Why Old-School Game Design is Timeless - Metroid Prime Commentary
Rush Hour | Metroid Prime Commentary
What is this video about? I'm not really sure. I played through Metroid Prime for the umpteenth time and wanted to talk about the various parts of game design I like and dislike.
This isn't a review or anything like that. It's more of a reflection on the Metroid series, and expectations for the future of both Metroid and video games in general. Metroid Prime wasn't something I played once and fell in love with; my appreciation grew over time, and that's a feeling that I don't really experience too often.
BEHIND THE SCENES:

When a Visual Novel has Better Combat than Most Action Games
Просмотров 33121 день назад
Rush Hour | Baldr Sky This is Baldr Sky: a quirky little (adult) visual novel that's 90% talking, 10% ass-kicking action. But the game is 120 hours long, so it still has like 12 hours worth of combat. Why this isn't brought up in conversations when people talk about action games is beyond me; this game kicks ass. Know what the funny thing is? The story is pretty good too, and I usually hate vis...

And sure enough, when I played Bioshock when it was new, I hadn't played System Shock, Deus...

The Problem with Fanservice Games - Samurai Maiden Review
You played blue destination instant like 👍
this is one of the few games you really need to read the manual.
I'm waiting the day when AI could create a game from zero, i will create a ff8 remake with ff7 remake combat system, more focused on summons GF and aerial combo, magic will spend mp and you could only draw when enemies are stunned just to unlock the magic, after that you only accumulate the magic to increase junction stat, 1 or max 2 magic draw from enemies per battle.
First time player here from Brazil. Bought the game and i'm amazed by it, Playing it on my ps5. Can anyone give me links or tell me which websites to look through mechanics, walkthroughs and stuff like that?
Soft reset was a feature included in almost all Squaresoft games at the time XD
I have the game on steam. Can still play it.
This game was an experiment from Square at the time of it's release. Square (and alot of JP companies) were having a really hard time coping with HD game development. Square spent years developing the Crystal tools engine only for it turn out disastrous eventually leading to the collapse of FFXIV. Since all of the engineers in the company were working to solve issues with Crystal tools some of the Devs at Square decided to give Unreal a shot. And that's what eventually lead to this game. This entire game was a training exercise by Square devs to see what they could manage in unreal.
I litterally just came from your review of The Last Remnant...THE CALL IS COMING FROM INSIDE THE HOUSE!
The Last Remnant started development as SaGa Frontier 3 so it's not too crazy to compare it to it.
Isn't this game a proof of concept to square about how to use unreal engine? Funny enough, basically without this game, the development for FF7R and FF16 might have been more wackadoo (technically speaking). Who knows... I mean, unreal 3 isnt unreal 4 or 5 and I don't know how much dev information you can give your team before the age of unreal blueprints regarding how to use unreal engine, but that's where we're at ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
lol i played this game and i can’t agree more. The way you retrieve information about a jrpg like this one is buying the official guide published by SE itself. They are usually dictionary thick and darn expensive. The worst of all is lots of them are in Japanese only.
"Silence! All was stripped from me! Only hatred for the brother that fled our homeland remains mine! Tell me: why do you forsake that which you must hold most precious?" Best quote in the game
18:30 and you switched to the Windurst music from FFXI because...?
Disaster? Are you joking? Hugely sucessful financially, a massive critical sucess, and personally one of my top 5 video games of all times. I'm not even going to watch the video.

