      There's a difference between learning about the world through the environment, and starting your game off with 20 minutes worth of walking around and talking with space marines. I have nothing against the lore of this universe, but the first game did it best by keeping most of it out of the way. The lore is there if you want it, usually for your first playthrough, but when you're replaying the game you can ignore all of it to keep the exploration and combat flowing smooth. I feel like a lot of people that love cutscenes in games don't enjoy replaying those same games very much, because once you've replayed Metroid Prime ten times, the last thing you want to do is watch unskippable cutscenes.

      You can only skip cutscenes on a second playthrough, or if you've already seen a cutscene before (if you died). For a first time playthrough of Prime 3, you've got a protracted series of unskippable character interactions. You can skip most of it on a replay and get to the action in around 5 minutes, so we can judge the game based on the first-time experience, and how it feels to replay, and Prime 3 certainly flows better on a repeat playthrough.

    I really don't see why the Prime series can't start a new trilogy with a new story. I hardly doubt 4 is going to be more about phazon and introducing something new. I can agree that less is more in terms of cinematics and cut scenes, but it's just one way to build a world and tell a story. The essence of Metroid has always been subtle, environmental storytelling either through the visuals and details or through the scan visor, as in the Prime series. I LOVED scanning absolutely everything and learning more about the lore of the series and it's a beloved aspect of it. I think that adding MORE lore and world building into the Metroid Prime series is great, just not through cut scenes.

  • @awildwildwes
    @awildwildwes 2 месяца назад +11

    I think is fine to be cautiously optimistic. Any game that hasn't come out has the potential to suck. Is fine.
    But this feels misguided. You complain about story yet you use as an argument for NOT having a fourth Prime game. Have you considered that perhaps the reason a 4th Prime game is being made is because people want to PLAY a new Prime game. Like you said, any story is just an EXCUSE to have that. Having a story and presentation is just expected nowaday, let's not lie to ourselves. But you don't have to assume is gonna be intrusive, that's just you being pessimistic. Prime 3 is a flawed game in some aspects, but it was made because the series had a certain momentum and felt it needed to deliver on that momentum. It chose spectacle. Which is fine, the series is no strager to that. But brother in christ, have you not noticed it's been 17 years? Don't you think that gives devs SOME foresight? Story isn't a bad thing. You CAN have both.
    Also,
    Implying this is a cash grab is INCREDIBLY naive, cus this not Mario, this is not Zelda. This is Metroid. It CAN sell well, but it usually sells FINE. Nintendo could've ignored it and never made another Prime game, but the fact they not only announced it, but doubled down, through 2 different development cycles, spanning 7 years, SHOULD show they believe in it's potential. Ensuring it has a bigger audience just ensure Metroid lives on. Don't understand how that's a problem.

    • @Misty25939
      @Misty25939 2 месяца назад +1

      I don't think that's entirely true. Mario and Donkey Kong still get by fine with very little narrative. Metroid was made around that time too and has done well without a story too. Prime 1 remaster and Dread had very little narrative too and they're still great games. I don't know why Metroid Prime 4 needs one now but because it's continuing the arc from Prime 3, it pretty much has to.
      I don't hate it, but it does feel unnecessary. Like, the game would be just fine if the story takes a backseat after the intro and you go about collecting upgrades and exploring. That's all Metroid really needs. It's the Metroid game design that should be the highlight, not the story itself. The same design that inspired the Metroidvania subgenre.

    • @awildwildwes
      @awildwildwes 2 месяца назад +3

      @@Misty25939 ok, first of all, Mario and DK are platformers. You can't compare that to SciFi fps search action game. Prime remaster is a not a new game, is the very first Prime, so yeah, naturaly the story would be set back significantly. But, like you just said, at this point, for a game like this, in this day and age, *it is expected.*
      And like, fine! It's not NECESSARY, you're right, it's Metroid after all, it does fine through subtext alone. But It'd be weird to just DROP everything at this point. I for one appreciate the plot, and a lot of other people do too. NO ONE is pushing for Other M-esque unskipable cutscenes, but I truly believe people need to stop pretendending that having control taken away from you for a FEW SECONDS (which might I add, happens in Prime 1 too) or merely HAVING DIALOG in it is an immediate detriment. You can still have your immersive experience in a isolated planet WHILE having an active plot where things actually happen in it. Shouldn't be a deal breaker.
      The plot exist. Even if some people don't care for it, a lot of people do. And having something engaging might broaden the audience, which IS GREAT! That means more Metroid stuff, a series often neglected.
      From what I see, it still is going to be an isolating, ambient experience with some plot and spectacle sprinkled through. I'd say it's promising

    • @Misty25939
      @Misty25939 2 месяца назад +1

      Metroid IS a platformer. lol
      The only fps-ish thing about it is the perspective in the Prime games. It's basically like Zelda in design. You collect upgrades, energy tanks for more health and missile expansions to get stronger. That's the main premise of every Metroid game.
      Like I said, I don't hate the narrative mixed in, but Metroid doesn't need it any more than Mario and Donkey Kong. It's a useless feature, and I'm not saying that it's a deal breaker. We just don't need it.

