    I have been dealing with sudden anxiety for the past 2 years and the breathing problem is definitely something very scary. No matter how many inhales I do, I felt I couldn't fill my lungs enough. Someone who does not experience this, cannot really understand how bad this is. I am glad I came across this video. Thank you.

    Doing that controlled paused made me realise just how out of hand my breathing has been getting. Nearly immediately I felt that urge. I guess if my breathing patterns have been going untreated for multiple years now, it's going to take a long time to get back to what was my normal. But I truly hope following some of the recommendations on the video along with my doctors that things will at least start getting a little easier soon.

    Would you agree that sometimes some capacity has to be built…. Meet the client where they are and build. Also There is a heuristic in our culture that we rely on the professional to ‘do’ something to us to solve the problem. And clients can often present in alignment with that - somehow it would be rude to say ‘I want to sort this situation for myself but need your help to get me over the line’

    • @anxietybeatinghacks
      @anxietybeatinghacks 24 дня назад

      I would agree absolutely that some capacity has to be built... and yes... we need to meet the client where they are and build... but yet there is some responsibility for them to be open to be met and guided. Yes clients can present in alignment with the notion "they want something to be done to them" and in practice am very forgiving of that, and will work to help them understand their role. However, unfortunately there are some who demand all results with little to no responsibility and who also see it as one sided relationship that you MUST help them at their convenience.

    I know this is all in my head, I’ve had symptoms from chest pain that went away after reassurance, I woke up with morning nausea and heart palpitations, I went to the doctor he said heartbeat sounded fine, lungs sounded healthy, heart rate was healthy. So really there is only 1 reason all this is happening. All I had now is this air hunger, which I really only feel when I’m consciously thinking about my breathing, if I’m distracted my breathing is something I forget about, and I also feel air hunger when I first wake up in the morning and feel the urge to take deeper breaths.

    • @anxietybeatinghacks
      @anxietybeatinghacks 21 час назад

      Well it's not really all in your head in the sense that IF you have been overbreathing for a little while due to anxiety then your body can become hypersensitive to CO2 which the exercises outlined on my other video on air hunger will help deal with. Good luck.

  • @ericoropeza8303

    If you have a shortness of breath and it turns out that you have good working lungs and heart. Then check if you have Nasal Obstruction. Which is checking your nose. That is what I checked, and my doctor said that I had a really bad Nasal Obstruction. So I am getting surgery most likely to take out the obstruction. It was a relief to finally find out what was causing my shortness of breath. So I advise everyone to not stop checking what can cause your shortness of breath because there has to be an answer. It took me 3 whole months not knowing what it was. :(

    Hi Howard, I struggle with this issue, and I’ve been practicing this technique for the last week. I’ve been feeling a bit better, but still struggle with the shortness of breath from anxiety. I still get it in anxious situations at work or it will come on in waves throughout the day for hours. Over time, does this method help even in times when your body perceives a threat and you get shortness of breath as a result of that?

    • @anxietybeatinghacks

      I do a lot of work with people to help them calm their body from responding to these suggestions as though they are threat. Over time the shortness of breath can disappear both from the gentle breathing exercises and the anxiety work.

    I got my CO2 levels checked and they came back normal. Does that mean this doesn't apply to me or does science work weird and maybe this can still apply to me? I would pls like if u replied, Howard. Thanks for your time as always. I am suffering rn of shortness of breath.

    • @anxietybeatinghacks
      @anxietybeatinghacks 20 часов назад

      How are you getting on? It's not that the CO2 levels are low... or high (so they will show up as normal) it's that you are hypersensitive to co2 rising. So you get the signal too quickly to breathe (to get rid of what your body is thinking is too much co2). The exercises outlined work well but you have to ensure that you are doing breath-holds for an appropriate amount of time else you can trigger anxiety. If you were trying to build muscles you wouldn't start with a weight that you could barely lift at all... nor would you start with a weight that was so light you can practically lift it forever. You would choose a weight that you can just about do but the last 2 reps were a little tough. The same applies with choosing how long you do the exercise for and for how long you hold your breath for. If you have been struggling with the breathing exercises it may be you tried to do them for too long or have breath holds that were too long.

    • @anxietybeatinghacks
      @anxietybeatinghacks 20 часов назад

      You should by the end of the exercise feel a mild but tolerable feeling of air hunger.