Finally someone said it. I agree with everything, except maybe the slow start issue. I believe it has its place in games, for example I really liked how Doom 3 gradually escalated, but than again, that slow start is like 40 minutes, not 40 hrs. And yeah, even the best RPGs like The Witcher III need to have a lot of filler content to reach those high hour marks, hell I remember the endless swimming in the isles for loot, it's almost a PTSD. Also I don't know who has the time, the will and the patience to replay a 100 hour game, especially right after beating it. I just finished Drova, the new Gothic like RPG, it took me 50ish hours to beat, I basically did everything there is, but there's really zero interest for replay. And I can just imagine how some mediocre JRPGs with a length of 100+ hours must feel like to drudge through, I remember that even FFXII, which most consider to be one of the best in the genre, was a slog to get through by the end. (And that's with the speed up function on PC) I do however believe there's place for long games that reach the hundreds and above, but it should be carefully thought out. And I mean really, really carefully. And even then there's gonna be filler. I just think that the MMORPGfication of single player RPGs needs to be stopped at any price. Regarding the hour per dollar method, it seems like something thought up by an AI or an alien, completely inhuman way to look at games. That being said, if a person is really dedicated to such an outlook, I recommend watching "Out 1: Noli Me Tangere", it's nearly 13 hours of length and thus completely worth your 12 dollars. Tho it's from 1971 and unlikely to be played in any modern theaters. Still, if someone wants to open a fair priced movie theater, it's a start. I'm sure that a 13 hr long French arthouse film will be very popular in modern America/Canada.
The biggest lore of any FF8 game
That’s my favorite final fantasy game. I used to play the Pizza Hut demo disc. They had that beat on my Nintendo switch.
I also got for the cell phone. I’m using.
Very cool vid! ^^
It’s 7.99 right now on PlayStation… that’s the only reason I’m watching this video lmao
This is probably the best critique of Bioshock I've watched. I've been sitting here for ages wondering why so many people hold this game up higher than the uncountable amount of game's better than than it. When you get into critiquing the mechanics and story your video is at its best. The only query I'd have with this video is perching your criticism on top of the art/product can of worms. Not just because I'd possibly disagree with it (have to think about it more) but because i think a lot of people, as seen in the comments, can easily try and pull the rug out from underneath the more tangible arguments. In other words your criticism was strong enough referencing the core of the game. The more art theory stuff at the beginning and end softens things a bit too much. It feels like a whole other topic on its own and i think the risk is that people might not hear the solid criticisms in the middle of the video because they're too held up on the art/product thing. That's not to say you shouldn't write about that topic, or even evoke Bioshock when doing so, but perhaps syphoning that subject off into its own thing would've made this video even better. Just my two cents. And again, I like this video and your points 🤝
I agree. I'm personally still looking forward to it (not super mega hyped, but optimistic). Not because I need it to be or expect it to be the next Prime or Super, but just because I'm curious to play a new 1st person Metroid game and see what that could be so many years since we left off. Metroid games with the Prime subtitle have for many years not been restricted to the Prime trilogy story (Prime Hunters, Federation Force). Even the "trilogy" was barely consistent with itself until Prime 3 decided to stitch them up together via its story. If you look at Echoes and Prime's stories without Prime 3's context, they have little in common. At this point it should be clear that the Prime subtitle = 1st person Metroid game. Now you could say this case is a bit different since this one is numbered. It's Prime 4, not Hunters or Federation Force which weren't numbered, but I'm still confident it'll have little to do with the trilogy's story which again, may I remind you all, only came together with Prime 3. Before that Prime & Echoes barely had any clearly defined story elements in common with eachother. 4 will surely have callbacks to the trilogy, but I'm not expecting anything major like bringing back Phazon or Dark Samus. I'm also confident RetroStudios and especially Nintendo have, after all this time, after all these Metroid games, and after all these other games and years in gaming, understood that while Metroid can "get by" with story and characters, it truly excels with a more minimalist approach, less is more. And while sure, story and cutscenes sell these days, the opposite can also sell and be acclaimed by both consumers and critics. Perfect example = FromSoftware's Souls series. Gaming has evolved, devolved, and tried so many things so many times in the time since Prime 3 that RetroStudios and Nintendo have PLENTY inspiration to choose from ON TOP of the OG Prime trilogy and Metroid 1-2-3, the latter being the ones Prime 1 had to inspire itself from on top of other games from that era such as Turok and even Ocarina of Time. I just hope Prime 4 turns out good and that's it's not too "assisted" and "in you face" like Prime 3, or linear like Fusion/Dread, please be more like Super, Prime, and Echoes 🙏 And again, FromSoftware has proven more than once that you can make games like that. Without endless cutscenes, assistance, dialogues, and still be successful.
