access to beautiful bushland like this. Why do people go nuts as Xmas approaches…? Watching how packed that car park was at the shopping centre - good move you got out of there fast 😊 Thanks again (always) Jason. Pleased you are getting more followers. Enjoy Christmas 🎁
Thank you for sharing your experience’s just wondering do you see a lot of ladies doing this kind of travelling is it safe or is it best to stay in caravan parks
Thanks Liz. Yes, see plenty of women out there. During last summer in Victoria I think I saw more single women than men, mostly at the beaches. It's pretty safe if you have a reasonable amount of common sense. And never hesitate to move on if you're uncomfortable.
I usually walk 4 laps of Adcock park 6am. I usually see a van or two there, so go for it.
That's a good effort, John 😁 It was a pretty good spot. Nice and quiet but it was a rainy night...I'll definitely try it again some time.
Some nice and interesting little walks. Love that Japanese inspired garden. Shame about that yacht! What do you use for your Dash cam Jason? Merry Christmas to you and your family.
Thanks Pauline. It's just my GoPro on a suction mount in the windscreen. I turn it around either way for the various shots. It looks fuzzy through the windscreen because the van has a heated windscreen, so there's wires running through it. Merry Christmas to you too 😊
Hello again! Great to see you enjoying my backyard. Some really nice short walks around Rumbalara and Katandra reserves that you should check out if you have the time. Similar in size to Kincumber mountain but still very pretty. Hope you and your mum have a great Christmas and best wishes to you!
Thanks for the tips! I did see Rumbalara on the map, but didn't know about Katandra. That looks really nice. Not going to get there before Christmas but have added them both to my list!😁👍
Hi, new to the comments box. Love seeing footage of the Central Coast of New South Wales. I have a sister who lives in Newcastle and friends who live in Bateau Bay and Erina and we had a block of land at Foresters Beach, so it was great to see that area as I now live in Western Australia and sadly will never get back there as old age limits me. I hope you continue to enjoy your travels as I do, all the very best Judy Western Australia
Hi Judy, nice to hear from you 😊 Seems by default I end up spending a lot of time on the central coast. I do hope to get to WA one day though. Some pretty nice spots marked on my map already 😁
Great video again. Glad you got more sunshine to enjoy it more. Thanks for your videos
Thanks Steven. Getting mixed weather, but on the whole, it's pretty good at the moment. Love the warm weather!😁
Hi Jason, youtube recommends your videos to me whenever you’re in this area it seems, so I decided to give this a watch. I’ve lived on the central coast for 33 years and the population has exploded during this time. I tend to avoid the lower half of the coast now, but even the northern end has become too overcrowded and overdeveloped for my liking. I really enjoyed watching this. Thank you for reminding me that there are some really lovely spots down south, as I haven’t been down that way for quite sometime.
Hi Sharon. Even for me living in Geelong for 25 years previously, the population has gone through the roof....progress, so they say 😂 Still good that there's so many nice places to see though. I've spent most of this year around this area 😂
Hi Jason. Our weather has been similar to what you've been experiencing lately but without the really high temps. We had heavy rain and thunder this morning followed by sunny, cloudless skies this afternoon and now seems like the wind is getting up now. Looking very choppy down at the beach. Thanks another great video.😊 Cheers Helen
Thanks Helen😊 I'm guessing it's a fair bit cooler over your side. It's funny how the ocean has suddenly warmed up in the last few weeks here. Not sure if you get the warm currents in summer....I know Victorian oceans are freezing all year round 😂
Hi Jason Been enjoying your videos. Love this one as we did live on the central coast for 26 years . We live on the hill at Point Clare. We know live in Wagga enjoy the country life and retirement. You are very informative on a lot of areas to hike. Yes , Erina shopping area become a “hell” hole at Christmas time. It crazy. Enjoy your time around the coast and Merry Christmas. You have made beautiful video for us all to enjoy. Keep it up. 😊
Thanks Connie 😊 That's a fair change going from Point Clare to Wagga. Most people look for a sea change (apparently) 😂 Merry Christmas to you too.
Thanks for posting Jason..I lived in Wamberal and went to school in Erina in the 1960s. There's certainly been a lot of changes since then.
It would have been a far outpost back in the 60's. Now the whole area is just an extension of Sydney.