    • @Miriam_J_
      @Miriam_J_ 2 месяца назад +2

      @@Misty25939 Nearly nothing is "needed" though? I don't get this argument. We don't "need" good music, decent graphics, or good sound design, yet we would be angry if any of those were lacking, right? Because it's something players want, not need. The only thing a game "Needs" is to be fun and completable, everything else is flavor to make people want to pay for your game. You can remove a ton of things that make games amazing if we think about things purely of what is "needed". That is definitely not the type of thinking an artist should have, it's the way executives think. They wouldn't be an artist if they thought that way. Or at the very least a very boring one that paints in monotone colors.

    Imo story does matter but it has to be achieved in a “show don’t tell” manner. Things have to unfold through gameplay and also I’m sure most of the lore is through scan logs like the old games which are optional to read.
    Also prime 4 exists because prime 3 had that cliff hanger with sylux. There was always supposed to be a game after prime 3. I don’t want them to reinvent the wheel, we havent had a prime game in 17 years I just want another one. They don’t have to do anything different. I expect the NEXT Metroid game to be different, I’m not sure if they’ll make a “Metroid prime 5.”
    As for linearity, did you see the end of the prime 4 trailer? It looks like an open world tallon 4ish environment. This game isn’t going to be linear. Prime 3 was linear because you went on multiple different planets. Prime 4 seems to be just 1 planet.
    At the end of the day, this game COULD suck. But I’m not seeing any signs of the game being bad. The trailer we got seems to be everything I wanted which is combat, exploration, good music, and story.

      The trailer did show that scanning for lore makes a return, which is a good sign. Keeping the world-building behind optional activities is the way to go. But as for Sylux, I thought Prime Hunters was an abysmal game; making him the new central antagonist further solidifies my point that I'd rather Retro make a brand new 3D Metroid rather than continue building off this universe by scrounging for scraps.

    It's a Nintendo game. Their games haven't fallen into the pitfalls of too many unnecessary cutscenes. Also, the reason they've remastered 1 and not the other ones was perhaps to not give the wrong impressions to newcomers about the direction Prime 4 was taking. Remastered to me is an acknowledgement from Nintendo that they know it's the better one and taking the development away from Bandai Namco and restarting it is a proof that they don't want to provide a mediocre product.
    Now I feel like it really needs to improve on its gameplay, especially the platforming. They've sacrificed Samus' speed and agility in Prime 1 because FPS gameplay hadn't matured on console yet and because of the controller inapt for it and on the Wii the controls were too wonky and slippery, but now it's time to bring it back.

  • @Tomsemann

    I really think it's too early to jump the gun and expect this game to be more on the cinematic and spectacle side of things, like Prime 3 (2007) was just because of this trailer. I expect the shown footage to be the literal start of the game, similar to how Prime 1 started on the Frigate and Super Metroid in the research lab. Those were "cinematic" intros so I don't see a problem here. The final shot of the trailer is more telling in my opinion. Developers are also aware and listening to past criticism, I don't expect Prime 4 to be as linear and hand-holdy in it's world progression. Games having a plot is not a bad thing and I myself am invested these stories. Having nice looking cutscenes also doesn't mean the game is going to be a movie, noone is expecting or wanting another Metroid Other M approach. Just look at Metroid Dread, those Devs understood the character of Samus and the feel of Metroid, bringing back so many staples of what the older 2D metroids were loved for. The gameplay is fantastic and the amazing looking cutscenes don't hurt it in any way, in my opinion.

    I don't terribly agree with everything here, but your perspective is more than understandable. Someone in my server pointed out that despite praying the game did not get canceled, the trailer left him disappointed because it was really just "here's Prime 4, it actually exists".
    It's showing Samus fighting space pirates which we've already seen. It's showing Sylux who we already know. It's playing a space pirate theme remix which we've already heard. Even the graphics which are gorgeous, we've already largely seen in Prime Remastered.
    They didn't show anything new. They didn't show a new gimmick or control method. There wasn't anything we didn't expect from a Prime game.
    I don't view Metroid Prime as "the story of Samus's battle against Phazon" but rather "this is the first person Metroid side series". So I'm not expecting a ton of callbacks or Dark Samus or a much in the way of retreaded story beats. I think they're moving on with the Sylux arc they've built up which, as you put, is it's own problem. But the trailer doesn't leave a lot of stellar expectation.

