    And by the way, you may discover when you implement these strategies that you start reducing anxiety overall too :-)

    Thank you for this! My story is the same as pretty much everyone else’s here… X-rays, CT scans, EKGS, blood work… everything fine. Been dealing with this for a little over a year. I would always think that no it’s not anxiety causing it, it’s causing me anxiety and panic attacks. Wrong! Underlying anxiety and stress is causing it and then I would just exacerbate the anxiety because I couldn’t breathe and then would have panic attacks. I feel like I can’t take my mind off my breathing and it will last for weeks.
    Currently trying to ignore the urge to take a deep breath and reminding myself that my body doesn’t need the breath, my anxiety does.

    incredible. i have been dealing with this for years. being in and out of hospitals, they just told me it’s anxiety and they prescribed me ativan. clearly it didn’t work for long. i thought it was my diaphragm being “paralyzed”. but after seeing this video i no longer think that. for years i’d get really bad nighttime anxiety and horrible insomnia. i’d cry all night long thinking i could never get better. i’d yawn all day just to get more air in. it was killing me and making my depression worse. this video is changing my perspective and my outlook on my breathing. i suspected i was an over breather and that i had permanently ruined my way of breathing. i always thought that i would be like this forever. im going to take your advice and run with it because i just want to feel normal again. it’s so scary feeling like there’s something wrong with you that you can’t fix. my anxiety is so bad i don’t even want to leave my house. i dread going to work because i’m always so conscious about my breathing. i feel like i might pass out at work. i hate talking too bc i always feel out of breath and like you said, i also always feel like i can’t finish a sentence or talk for too long or else i would disturb my concentration on trying to breathe manually. now im trying my best to fight the urge to yawn to get more air it. i feel like i might die if i don’t yawn, but after that feeling of air hunger passes and i fight off the yawn, i feel alright. i feel like i can keep doing this. i want to keep doing this because i want to be okay again. thank you so much. i appreciate the work you’re doing and the advice you’re giving. you’ve changed my life.

    • @anxietybeatinghacks
      @anxietybeatinghacks  Год назад +2

      @@brightfuture9099 This is something that I really get into when I work 1 on 1 with people and in my 7 week free from air hunger programme. Conceptually this is about separating out the sensation from the images and words that you add to the sensation. In other words the sensation around air hunger if you don’t add story to it may be unpleasant but can you see it as just a sensation. In other words… this is about training your body not to respond to the sensation as though it’s a threat. The more you able to experience the feeling without responding to it as a threat the less it appears. Why… because the brain likes to keep flagging stuff up that poses a threat (on it’s radar for survival purposes) the less you respond to thoughts and feelings of air hunger as a threat the less it needs to appear on the radar. Then overtime you notice it comes up less and less.

  • @daveygee87
    @daveygee87 Месяц назад +2

    I so greatly appreciate this information! Currently experiencing SSRI discontinuation symptoms that are compounded by a history of pulmonary trauma. The feeling of breathlessness has been a bear to deal with, as well as the subsequent anxiety from being hyper conscious and ruminating on my lung function. I have recently been admitted to an ER here in America due to the panic this has caused relative to my own medical PTSD. They performed just about all of the imaging and diagnostic testing you could ask for; all results were within normal parameters. This had a two-pronged effect - I was relieved that I was not dying, but I have grown severely frustrated at these "phantom" symptoms - "what the hell is actually wrong with me? Am I crazy?".... Only once I made the connection to anxiety and my SSRI discontinuation symptoms that the picture started to become clearer (I had never even heard of air hunger until I started being a little more proactive in my own research and discovery). Fast forward to today, I've found this video and feel so incredibly validated that I'm not imagining all of these things, and hopeful that what I've been experiencing can be corrected by measures within my control here at home. TYSM!

Yet it's still here. I'm doing these exercises and believe me they help. I can go for a couple of weeks and I'm fine then for whatever reason it's back. Will keep plodding on,good luck buddy hope you feel better soon.

    FINALLY someone who understands what I'm going through!!!! My breathing gets so shallow and it tricks my brain into thinking that I'm having anxiety/panic attacks. My ability to speak gets so restricted because I feel like I have no air in my lungs so either I'll speak really fast, talk very little, or just not bother talking at all. I really hope there is someone in my area that I can actually talk to who knows what I'm dealing with.
    Funny/sad thing is that my doctor prescribed me SSRI/Anti-depressents which actually worked worked (gave me the courage to even get a GF who turned into my fiancee)...but I was spending $100 a month on them. Then I got laid off and had to benefits so I stopped...and now I'm getting these feelings again. I really hope I can fix this without having to take meds all my life.