    It affects your self-esteem, and this anxiety probably does make it worse. But I also have it bad when I lie down to sleep; this tells me that it isn't all in my head. It could be intermittent asthma because it is not every day I suffer from it. Ive been months without it bothering me. Ive had all the checks at the doctors, and no problems were found. I've recently been eating better in the last few months; I've never been healthier infact than I am now, and yet my breathing has gotten worse. So, It could be connected in some way to food or my new eating habits. It could be something as simple as not eating enough in the day, low blood sugar, low electrolytes, the list goes on.. and it's frustrating not knowing what it is :(

    • @ericoropeza8303

      Thats crazy, I have been struggling with a big shortness of breath these past 3 months. This all started once I went 26 hours without eating. I fasted for one day and on the 26th hour I started to realize I couldn't breathe at all and my hands started to shake. So, I broke my fast on the 26 hour and felt slightly better. But ever since then I have been having the same sensation running through my body. I still can't breathe at all, and I am suffering. My doctors said they don't think this has to do with fasting but who knows. I just want to breathe again. :(

    I have been struggling with a severe shortness of breath these past 3 months. I have just been so hopeless, and I've just been purely suffering. To make a long story short, my doctors and cardiologists have told me I am completely healthy after going to the doctors so many times. So now I will try these breathing exercises starting today and see what it does. I really hope this works because my life has been basically really miserable, and I'm purely suffering because I feel like my breathing is completely blocked off and I just can't breathe fully from my mouth and especially through my nose. This is the weirdest problem I ever had in my life. Not being able to breathe for almost no reason. I just pray to God this works. Thanks, Howard, for sharing your knowledge on this. Let's see what happens to me soon after doing this consistently everyday. I am 18 years old by the way and I know what a full breath feels like and now I can't breathe but Ik soon I will breathe like I used to hopefully. I'll keep you updated and anyone else if they care.

      Have you tried the breathing exercise I mention on the video. Gentle restrictive breathing exercises can be highly useful in helping you get back to a normal tolerance of CO2 which can be crucial in good breathing function. Additionally, dealing with anxiety in general is useful too as anxiety can cause overbreathing too.

    Hey Howard, I was wondering if you could make a video outlining the physical symptoms that could possibly be caused by "air hunger". Of course, those of us who experience this know we "feel" anxious. For example, I have for a long time been experiencing tightness in the neck, slight dizziness, a general feeling of head pressure/tension, tinnitus, and probably more. It would be reassuring to know these symptoms can be associated with chronic hyperventilation / air hunger. The uncertainty of these symptoms keeps anxiety high thus keeping the anxiety cycle going. Cheers!

    Very informative stream! Just one thing u said worried me a bit, about air hunger possibly coming back for some people when they're going through stress. I've just started making progress with it and would hate to have to go through all that again. Surely it's not guaranteed it'll come back, and over time I can get it to go for good right?

      Great question and let me reassure you as to what I meant. Think of it like the distinction between "having anxiety" and "suffering with anxiety". Everyone has anxiety from time to time. It's entirely normal, but SUFFERING with anxiety is different. What feels a like a severe never ending cycle that you can't break out of. Air hunger in my experience has been like this. I no longer suffer with air hunger... it's no longer chronic, terrifying, or racked with anxiety. However, it's entirely normal when anyone is overly stressed etc that their body responds in certain ways. I do believe that certain people get tension headaches, others get a 'dicky tummy' and others may notice their breathing patterns get a touch worse. However, when you are more accepting of that and don't turn it into a story of suffering it doesn't spiral down into the depths of air hunger. It might be a very slight feeling that you don't rise too and then passes. If I led people to believe that once air hunger has gone completely they'll never even have a slight sensation of it ever again... they are likely to become incredibly anxious and spiral back down if they do have a slight feeling again. In just the same way, if I lead and anxiety sufferer to think that they will never experience anxiety EVER again it will be unrealistic and set them up for failure. However, I have seen people stop suffering with air hunger and anxiety all the time. I hope this helps clarify. In fact, the more you are willing to accept the notion that a little of these feelings now and then can be normal for you... the less you suffer and the less it gets worse and the less these symptoms appear.

      @@anxietybeatinghacksThanks for getting back to me, and i do understand what u mean just freaking out a little. Would u say u get more moments without air hunger compared to with it tho? Just feel like theres no point even trying if it's just gonna keep coming back, feeling very demotivated :/

      @@bobguy472799% air hunger free totally. And the odd 1% doesn’t bother me as it doesn’t then escalate any further. But if you don’t allow for that small wiggle room you can end up spiralling.