I recently got into Metroid, so maybe I shouldn't speak on this, but if they manage to blend gameplay and narrative together well, then I don't see an issue. Whether the story will be good or not is another matter entirely. I didn't know they hired a trans person who is already injecting their beliefs into the game by trying to make Samus trans which she isn't. But then again, I'm not surprised since these companies nowadays in the West have no spine and just hire people for "diversity" and not merit. It's not an opinion I'd disagree with. For a first time playthrough, Prime 2 is amazing. It's more difficult, Torvus Bog and Sanctuary are incredible levels, and the dark world was a really clever way to incorporate puzzle solving.
      But, in Prime 1, once you've beaten the game and know where the artifacts are, you can grab a large chunk of them as you're naturally playing the game. You don't need to save the hunt until the end, so the game rewards your knowledge on subsequent playthroughs. In Prime 2, not only do you need to wait until you're halfway through the game to start acquiring the sky temple keys because you need the dark visor, you need to wait until the literal end to acquire half the keys because you also need the light suit. By consolidating all this backtracking at the end of the game, exploration feels more restrictive than Prime 1. Other M and Fusion also suffer from this same issue of locking full exploration until the end of the game.

    your headcanon on the concept of headcanon is that if a writer has a pre-existing one you don't agree with, it will automatically effect a project negatively, which is a narrative that is sort of invalidating for a video predominately about narrative invalidations. Why couldn't you have just said, "I hope they don't make Samus trans"..., which they definitely won't, btw. otherwise, mostly true, imo.

      The footage of Prime 4 did look like it runs suspiciously well by Switch standards, but Retro remastered Prime 1 last year and it looks and runs fantastic. I think the model they created for Samus in Prime Remastered is being reused in Prime 4 with some minor alterations, like extra lines in the abdomen section and more lights on the legs, but it looks to be 95% identical. So I think the footage we saw is running on the Switch, it's just that people are used to seeing developers put in zero effort when optimizing Switch games.

    To name a few examples: the artifact hunt at the end of the first two games could have been replaced with something more fun and engaging to more reasonably justify havjng a chance to explore the world with the ultimate badass suit in both games.
    There are ways to upscale challenge that doesnt rely solely on rng like it does when up agains the boost gaurdian
    Enemy varitey and encounters could have been expanded and refined in such a way that it makes more sense contextually with the environment and so on

    They stated that dark samus will not be returning and phazon is gone. The prime title appears to relate to the timeline like how prime hunters and federation force are both prime games yet neither involve the prime Metroid or phazon.
    Personally I don’t mind a divide where 2d Metroid games prioritize gameplay where prime focuses on story. Prime 1 was an outlier because it was the 3d remake of super Metroid. Other M had the fault of having the worst writing on top of being a fusion remake but not really and then linear non expressive gameplay. The only creative boss being the lava fish. And music being poor with a tell don’t show approach.

    • @RushHourWeekend

      It's not so much the lore that bugs me, it's that the story is obtrusive. Prime 1 has basically no plot; learning about the fall of the Chozo and the discovery of Phazon is lore. You learn about it through scanning the environment in the same way you read item descriptions in Demon's Souls to learn about the world. This isn't the main storyline, it's backstory, which is a great way to incorporate storytelling in a Metroid game because it doesn't impede the flow of the action unless the player makes that decision.
      Incorporating cutscenes, so that the player no longer gets to make that decision, is where my opinions differ from most Prime fans.

In other words, Sylux was a hugely open plot thread. I'm actually beyond the fact of thinking that Metroid Prime is all a connecting series (I mean obviously there are many things that connect) What I'm really saying is that I think Prime is just how Nintendo categorizes FPS Metroids. And they're connecting the stories which is great and I am really hoping they officially connect those stories to the over-all timeline.

      To be honest, I don't care about Samus as a character. Nintendo never gave anyone a reason to care until Fusion and Other M, and look what happened. The appeal of Metroid has never been about learning more about Samus. Throughout the entirety of the Prime trilogy, Samus never once utters a single word. She's a stoic hero, much in the same vein as Doomguy, that's just looking for an excuse to run around and shoot up aliens. Developing her character would ruin that appeal. Just as someone might prefer Samus being this complex character with a rich backstory, I prefer her being this quiet badass that we don't know much about that dives head-first into danger.

