The combat is meant to be slow, your turn speed is supposed to play into your decision-making during combat, and there's supposed to be a back and forth where you throw out your attacks, and then wait for another opportunity while dodging enemy attacks and trying to get into a good position. Why is having it be slow paced bad? It's just different. Same thing with the controls, it's strange if you're used to how modern games work but they're not really THAT hard to get used to. The trap at the start tells you to be careful and be wary of traps while exploring, and it happens so early dying from it isn't a big deal. It's not so different from the other early game traps fromsoft puts into the souls games with little warning.

@mr.dirtydannnnn You shouldn't deride a game just because it's not the type of game you're interesting in playing. Like, I wouldn't play StarCraft because I don't like super complex multiplayer games, but _if I did play it_ I wouldn't go around complaining that it was overly complex and should have been simplified. I would just respect that the devs had their own vision for the game and that vision just didn't align with my tastes.

Most games I played back in 2001 had zero voice acting. I feel like many things are a matter of taste. But to criticise a 2001 game for not having voice acting is dumb. You wouldn't criticise a NES game for being 2D.
Also, seeing footage from a game and then thinking it looks awful. Then proceeding to playing it and not liking it shouldn't come as a surprise.

Okay Somethings Wrong with this Video:
First of lets set a baseline this is a First Person Dungeon Crawler ARPG made in 2001 by Fromsoft
    - Point 1, the death in the beginning of the game, yes its a massive fuck you thats what it supposed to be an introduction to how the game is going to be. Plus how inconvenient can it really be its the beginning of the game starting over would take max 5 min it teaches you to be careful.
-Point 2, a game doesn't need voice acting, yes it adds to the atmosphere but literally look at the game, listen to the sound track it doesn't need voice acting from the very beginning you know this a bleak world the atmosphere is immaculate
-Point 3, there is no auto loot function cause this is a dungeon crawler, dungeon crawlers dont have auto loot systems also their is a weight system pick up to much loot and you'll become over encumbered just like modern dark souls, so if their was auto-loot then you could randomly become encumbered without ever knowing why
-Point 4, it think the item zooming in thing is just an attention span issue cause it takes max a second, plus its more realistic like ur picking it up i dont even know why you bothered to talk about this
-Point 5, yea some of the points of combat that you talked about is valid yes the game turns into a move back, wait, strike, repeat ad nauseam. However, the movement speed is perfect it perfectly ties into the atmosphere of the world. The game is very slow and deliberate, so having a slower speed is way better in addition the sprint taking up the power bar. Is to create a risk versus rewards decision do you want to sprint ahead but be unprepared when an enemy shows up. Or take it slowly and be prepared, sprinting is mostly there for back tracking or going through areas you already know. The depth thing is a skill issue it took me 10 min to adjust, my first time I beat the whole game with my fist and its completely viable. isnt it obvious bigger sword bigger length, shorter sword shorter length. Enemies jumping away, is to encourage using magic and also more complex ai the game is built of what the enemy can do not you. Yeah ill give you the turn speed thing. Clicking the sticks to turn 180* is dumb, but yeah like I said turning is big issue but honestly you get used to it 20 min in.
-Point 6, you cant jump back on to the elevator thing cause its not an elevator your in a mine or smth, that thing is used to safely bring people down and it uses pulleys to do so it requires another person to bring someone up thats why you cant ride it
-Point 7, its a fromsoft game the status effects have always been like they always last an eternity pick up some antidotes, plus their are a lot of items that cure status effects
-Point 8, Plus your not supposed to walk through the webs, your supposed to burn them with fire, the game teaches you this by having the entrence to the place be covered with webs and you have to BURN them of to open the door
-Point 9, Thats because many of the key items are reusable you can pick some of them back up and use in other areas, thats why key items are made like that
-Point 10, You should have predicted it because thats the lesson the game teaches you from the beginning, this is an unfair game you have to be careful and prepare you hear something its an enemy I should be careful take a look and strafe out of the way immediately.
-Point 11, This game is really unfair and punishing If you dont realize that its purposely punishing and unfair thats why the slow speed tank controls You gotta embrace the difficulty and work with it not against it.
-Point 12, in that are your at their is another save point also there are hidden wall in this game also yes there are maps in this game I forgot if its near the section your in or in the actual ancient tower.
-Point 13, Okay yeah that side quest can be done even far before you enter the main dungeon so yeah you could have had a map with the section, but yeah the map is dogshit its realistic but fair the second map you get is immaculate tho.
    -Point 14, *SWORD MAGIC*
-Point 15, *BETTER MAGIC* there are so many magic spells that you can find that could aoe enemies try a variety of them
    -Point 16, *RANGED WEAPONS*
-Point 17, The fast travel system isn't tedious, it forces you to make a decision, by actively removing a save point your making the decisions to move it somewhere else thats it, its just another layer of thinking and planning, btw they give you like 4 stones you have 4 free fast travel spots but yeah it would have been easier to just be able to teleport to all the waypoints.
-Point 18, uh I think I found your main issue with combat this game has weapon levels, so if you stick with a weapon and use it alot it will upgrade get faster, stronger, and sometimes give you access to magics instead of just swapping out weapons every time a weapon has a higher number.
    -Point 19, *MAGIC*
-Point 20, Yes, yes it was to cold to melt the ice in that area
-Point 21, Yea the bosses aint that great
-Point 22, You can upgrade multiple gears at the same time, your whole inventory if you want
-Point 23, Your making a review, dont make a review if you dont want to give a chance and adapt, the game is not for everyone thats obvious