If I get a boat, I think I will get a security camera live feed set up to check on things when away.
That would be pretty upsetting to find your boat washed up like that. Even if you saw it break free though, the water was so rough I doubt you could do anything about it. I saw another the next day with just a mast sticking up out of the water....not sure if that was a recent sinking...
@@MakingStuffGoingPlaces Ah boating, a lifestyle of adventure. A sunken boat must be heartbreaking stuff. I guess if they are just on the hook (anchor) then its constant risk as compared to an actual mooring ball which is tied to a huge sunken concrete block.
Hi Jason, great fan of your vlogs am a subscriber, it's funny I live opposite Duffy's Road reserve and observing something I take for granted every morning when I walk my dog if you are up that way again is it possible to give me a couple of lessons in using a drone my hobby is photography and have bought a drone and haven't used it it stares at me in the corner and calls me a coward lol.
Thanks Alan 😁 What drone did you buy? Have you ever used it? They're actually very easy to use. If you can find a time when there's not too many dogs on the oval, it would be a perfect place to do some basic practice. Just keep in mind you need to be 30m away from people, so might need to land it if someone comes.
Funny, lots of places I haven't been too . Even though I've lived here so long. 😅
Always good when there's more places close by to explore. Stops us getting bored 😁👍
I went to Terrigal on Friday and it was a lovely sunny day. Hardly any one there but today, Saturday, it’s packed. What a difference from Friday 🙁
Definitely a beach day today! I got to Pearl Beach at 7am, but it's filled up now.
Another great video Jason. You're taking us to great places - that I've got to get to myself. I notice that you add a dose of, what I'm guessing, is Creatine to your brekky before chowing out? I always look forward to my Wednesday and Saturday mornings, coffee in hand and watching your videos. Thanks as always for the virtual holiday. Sean.
Thanks Sean 😊 It's amazing what you can find on Google maps. Yeah, when I'm riding a lot, I have a half dose of creatine every day. Makes a very noticeable difference to my stamina.
@@MakingStuffGoingPlaces I'll have to try (Creatine) it out Jason.
@SeanC1959 it's the only supplement I've tried that does something noticeable...not that I've tried many....mainly protein supplements. Creatine basically increases stamina. Doesn't do anything if your not exercising, but if your walking or anything more than that, you'll notice it. Put my dad on to it who was in really bad shape and he though it was amazing. He could check the mailbox without collapsing on the way back 😂
Oh and get it from chemist warehouse. The prices vary drastically and I get Inc. brand which is usually best value.
@@MakingStuffGoingPlaces Ironically Jason I ordered 2 x 500g containers of the one from Chemist Warehouse about 2 hours ago. Looks like the same as the one you use. Thanks for the heads up. Oh, I also got a huge discount which reduced the total price to under $60! Including postage.
It’s the silly season shops & roads are crazy another great location Merry Christmas 🎄
Merry Christmas to you too, Coral. Hope you survive all the holiday makers descending on your area!😁👍
Another great one. Erina fair would be Xmas shopping chaos right now. Definitely hard to find parking that’s not undercover. I haven’t seen some of those spots around Gosford so I’ll definitely check them out when I’m there again soon. I’m keen to see the Japanese Gardens. I was right near there recently but didn’t even know they were there. It’s getting very busy around the coast now that school is out. Wishing you a Merry Christmas. Hope you have a lovely day with your Mum!
It's funny that Gosford seemed so quiet. Might be the place to go 😂 I think I'm getting out of here though, it so busy everywhere. Not sure anywhere else will be better, but guess I'll find out. Merry Christmas to you too, Sally.
Hi Jason. We traveled 11 years full time in a caravan, took us 3 years up the east coast to get to Townsville and you are still showing us stuff we missed.Looking forward to seeing your travels.Have a good and safe Christmas with your mum and your family 😊
I can totally relate to that, Jeff. I've been in the van for a year and mostly only been between Sydney and Newcastle 😂 so much to see! Have a good Christmas!👍
Good show merry Christmas 🤶
Thanks Scott. Merry Christmas to you too 😊👍
G'day Jason.. I've been watching your videos for a while now and have enjoyed your narrative. I live at Terrigal and am amazed at the new places in the area you have made me aware of. I also travel in my van, but with the cost of fuel these days, you've inspired me to see more of my local area (Sydney, Newcastle and Blue Mountains). Thanks for the interesting videos.. cheers.
