I recall following that pink tag bush track and getting somewhat lost (I used to live in Kurrajong). Eventually after a little panic, we found the fire trail and encountered a couple of walkers there. They nearly jumped out of their skins, thinking we were the Bowen Mountain Yowie 🤣It reminds me that in the early 1980s, I could have purchased a block of land on Waratah Street for $3000, which was cheap even for those days. Once again, a fabulous video, brought back fun memories.

That's amazing, Julia. Can't believe someone watching this has been down there 😂 Could easily get lost in there without maps...very disorienting once you head down the valley.

Great video - loved the whole thing! It was certainly "exciting content" and Bowen Mountain looked like a fantastic place to grow up and even live for a while ..... or forever! I have a house in Emerald Victoria (although I live in a coastal resort area for work atm) and some of that area resembles some of the ferny creek areas on your walk and bike ride although I can't recall anything like those amazing rock formations shown in your video. Thanks for sharing this - NSW has some amazingly beautiful places and I am so glad you've shown some of these in your videos!

Thanks Allie. I lived in Vic for the last 25 years and yes, very different rocky landscapes in NSW. Emerald is a beautiful ferny place. Visited there a few times. I was around Geelong, which is just so dry.... totally different and not as nice.

That scenery looked incredible, especially the caves & all the lush green moss & ferns. Thank you for showing us. You made riding that hectic terrain look so easy. Enjoying your vids especially the central coast where I live. I sure could really feel the vibe of the ancient bush there in your vid. It really does feel different dosent it? A bit like you’re in a cathedral and you need to be shush…. I also felt just how good it was to see the road! Reminds me so much when I was in the Army ,navigating close country and canopy jungle and finally hitting that confirmation feature! Still working though all your vids, is there one where you talk about your life story and how you got into the van life? , cheers John.

Thanks John! Normally when I walk into the bush like that, there's waterfalls and it's very noisy, but this one was very different. Like you say, just made you feel you needed to be quiet. Very peaceful.

I was parked right where you parked, next to the zebra stripe sign, at the Crago observatory entrance near the gate last Saturday - wonderful parking spot (NOT). Fantastic scenery, that huge rock 'cave', the moss, awesome. Great footage. You can see how people can get lost in the bush. Seems lots of places they are stopping/making it dificult to park to use tracks.....cost cutting? 😅 Lovely area, not heard of Bowen Mtn before, thanks. I had my Transit serviced Monday. You do not want to know the price of new brakes and rotors....gulp! Haha.

I got quoted $900 for front brakes on my last Transit. Ended up buying aftermarket parts off eBay and doing it my self. Still cost about 350 for discs and pads....just lucky I can do that stuff myself!
Just cost me $485 for a service....another thing I can easily do myself but since it's under warranty, I need to play the game for now....

I helped build the Crago Observatory at Mount Bowen in 1982/83. It was built, owned and operated by the Astronomical Society of NSW and in use until 2022. The peppercorn lease agreement with the government ended in 2022/2023. The entire area including the observatory has been taken over by aboriginal ownership resulting in the observatory now being off limits and abandoned.

Typically anywhere I ride is popular enough that someone else will come along eventually. I past several groups of walkers on that ride. I just don't usually show other people in my videos if I can avoid it.
Yes, went to Colo high, but only for year 7 and maybe the first term of year 8. Do you recognise me? I'm sure I haven't changed a bit 😂

My background is in amateur astronomy which started at Mount Bowen well prior the construction of the Crago Observatory. My interest in astronomy and engineering led to involvement in professional areas designing and manufacturing control systems for telescopes. Amateur and especially professional astronomy is rapidly growing. The Crago Observatory has recently been abandoned due to aboriginal takeover of the land the observatory sits on, and adjoining locality resulting in the Astronomical Society of NSW being forced off the land. (see my post above).