I like the King's Field series mainly for the exploration and atmosphere, and yes those things can carry a game. I also don't think the combat is as bad as this video claims, though it is worse in KF4 due to how much slower it is than the rest of the games in the series. Recommending something like System Shock over it is silly, System Shock being an in-depth dungeon crawler with involved character building, whereas King's Field is a more focused adventure with lighter RPG elements. Zelda is also a terrible comparison because unlike Zelda, King's Field levels are interconnected and not singular dungeons connected to a hub, so exploration flows more naturally. It is also not even vaguely an RPG. King's Field simply caters to my tastes and I usually have a good reason to prefer it over other similar games, including the "superior" Souls games.

I feel like most negative comments come from people who think that "Fromsoft" cannot do bad games. Ofc... We are talking about company that took how many, 8 (?) games to realize that PS2 has TWO analog sticks and using right analog for camera control is a good idea? (Yeah, I am shittalking about Armored Core. No, AC controls were absolute shit until Last Raven and even then it wasn't good!)
I played obscure Fromsoft titles like A.C.E. and most of them sucked badly
Comments like "Filtered" miss main point - these games were not "old but gold". You want old but gold? Go play Blade of Darkness - that game is hard but fun.
Most of the Fromsoft games were janky, unpolished, lacking good direction. Some, like Armored Core, weren't that bad, but most weren't that good.
Hell, Demon's Souls was considered a lost cause - if Miyazaki didn't take it into different direction, it would, most likely, just end up in a dust bin along with other games of the same caliber and noone would have remembered it.
King's Field 4 isn't even that good - in 2002 it had median review around 6/10. Compare that to any actually good game from that time, like Warcraft 3, Metroid Prime, TimeSplitters 2, Spliner Cell, Star Wars Jedi Knight 2, GTA Vice City, Neverwinter Nights, Morrowind, Battlefield 1942, Metal Gear Solid 2, Suikoden 3, Kingdom Hearts, Dungeon Siege, Hitman 2 should I continue even? List of actually good games that are 1000 miles better than King's Field 4 is long and it is nowhere near the top.
Reality is that most of Fromsoft library in 1990s-2000s were just cheap shovelware titles that got cult status because of Fromsoft current reputation, not the other way around. In Mid-2000s I knew them as creators of anime-licensed action games, not as creators of something big and great - no matter how people try to make them look cool, Fromsoft weren't cool back then.

Altough, it's still interesting to look back and see that From already "got it" with all the world design and the atmosphere they managed to create with these games.

Thing is, console gamers don't even realise that these pc/amiga/etc games were more popular than the obscure and frankly shovelware King's Field games, because they love to rewrite history and even write in wikipedia that the first entry was "revolutionary" lol. I'm primarily a pc gamer and enjoy dungeon crawlers, KF games are great dungeon crawlers. A mere step above shovelware, absolutely. But truly great regardless. Quality isn't on such a stupidly linear axis. Appreciation for KF beyond having grown up with it is an excellent gauge for proper media enjoyers, if you ask me. It's the same folk that can watch a murderdrone film and go "yeah, I'm glad this exists." or give time to small scale avant jazz gig. Everyone else seems to view the world of art as some quest for polish in a great big hiearchy which is just kind of a flaccid perspective deprived of aesthetic. What you're meant to be looking for is resonance and resonance is as deep and varied as you're capable of letting it be.

I appreciate King’s Field to the extent that it walked so Demon’s Souls could run, but judging it as a game meant to be played for the purpose of enjoyment, it’s agonizing. I can only imagine how miserable the first three games are if KF4 is the most popular one of the lot.
I saw a walkthrough of the most popular King’s Field 3 video on youtube. The description said that the player used a hack to raise the frame rate above 15 fps because it felt unplayable otherwise. That really says all that needs to be said.
So if people want to praise the series for serving as the springboard for something much better, I can understand that, but sitting down and taking the time to finish one of these games is anything but a good time.