Besides the junction system. Game was amazing.
I’m back. And that card playing game too.
The compilation, IN THEORY, isn't a bad idea. Games for side characters that didn't get much time to shine in the original, they could be fun. They don't need to contribute to the story of FFVII, they can be purely gameplay driven just to give us a little chance to play with those characters some more, or be character driven to flash them out in their own little bubble. Same goes for other media than games. That is all fine. But that is not what we actually got, we got management demanded slop that just exists to have FFVII on the name, have some iconic designs that can pass as the characters of the game at least superficially for marketing hype purposes, and Mr "Kingdom Hearts" Nomura nonsense verbal diarrhoea, sorry, "writing" slop instead.
I gave the game a chance. Twice. Never finished it. And I hate it. I've always twice at the same point. The game sends you to a dungeon with overtsized roach like insects. They have this belly slam attack that just oneshots everything and I have no idea why.
41:33 - A minor correction here, but exploration in Echoes is not halted if you run out of ammo for either Beam. Charging your beam and then releasing allows you to fire a single shot, even if your ammo count is at 0. This is in place specifically to prevent players from soft-locking themselves in situations where the only way out is through a Light/Dark Door or a portal that can only be energized by either beam type. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to check that Hollow Knight video.
Thanks for the correction! I play Prime 1 like three times a year, but I’m much less experienced with Prime 2. I really should replay it soon (and Prime 3) to refresh my memory for Prime 4.
@@RushHourWeekend shouldn't we wait for possible switch release ?
Bro, you forgot wataru ishibashi and takehide murayama...
23:00 - I dont buy that because they removed it also in the Wii Trilogy version. They wanted the Thermal visor to retain its utility. And besides, the Power beam still has the effect of lighting up surfaces in Remastered. It is just very subtle.
Just feels a bit disappointing, because I think using shots to light your way is a much more interesting mechanic than just turning on the thermal visor. It feels more fun. Plus the thermal visor still sees use for two boss fights and powering doors, so it’s not like it’s a useless tool that needed more functionality.
@@RushHourWeekend yeah, the trade offs were more detrimental than truely beneficial.
Its "okay" to get lost in Metroid Prime because it gives you all the tools you need to overcome this: the named rooms, the color-coded doors and rooms on the 3d map..even if you have a bad memory.
good one. old stuff has kinda more design constrains, which gives it character. new games have it all and less uniqueness. They have so much more funcionality then old gamy, but not in a good way, in a lazy way, like a cocktail with to may ingridients. Modern devs and managers are too lazy and spoiled.
"Metroid Prime Remastered is a bad game because I cannot see light from my arm cannon through a tunnel"
I have friends like this and it kills me
Very insightful review and analysis! I'm not very knowledgeable or interested in metroidvania, but this is the first vid that convinced me the benefits of having compromised combat design in certain types of games. Very interesting perspective to me, you earned my sub.
Cool video! I've always felt that Super Metroid and Prime 1 are like cousins. One 2D and one 3D. They both represent the peak of their respective formats. I hope Retro ends up remastering Prime 2 at some point. Although its pacing isn't as good as Prime 1, I mostly enjoyed that entry. Prime 3 is like Other M for me. I’ll leave it at that 😆. Are you planning on doing a video on Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night? I've been thinking alot about the two indie darlings of the Metroidvania genre: Hollow Knight and Bloodstained. Looking back, I've developed somewhat of a love-hate relationship for them. I've seen your video about Hollow Knight but I’m curious to know your thoughts on Bloodstained and how it compares to Hollow Knight and other Metroid/Castlevania games. Thx and continue the great content!
