Introducing Muñequita
Muñequita is a term of endearment which translates to “little doll.” I had a different name for her after the second time she failed on me at Watkins Glen! However, I didn’t want to dwell on the rocky start to our relationship because the car is really a sweet drive! So, I tried thinking of another name but the old one just kept running through my head.
The name came to me (yes, it’s from the Santana song Smooth) recalling a conversation I was having with a friend the week prior, at that second Watkins Glen event where Muñequita had the big blow up. We were talking about some situation, and I mentioned how she was so “smooth” and the song came to mind. Whenever I think of the song, I hear...

Started 37 of 44 due to "issues." Some good racing in the video and I was happy with it in comparison to the nightmare that was HST at VIR in April. There's no video of that because it just wasn't worth posting! Enjoy...and race 2 will be posted soon. Also, up coming is the Lime Rock regional next weekend some hopefully there will be more videos to come!

So this was my first drive in my 23B which has been wonderfully prepared for me by GMT Racing. It took a long time to get to this point but J.R. invited me to this VSCCA test day (very gentlemanly point byes etc.) at NY Safety Track, which a buddy and I dubbed NY Action Park Track...and if you know of Action Park, then you know what we're talking about. This race is everything you'd expect from HackRacing’s first time at the Runoffs. Hurricane Ian threw everyone a curveball for the race after qualifying in perfect conditions. We expected a rain race but conditions Saturday morning were improving and there was clearly a dry line. There was no choice but to start on the SM7.5 slic tires and be careful off line. Remember, this is HackRacing so of...

If you liked this video, watch the race! It was of the charts. ruclips.net/video/uA-C3sH2TTY/видео.html Went faster in Q1 when I had a whiff of a draft and no one behind pushing me. In this session I had more going on behind me which was a bit of a distraction. Being the one punching the hole was not the plan. Turns 3, 4 and 10 were tougher for me today.

I have a good experience at Watkins Glen, but not in a Miata. These cars are ultra sensitive to anything that slows them down. So, basically you don't want to slow them down! They simply don't have the power to make up ANY over-slowing of the car. In other words, they magnify just how slow a driver you really are. Thankfully, I have one of the top SM drivers, Elivan Goulart, as my coach and we ...

      I appreciate you reaching out, Dr. Dom! You could've found me in SOC. I was stuck there for an hour after the race. They were questioning me on the incident that took me out in T1 at 26:20 in the video and held us until the reports were filed...they had a lot of work after our race. I had a lot of damage to my door. Like you, I wanted to keep as clean as possible, but other drivers had other ideas. I'm glad you posted your video. I didn't think you were that kind of driver, as we've met and raced before. Looking at both our videos, I agree that the car ahead of me checked up too aggressively causing a chain reaction. I was down to only 46mph at our first contact! Had both of us done somethings just a little differently, I think you could've stayed off of me initially. We only would've needed a matter of inches. However, with how hard Charlie hit you, you would've hit me anyway. He's a problem. We only had one yellow flag, but after seeing so many damaged cars and speaking with a bunch of other drivers, I don't think this kind of driving is what the SCCA had in mind with their Green2Checker initiative.

      @@lotushack111 Good to hear from you. I still need to watch all of my own video, let alone all of yours. I was surprised by the (slow) speed in that corner, and didn't really understand until I saw the video. The 0 car missed the turn-in, and then checked up. I tried to brake enough to get out of it, but couldn't slow down enough. You would've saved the car and driven away if not for the 2nd and 3rd contact. My (brand new) bumper/headlight/support are also damaged. I did receive an apology a couple of hours later (before I looked at video), but your assessment is correct. It is a widely held opinion in the paddock.

      Yeah, I'd love to do a full breakdown of videos and catalog all the "green2checkers" moments in the race. There were some seriously torn up cars. I'm going to do a short "highlight" video of mine. BTW, if you watch the very last seconds of the SCCA live feed, you'll see me sliding through the grass. No commentary, it just looks like I pulled some Bozo move! That's how HackRacing rolls. I'm sure I'll see you at The Glen where we can pick this up over a few beers. Looking forward to seeing you video.

      @@lotushack111 I had no highlights from that race. I was just not prepared mentally to throw my new car into the Spec Miata Storm. I'll get over that next race. I did see your car on the SCCA broadcast. 😬 Just watching this again, I see that the 0 car and you were going through 14 in two different "lanes". I was following him, and cueing off of him...assuming you were going to be to his outside (for 14a). He carries speed to get ahead of you, but needs to overbrake to make 15. This also leaves the inside line/apex open to you, but I was anticipating him to be there, prevent you from being there. That's my interpretation of my 4 seconds of reflexive actions, 5 days later. Then the 89 showed up. See ya next year!

