  • Race 1 is here • 2022 VIR Hoosier Super...
I knew this was going to be a humbling weekend. The top SM drivers descended on VIR, site of the 2022 runoffs, and I'd never been there before. In typical HackRacing form, I picked up Moose from the bodyshop and promptly left for VIR the next day. If there's something that doesn't bode well, it's fresh body work with new Lotus Team Gold Leaf homage livery and the Hoosier Super Tour SM class!
Thanks to three days of D.E., including Elivan Goulart's SCDA (scda1.com/) and some great coaching by Coby Shield (@cobyshield) and Jonathan Goring (jonathangoring...), I was able to find my way around fairly well by race time. As always, I had a blast spending the entire week at the track hanging with the Krugspeed team of drivers and mechanics. ( / krugspeed ) Alex and company prepare Moose beautifully and make sure I'm ready to go. Alex also made all the arrangements for food and lodging as well as making sure my driving needs were met. My HackRacking buddy BillBilly helped me tremendously by shouldering everything that would have distracted me from driving and thinking about driving.
An added twist was having a full motion SparkVR simulator (drivesvr.com/) set up in the Krugspeed shop. I was able to debrief with my coaches and then immediately try out the suggestions on the simulator, building site line and muscle memory. By my next track session I was able to put the coaching to real world use. The morning of the races, I was able to warm up and sharpen up on the simulator so I could hit the track hot! The proof of all this preparation was that I improved my lap time in every session and race to finish with a 2:18.6 second lap.
In this race I started 51st, got as high as 36th but finished 47th with my "Hero to Zero" move when I went wide into T3 and my right front tire hit the curbing square on. Unfortunately, my finishes don't represent all the progress as making the same mistake in both races caused me to spin and lose ten spots. But is there really a difference between finishing 40th or 50th? Not for me, I had a blast at the Super Tour races and Moose returned relatively unscathed except for the obligatory bump drafting damage.