I don’t have any plans to make a Bloodstained video, but I like the game for the most part. The only things I don’t really care for are the crafting system and upgrading the crystal shard powers, because both entail a ton of grinding, but it’s easy enough to ignore them. I really like the boots moveset, and being able to backdash cancel is awesome, really nails that Castlevania feel for movement.
What a great video essay! You definitely deserve more views and subscribers. In any case, you have my sub. Looking forward to your future videos.
This reminded me so much of the ending of AVGN's Hong Kong 97 episode Truly, the bulwarks of the mind have fallen
Couldn’t agree with you more on Samus’s character. A massive part of what made the Metroid story compelling in the first place was the mystery. Who is Samus? What are her motivations? What is her connection to the Chozo? Who are the Chozo? What is their connection to the Metroids? Etcetera, etcetera… When you don’t have answers to these questions you are open to exploring all sorts of possible options. But for Sakamoto to come along and say no, this is who Samus is and where she came from and exactly what she’s thinking at every single second during your game, it completely destroys that mystery! Especially if it’s done in the most predictable, uninteresting, and unimaginative way that’s possible and filled with poorly executed anime cliches. But perhaps the most important thing to make clear is that we’re not talking about a choice between “more story” and “less story”, but two different approaches to storytelling. I recommend watching FatBrett’s two videos on Metroid Prime, as well as a video on the old 2D games by a channel called Metroidvania Review.
I’ll have to check those videos out, thanks for the suggestion! In some ways, I’m glad the Zelda series has yet to give Link a proper voice and characterization. Learning more about Link isn’t the point of that series. The devs and audience still understand that 40 years later. I don’t know why Metroid, a series as old as Zelda, misses the point.
It sucks when you play a game for 100 hours and you realize at the end that the writing actually sucks and the ending is disappointing.
Where i can listen to the hollow knight tesis? I feel like something is wrong with that game expexially after you get the shadow dash
m.ruclips.net/video/q9pUBrChAg0/видео.html I renamed the video not long after I originally released it.
Your other videos: "I want developers to make true art instead of products by not listening to me or anyone else but making what they want to make instead". This video: "No, not like that"
Haha, fair enough, but I’d be hard pressed to call Deadly Premonition art because it included shooting levels specifically to appeal to western audiences. These shooting galleries weren’t part of its initial design plan, and it shows. Big time.
1:45 Absolutely. I'm still devastated that Mobius Final Fantasy and RWBY Amity Arena were shut down, and Yu-Gi-Oh Duel Links is in my top ten best games ever. Just look at how MMOs like Club Penguin and Toon Town are being kept alive by fans past their expiry date to see how timed art can be important to people. Are plays which aren't being performed anymore not art?
Cherry picking much? Plenty of RPGs needed countless time during the PS1 era. See BOF3 or Suikoden 2.
I beat the PC version when it came out with zero guides and I missed an entire town until the end 14:56, youre simply not good and come of as petty in your review. Soft reset really? Have you never played a PS1 demo? Pressing the Shoulder buttons and Start+Select is getting you back in so many games since the 90s, should be common legacy knowledge by now. The Last Remnant is not luck based; it actually requires skill in decision making and looking at the aoe potential and quick time events instead of lazy grind or baby mechanics like in so many other RPGs.
(Thought I would ask this because It probably won't come up in a video) As someone who enjoys mainly gameplay, do you have any strong opinions on Racing and Rythem games?
Yeah, I love racing games. Played Mario Kart 64 and Gran Turismo 3 as a kid, and more recently I really enjoyed Forza Horizon 4. I spent like 20 hours just practicing drifting. I wanted to love Gran Turismo 7 but the entire time I played it I felt like I was massively ripped off 🤣 Rhythm games are cool but I’m pretty terrible at most of them. I was decent at Guitar Hero 1 when that was new, but that’s about it. The problem with rhythm games is that I don’t enjoy the music in most of them.