It's actually, natural. As you saw, Turn 9 is a very different story! LOL!!! Elivan started DFL because his transmission broke before he could get a qualifying lap in. It was a blast watching him pick through the field. I sure did want to follow him through the field, but there's no way I'm anywhere near his pace. My fast lap was 2:19.3 and he did a 2:15.9 to secure poll for the second race...which he won!

    Hi David, Thanks for sharing this race too. Mark Clark #5 red/white club Ford commenting again. Sorry to see your car went into the tire wall in the esses. A fairly heavily dented silver Miata dropped fluid just after the left-hander causing a few cars to get loose creating a bit of a daisy chain of slowing cars. Regarding your thought about fastest lap times vs. finishing position, I’m not sure it would have helped much as there were open wheel cars and Miatas with similar lap times after race one. Perhaps a staggered start would have been the right approach for our combined group?

    • @lotushack111
      @lotushack111 3 года назад

      Hi again, Mark! Thanx for the insight as to why I may have spun. I wish I had my forward facing video with my data but that didn't record. I had been following an open wheel car and we were both trying to get by an MGB. I recall the open wheel car backing out of the attempted pass and I thought I had lifted slightly causing the spin. However, listening to the video you can hear I'm on power as the rear comes around so there's a lot of merit to the idea that it was fluid on the track which caused me to go around...and there may have also been a slight lift which shifted weight off the rear. We all know how good a racer's memory is about an incident! LOL!! I'm just glad I missed that Armco!!! If the second race was gridded on lap times, I would've been 5 places further up than I started. That certainly would've helped. Also, a smart racer, knowing he couldn't advance position much would've hung back for clear track and put in some burner laps, rather than try to fight a dangerous battle between open wheels and fenders. However, I also like your idea of a staggered start. This is the first time I've raced with SVRA and don't know how they've handled this in the past.

  • @markclark9916
    @markclark9916 3 года назад

    Hi David, Thanks for sharing your race footage. This is Mark Clark (red/white #5 Crossle Club Ford in your footage). I agree that mixing miatas with Formula Fords isn’t ideal. We open wheel guys wonder if fendered cars can see us as we approach to pass, especially if they are tussling for position with each other. In this race, we were all dealing with a drying track and several of the cars decided not to qualify on Saturday due to the heavy rain so, there were fast drivers/cars in the back of the pack and improving lap times as conditions improved. With such different cars on the track and other factors, everyone had to be extra cautious. Thanks for your part in making it a safe race.

    • @lotushack111
      @lotushack111 3 года назад

      Hi Mark, thanks for commenting! I was wondering if I'd be able to see you too. I angled my right side mirror down to help with that. It was very difficult to judge the distance of an open wheel car in front of the Miata because as I got closer the back of the open wheel car would disappear! I can't believe I didn't hit that Lotus on the last lap. It must've been very close!!! Some Miata drivers tend to move around a lot and toss their cars. I was afraid some were going to hip-check some of the open wheel cars after bouncing off curbs. I'll respond to your comment in the other video as I think there are things the organizers could've done to make this a safer situation.

      Thanx Peter! Yeah, I knew hitting the end of the pit wall was NOT an option. I just hung with it and looked down track at the start/finish line. It's a good thing cars haven't torn up the grass at that part of the track like at other spots. I hit 4 pavement/grass transitions any of which could've tossed the car and me into the end of pit wall. It really didn't phase me at all until I watched the video and realized how lucky I was!

    New pavement is great, eh?

    • @lotushack111
      @lotushack111 8 лет назад

      Yes, it seems like there is grip everywhere! The rough pavement at the top of the Esses was just aweful by June of last year. But all is not perfect. If you watch going into turn 1 you'll see a big patch to the left as you dive for the apex. When I would catch the corner of the patch, the car would noticeably skip to the left and cost time. You can see this happen on the video where I lose it in the Carousel (another HackRacing story in itself). Just a slightly earlier turn in avoids the patch and thankfully you can still pound the rumbles in Turn 1. The Bus Stop rumbles however are a different story. If I hit them like I did last year (all 4 tires over the rumbles), the car is thrown too aggressively to the left and moves me off line for the middle part of the Bus Stop. The other area which took a little getting used to was the transition in the Esses. I found I needed to turn just a little later, just a little ways up the white line on the right to avoid a bump which upset the car in the transition. That's definitely not a good place to feel the car skip to the right! All in all, it's a wonderful transformation of an amazing race track!