Thanks for saying hi, David!😊 Yeah, fuel cost is a pain but I've really found you don't need to drive 100's of KMs. Might seem weird, but hanging out within a few hours of home isn't a bad thing!😁👍
Another great Video Jason! Gives Me a few Ideas for when We go to Sydney in February. Can give us an Idea what time your Premier will be on Wednesday? I will tune in!!
Thanks Jason 😁 I'll probably schedule the video for 5:15am as usual.
@@MakingStuffGoingPlaces Ok I'll make sure I'm up! 🤞
I'll be checking the timestamp in your comments 😂😉 Also....I'll still be sleeping....I hope
Seems when it's raining everyone heads to the Shopping Centre! lol I'm on the Far North Coast of NSW the Cicada's aren't anywhere near as loud (probably less of them?) as Sydney'ish way.
Yeah, the Cicadas are bordering on causing hearing damage in some places. Crazy! And I've never been peed on so much 😂
Hi Jason, yes the centres here on the coast are crazy at this time of year. My rule is either get in early or stay home. I can recall in years gone by Erina Fair got so bad the Police were turning people away.
😂 oh wow! I can see it coming to that.
Oops Merry Christmas as well! I'm sure to watch you, my child will wake me early wanting to open presents but my husband will want a sleep in after Midnight Mass. From 5-6am is my time of the day. I'm not going to be late for squad swimming today though!! Cheers
Merry Christmas to all of you too!
I appreciate the different activities you did today! That Japanese garden looked serene. The cicadas there are in steroids lol
Been a long time since I've done and galleries. I don't mind a quick walk through them every now and then, though the exhibits in that one were....well...art.
Morning!! That rain cloud footage is amazing. How is it in the van during a huge storm?
Morning Daisy 😁 Heavy rain on the roof is noisy and the van rocks in the wind...but other than that, it's fine 😂
The cicadas are terrible this year.
Seems to be a lot of them!
Good work..
Thanks Geoff 😁👍
Hi Jason, The controller you are using for your drone is it using your iPhone for the screen or does it have its own screen, and are you happy with it ? Your answer to these questions will make my decision of which to purchase a lot less stressful. Thank you in appreciation. Leith
Hi Leith. Have a look at the reply to Peter in this video. Pjpw2330i think his user name is. The RCN3 is a cost compromise. It's $200 more for the one with built in controller. Yes that would be more convenient, but mine works fine. I use an Android phone, but it works with iPhone I believe. There are heaps of video reviews and comparisons of the DJI Neo on RUclips. If you don't want a drone that will follow you autonomously, then get the Mini 3 instead as it has better picture quality.
@ Jason , thank you so much for all that information. It is much appreciated
Another engaging video, Jason. Thank you. I have to say, the DJI Neo produces some great video. Seems very smooth. Or do you employ some editing tricks to get it like that? Do you use the RC-N3 controller with it. I was also wondering what the effective flying range of it is. Do you try to always keep it in sight? Peter
Thanks Peter. I do adjust the colour on the Neo footage as it is a little washed out in bright conditions, but no image stabilisation. The footage is pretty good, though you have to fly it smoothly as well as it jerks sometimes if you aren't smooth on the controls. Max flight distance is about 2.1km in total, then it runs out of battery. I don't send it much more than 500m away from me. You can see it as it's so small...once it's about 100m away, it's out of sight. I have lost communication with it a few times when flying around cliffs. Fortunately it started its return home routine and I regained control, but best to avoid flying around corners! Yes, I have the RC N3 controller for all the long flights. Only the follow flights are done without a controller. I find the picture quality not as good as the GoPro, whereas the DJI mini 3 that my son has is equivalent to the GoPro. But it doesn't have the autonomous features.
@@MakingStuffGoingPlaces Thanks for the input, Jason. I am thinking of getting one each for my two grandsons. I'd love to get one for myself too but I'd be unable to fully utilise and play with it at the moment.
Also I’d love to get a drone. Any advice.