    5:47 its called "immersion", like scanning.
    But you want a game without cinematics... a boss rush game mode? That's even possible for MP4. Or you like to play the story mode like the GBA zero mission, with no texts at all?
    You quoted Prime 1 as perfect, but people disliked to scan in MP and reading all stuff. If they want lore they search at internet, they dont do themselves while playing. Isnt it as same as wasting time with cinematics? instead of animation, you are reading a novel. Ironically, Metroid Prime series has lore to interact with it for many minutes if not hours.
    MP at this point isnt so perfect and fits the "waste of time" for cinematics. How much time you spend by reading everything? Specially when encontering a boss for the first time? You prefer doing stuff first, and try reading scan only if you fail the boss or miss their weakpoints or ways to deal to their weakpoints? But then, the scan was a boring stuff or a good innovation?
    People can figure out, but the universe, lore, can only be read or seen in cinematics.
    Also, even GBA had cinematics... "child Samus and randon birds I guess those are chozos."
    We can infer many things, but without it, we could enter the universe of luminoths? we could understand the fight between dimensions just by playing? we need scans (we lose time), and sometimes cinematics (we lose time again).
    I have no complains about cinematics, BUT those from metroid other M, in which you finish the boss with... one interaction that finishes with cinematic? that was really dumb, i know, but no final boss had such ridicule end. that was exception for Metroid-games standard

Expect the same for Prime 4, another masterpiece since Prime 1.
    And lastly, there’s plenty of opportunity & reason to continue the Prime series. The ending of Prime 3 hints at a craft following Samus. That craft belongs to the new villain shown in Prime 4. Also, Prime 4 provides the opportunity to connect timelines of previous Metroid games.

    So let me get this straight. You hate metroid games now because they added story, cut scenes and details of a character into its universe. When back in the day, it had a story, cut scenes and details of the character in the universe. But because it adds too much, it's now bad. And form the details you want in the games, just being shooting and killing, no story or lore, seems to me you just want a shooter game. Well go play COD if you want that. A war story that no one plays and only wants online play. Because what you want would make every game become boring and not worth playing. Zelda with no lore would just a hack and slash. Mario would be a jump and score game. Fire emblem would be a 3d chess game. So on and so forth. A story helps make the game better and bring new ideas to the players for future theroys and games. And for someone who didn't mind playing dread but hating the moments with the computer talking, you must of hated fusion talking to the computer in that game. You have the right to hate the games story's if you wish, but note that everyone else is enjoying learning new things from it. We are no longer living in the arcade era of games. We grown up and want to tell stories. True we don't need to tell stories to enjoy games, but it makes the players become engage with the characters. Remembering moments with sacrifice, cliff hangers, betrayal, or even sadness can make the game become one of best things about it. I can say for some, not all, but I like to know more of Samus and her universe even if it isn't the best. Hate the game if you like, but not everyone here is going to agree that story, cut scenes and characters lore makes it worse.

You say the stories are unnecessary but every game since super has a focus on Samus, her history and the galactic federation. If the gameplay doesn’t suffer due to the story then why complain and whine about it just because YOU don’t like it. Me and the vast majority of people love the story in these games so I see no reason why a player like me should be worried about prime 4.

    All and all such a strange take. I feel like im in the early 2000's with people arguing that the new metroid game must be following the trail of cod because its 3d and in first person.
    I wanted to go into detail about each point and share my thoughts, but I don't think its worth the effort. The issue here is that (and I can't believe i'm using legal terminology) there is no reasonable doubt here to justify these concerns.
    It is unreasonable to assume that the series is going to continue the rout they were on seeing as it has been 17 years since the last prime game. What rout is there to take other than a new one.
    It is unreasonable to assume that they are using metroid prime 2 and 3 as their main point of refrence, seeing as those were the ones that didn't sell well. MP1 was for the longest time the best selling metroid game, and Retro Studios just spent who knows how much time remastering it. So why use anything else as a starting point.
    It is unreasonable to assume that more story = less quality seeing as super metroid had more story than metroid 1, but very few would argue that metroid 1 is better than Super. And Metroid Prime has more story than Super, but a lot of us say we prefer Prime be it preference or something else.
    These "red flags" are outrageous speculations based on wafer thin assumptions. There was not a single word spoken in the MP4 trailer, what reason would anyone assume "They must be turning it into a movie like everything else."
    I am all for not letting our expectations go out of control, but this is cartoonish.