@RushHourWeekend Cool! I don't play most Notable Racing IPs anymore (Closest they come is GT4 and NFS Prostreet) I recommend Tokyo Xtreme Racer Zero on PS2, rubberband can be Underground 1 levels but its still good.
Don't they have a visual art book of the Prime Trilogy coming out this Summer.
I still see this game as a black mark, it’s a menu management game more than anything else and it just feels lifeless and boring. XIIU, XV and XVI offer me more fulfilling gameplay, worlds and characters. There is a reason XII is the game we forget exists.
Hey Rush Hour, have you seen the news about Ninja Gaiden 2: Black and Ninja gaiden 4?!!!!!
I did. I’m not really excited for either, but hopefully people enjoy them nonetheless.
@@RushHourWeekendI heard Ninja Gaiden Black got reduced enemy density.
I was watching someone play it, and it looks to have the spawns from Sigma with the dismemberment from vanilla (gore is still massively toned down). Some of the terrible Sigma bosses were removed. I think it’s definitely a step up from Sigma 2, but that’s not really something I’m interested in.
I have yet to play a Metroid game that doesn’t get boring halfway through
I think the best part of Metroid Fusion starts at around the halfway mark, i.e. the Yakuza gauntlet. You have a series of intense sections back-to-back, which are the power shutting down due to massive overgrowth in Sector 2, then the Yakuza boss, then a long and dangerous chase sequence with the SA-X, then the Nettori boss fight, and then the Nightmare boss fight. One of my favorite sequence of events in any Metroid game.
I disagree with your take on indie dev prices. Those devs deserve to get paid too and times aren’t what they used to be in terms of pricing anywhere
Yeah, I can’t imagine most people will agree with my take. But man, if Super Meat Boy didn’t release in 2010 and instead released today for $30, people would find that price to be reasonable. I picked it up at launch for $15. Inflation hasn’t doubled in 15 years.
@ maybe not for the dollar itself (that’s only 40%) but it certainly *feels* to me like a lot of the items I buy have doubled in price over the past 15 years - groceries and fast food for example. Either way great video. I like that you’re not afraid to share your opinions and stick to your guns even when people disagree with you
The point in this review where you mention the organic feeling of the environment in 3D games compared to 2D ones makes me remember my thoughts on series that already had successful 3D games, or have the potential to be great 3D games (Metroid, Ninja Gaiden, Mario, Sonic, etc.). I seriously think that the 3D games have way more importance for the series and its world than the 2D ones. They're inherently more complex in every way, this is easily observable by keeping in mind the time, money and talent that goes into building a great 3D game vs a great 2D one. Not that 2D games are bad or worse, mind you, but they're objectively less than the 3D iterations. Environment complexity, movement, physics, the world around you, the increase in possibilities to tell a story... That's why it's very lame when we see a series like Ninja Gaiden return after 13 years with a 2D game. All the possibilities go to hell. You already know what to expect of a side scroller and its ways to reach your senses.
I know, I was gutted to see that the next Ninja Gaiden is 2D. Same reason why I skipped Super Mario Wonder: I vastly prefer the 3D series.
@@RushHourWeekend I feel exactly this way about the Sonic series too, keeping in mind the forced "classic Sonic" trope. This ties in well with your last videos about authenticity, I think. Sonic was showing several problems in its games in the latter half of the 2000s, mostly due to lack of development time (some games released less than a year from the previous one) and bad developers, while it had the elements to be authentic and differentiate itself well from other platformers, so what Sega does? Tries to appeal to every annoying nitpick by fans, journalists and the nostalgia industry that had nothing to do with the real problem. Forces Marvel humour and a classic, multiverse Sonic. Sonic loses its authenticity that was building mostly in a organic way since the 90's to become full time uninspired slop. But the real problems (development time, resources and capacity) weren't addressed. After the "Meta era" from 2010's backfiring horribly, they tried to turn back with Frontiers only to make a game trying to appeal to everyone, a boring open world slop with botched storytelling and gameplay.