Really depends what you want to do with it. Mine is a DJI Neo. Very robust, can fly by itself and very small. DJI mini 3 has better picture quality and will handle higher wind, but is more fragile. I'm considering buying one of these as well 😂
@@MakingStuffGoingPlaces maybe a few videos on drone handling would be good. Your scenic views are spectacular. And the underwater component. How are you doing that. I scuba dived for 30 years until all my gear got stolen 😢
@Celt_Downunder there are a LOT of videos on RUclips about the Neo and other drones. Other have done far better reviews that I could 😁 Underwater is just my GoPro. It's good for about 5m depth. Scuba would be fun. Would be nice to try it one day.
@ thanks so much for the prompt responses and info. Enjoy your travels.
Hi Newt girl here too. Where do you stay at Catho Bay. The car parks don’t allow campers. It’s my favourite blue space.
Yeah, the carparks in town have no overnight stays. Search for the cemetery 😉
@ aha yes I know it. Newie girl. Not newt LOL
I’m so glad to see that weather shields are still available!! Where did you go? ❤❤❤
Hi Vikki. They're from a Ford dealer. I think most the bigger dealers will have a set in stock.
Great drone shots and I loved your video thank you !
Thanks Louisa 😁👍
Hi Jason, as a Central Coast boy for over 50 years I find it fascinating seeing the coast thru your eyes, I hope you go down to Bouddi National Park and do the coastal walk from/to Maitland Bay to/from Kilcare, and over to Warrah lookout near Patonga, cheers, Garry
Hmmmm...some good ideas there Garry.😁 I'll see how the weather goes.
Great video, the glyphs really are a mystery...
They are fascinating. Even if someone just did it for a laugh, it was a lot of work!
Somewhere along the path from the top of the cliffs to the bottom is a nudist beach. I’m surprised you didn’t catch them on your drone!🤣🤣🤣🤣
😂 maybe a bit too early.... probably for the best!
Great to see you back in my neck of the woods. I'm yet to ride the new and recently opened extended bike track between Canton Beach and The Entrance. I'm looking forward to doing it soon. I've regularly done the ride around Budgewoi Lake, but I'm yet to do a complete lap of Tuggerah Lakes. Only bits and pieces of it from various areas around it. I'll need to pull the finger out and do it.
That new section of track is worth riding just to marvel at the amount of work they put in to it 😂 Glenn mentioned in the comments the Tuggerah Lake is about 50km for him....going to take me a while before I'm ready to tackle that 😁
Hiya Jason, just reading through the comments, looks like u have a lot of followers which is nice as what u share is wonderful. Wondering how long you have been on the road?
Hi Pete. Yeah, it's nice to have people interested in my day to day. I also meet quick a few followers while out and about which surprises me. Been on the road for just over a year now.
Man you're funny at times.
😁👍 not many get my somewhat odd sense of humour.
Bummer ! I missed you in Budgewoi .
Ah really!😊 I didn't stick around for long anyway, so would have been really hard to catch.
Hi Jason. Thanks for another great video. Love travelling with you via your channel. 😊 Cheers Helen
Thanks Helen 😊 Appreciate your support as always 👍😁
Hi Jason, I hope you didn't mind me giving you a "physical thumbs up" as I walked past your van at Terrigal Headland this morning. The weather was absolutely wild with 50 km winds. Thanks for the beautiful videos that you produce!
No problems at all, Glenn! Mate, you're keen out walking in that. Rough morning 😂
Hey jason what camera are you using is it a go pro mate cheers
Hi Chris, yes I have a GoPro hero 9. I also have a Lumix HC VX1 that I use for the zoom shots.
@@MakingStuffGoingPlacesnice mate
Thanks for showing my neck of the woods, I did a loop of tuggerah lake a few weeks back 51km garage door to garage door...I did notice all the droplets I though it was moisture from the trees as I started early moring. Thanks Urrhh..The new section bike path is very impressive with flyovers ect ..I have a mountain bike with my own 48volt electric conversion to make life a little easier...That same battery also runs my 48volt scooter and I have created a 48v to 12v stepdown box (turning the 20amp 48v to 80amp 12v) so the battery can act as an emergency back up to my caravan or I can run my car fridge on day trips...Cheers enjoy the area.
Sounds like a good battery set up. Nice to have everything interchangeable. I'd love to ride that loop, but 50km is but out of my current fitness level 😂