    Yikes. I went into this expecting a nuanced analysis of the trailer, the current state of Retro Studios and the Metroid series as a whole, because there are genuine issues that could be discussed… what I was not expecting was 11 minutes of petulant whining, largely over subjective issues that most fans don’t care about.
    While the later Prime games did put a greater emphasis on story, to say that “you don’t need a story” to just pluck Samus in a location and say “go”, is insane. Even the first Prime had a story. It wasn’t as involved as Prime 3, but you need something. Take a look at the FromSofware games. They have a limited story, but the story is still important, especially to fans. You need something. You need to have some kind of set up.
    Then there’s your hang up on the Prime name itself. Prime 4 is a new story, not connected to phazon (at least as far as we know). They’re only calling it Prime because it uses the same 1st Person style as the previous Prime games. Supposedly it’s using the same engine, albeit heavily modified. It would be weird to release a new 1st person Metroid game and call it something other than Prime. It’s just a name.
    But I shouldn’t get too worked up considering you can barely keep track of the Metroid story. You seem to think that they’re bringing back Dark Samus, which they aren’t. You seem confused about Adam being an AI, which was all explained in Fusion. For someone who claims to have played these games so much, you should not be having this much trouble.
    Of course everyone seems to be raking you over the coals for this. Unless this was an attempt at trolling, this might be one of the worst Metroid takes I’ve seen since Other M apologists. So I guess that’s something to be proud of.

      Actually, Prime was named that because of the new Metroid breed found in the end of Prime 1. THE Metroid Prime itself. Harvesting the Tallon IV Metroids were a big part of the story too. The Metroids are probably the most dangerous things Samus hunts. They evolve, adapt and mutate to enormous sizes.

      @@Misty25939 I am very familiar with what Metroid Prime, and the Metroids are. Not sure how it would be possible to NOT know that, considering the nature of my comment.
      However the series, “Metroid Prime” doesn’t necessary have to involve the creature Metroid Prime. The Hunters spin off didn’t. Federation Force didn’t. The series can and has evolved. Metroid Prime 4 doesn’t have to be about that creature either. So far there is no indication that it is about that creature or Dark Samus. Just as Metroid Dread moved beyond using the Metroids as antagonists, the Prime series may be doing the same. So far there is no evidence to justify the video’s complaint that they’re dragging on the story.

    • @Misty25939

      @EclipseStudio Actually, even Dread involved Metroids. Samus practically became an Omega Metroid monster herself in the end and that DNA saved her life in the last boss fight.
      Even if Metroids aren't the direct enemy, it's tradition to involve them as a secret villainous entity to the plot. So I'm pretty sure we'll see that come back in Prime 4, even if it's not the Prime species itself. The Metroid Prime started Samus' quest through the trilogy.

There’s no evidence to back up the claim that Metroid Prime/Dark Samus will be back in this game. Other games in this series used the Prime name without that creature being involved. I’m sure there will be a log entry or reference to the events of the first trilogy, but the idea that they have to keep doing the same thing over and over again because of a title is absurd.

    You're right. The series wrapped it up good with 3. I really hated the cliche Sylux final scene as I knew in 2007 that it meant a new, unnecessary sequel. And... man, a woman writer who fucks up and loves showing her beliefs making a main character gay or trans? It's shitty as fuck, but expected, as Retro Studios is American, after all. I'm so tired of gaming becoming mainstream. Today not even japanese companies are safe from this shit, as in a way or another they're gonna release games with western progressive shit.

      Even if there was something wrong with gay or trans characters, which there isn’t. Prime 4 doesn’t seem to be steering in that direction, it isn’t even implied.

      Except nintendo does have control over its franchises. They own the characters and I've never seen them put progressive things or conservative thing for that matter in their games. I don't see why it would suddendly change

      I certainly don't want another game plagued with the kind of storytelling Other M has, but the gameplay in Other M was entertaining enough, even if the linearity does hold the game back. I think experimenting with a new formula has merit, even if it doesn't always pay off.

    I don't even like Metroid Prime to begin with. Cryptic level design: The Game with a few sprinkles of shooting segments. No thanks, I would rather watch paint dry than play that personally.

      @@spartanx1386 Yeah they're just not for me, I like my games to be pure action with no puzzles/scanning I have to do. I never finished any of the Prime games for that reason, I was expecting more of a shooter but what I got was Zelda with guns and I don't want that sort of game.

Im not that person who only wants action, like doom, which is definitely not my game. But i see why it wouldn’t be everyones type, most people assume its a bad game just because they dont like it, glad to see that you admit its just not your type, just like a purely action game isnt my type of game (except halo, but that also has a great atmosphere and story).