      I have zero stress yet I have all those symptoms coincidentally after catching cov!d for the very first time back in April 2021. My symptoms cost me my social life, outdoor life, job/work life, workout/weightlifting life etc. I was also at the peak of good health and enjoying life and now all that has changed since April 2021. The medical field and ER will blame it on "it's just anxiety" or "it's just stress" causing my symptoms. The reality is that "it's just stress" is a medical place holder for something that the medical team can't identify to diagnose you with. Therefore, that's what they will always tell you and are taught in medical schools to tell the patient.
      I think cov!d damaged both the autonomic nervous/muscle systems. Apparently, everyone with Long Cov!d or post cov!d syndrome experiences not just shortness of breath due to what could be respiration/ diaphragm muscle freeze/malfunction along with abnormal high pulse rate upon slight exertion but also malfunction with the LES (Lower Esophageal Sphincter Muscles) and swallowing muscles.
      In my case, I apparently had chronic gastritis due to poor diet and it also could be due to inflammation caused by post-cov!d damage. Additionally, I also had a h.pylori infection with symptoms that was blamed on anxiety nonsense for 8 months until it was diagnosed by a gastroenterologist after doing an upper endoscopy procedure. I think the h.pylori bacteria remained dormant until my whole system started to malfunction after catching cov!d.
      So, all in all, most of my symptoms could be linked to post-cov!d damage, GERD, stomach and esophagus inflammation caused by both poor diet and, h.pylori infection .

    Hello!
    Thank you so much for this video.. I'm currently at home because of my symptoms of Burnout. It's been a Month and I'm experiencing this "Air Hunger" for 2 weeks on and off. I'm a Nurse so I always try to analyze the physical problem first and not the mental health. But searching and analysing my physical symptoms it didn't made sense that my breathing became better when I made sports or walk or just beeing distracted and really BAD when I'm at the sofa or trying to sleep or eat or just not do nothing.
    Take this example: As I was watching the video or trying to concentrate at the exercise I couldn't breath normaly but now that I'm writing and having to concentrate because English isn't my Mother tongue my breathing is normal.
    But I'm sure that when I go to bed and try to sleep my brain is going to go rogue and say: "look, you're breathing normaly.. why not try to take a deeeeep breath?"
    or in the morning when I wake up and my first thought is "how's today? take a deep breath and test it"
    It's very hard to go through it . But if you say you went throught it and still alive and better then I'll trust you and have a little bit more of hope.

    I’ve had this since I was 14. Never knew what it was, always wondered why I couldn’t breathe. Always happened and would always cause anxiety attacks. Eventually i distanced myself from uncomfortable situations and I’ve barely left the house since they scared me away from college when I was 17. Years of taking different anxiety medication and seeing therapists and them never fully understanding, me always feeling like I’m just different to everyone around me. Im 25 now, managed to get a job shortly away where I’ve at this stage made an area I’m comfortable with, but it’s absolutely taken over and ruined my life. Hey Howard, I was wondering if you could make a video outlining the physical symptoms that could possibly be caused by "air hunger". Of course, those of us who experience this know we "feel" anxious. For example, I have for a long time been experiencing tightness in the neck, slight dizziness, a general feeling of head pressure/tension, tinnitus, and probably more. It would be reassuring to know these symptoms can be associated with chronic hyperventilation / air hunger. The uncertainty of these symptoms keeps anxiety high thus keeping the anxiety cycle going. Cheers!

I also work with people to help them both with the breathing issues AND deal with anxiety issues too.

It took me a long time to understand I wasn’t dying and it was an emotional issue not a physical one, but it’s debilitating none the less. It’s called 6 breaths per minute (Buteyko method). Try it lying down quietly and do it without any pre-amble. Once you finish the exercise you’ll be much more comfortable. This is going to be a long winded response, but my experience confirms everything you've said.
    Wow, I dealt with this for a few months. Was told it was anxiety (which i believe now 100% contributes, even though what ive been anxious about is the breathing itself, not external factors). I was even sent to an internest, respiratory therapists, all matter of blood work, and no answers on how to fix other than anti-depressants, and as i wasn't depressed, chose not to use them as a solution. So i was at a loss, was told to try all matter of breathing exercise, which only seemed to make it worse (well now i know why). One day, it seemed to just go away. Its heen about 3 years, and all the sudden came back about a week ago. I've been struggling to sleep and that led me to this video. I watched the first portion of the video up to the point where he explains that it's likely a result of CO2 imbalance.
    I am a paramedic and happen to be at work as i struggle to sleep between calls. This means i have access to the equipment to monitor CO2 levels. I decided to test it. I attached myself to the monitor via nasal cannula, my CO2 levels were reading 21 mmHg. Normal levels are 35-45 mmHg by Cannula. I then attached myself to oxygen, to see if it relieved the air hunger. I ended up slowly raising it until i was on about 4 litres per minute of O2 (should have been plenty for the purpose of this experiment). I experienced no relief, and in fact started to feel light headed as my oxygen increased, but my CO2 stayed the same and even dropped down to 18 mmHg at one point. To me this once again confirmed Dr. Coopers statement. And remember, I purposely hadn't watched the part of the video that explained how to fix it yet as i didn't want that to influence the results of my little test.
    After my test, i unhooked myself and finished the video, i have been practicing breathing through my nose (rather than my usual mouth breathing) and taking more shallow breaths. My initial thoughts are that it seems to already be helping, my body definitely needs to be re-trained, but i 100% believe this is already helping and will eventually be the fix to my air hunger.
    All that being said.... thank you for finally providing a real solution to this frustrating problem. Will try to remember to come back and update my results after ive tried some training.

      Holy moly this is crazy cool that you tested this out with your gear... and thank you for sharing this. Please note: however, I'm not a doctor (but I do think I'd look great with a stethoscope). I'm just someone who through research, trial and error and a lot of experience working with anxiety (and being an air hunger sufferer previously) began to make sense of how we become hypersensitive to CO2 in our blood stream so we keep getting the urge to breath (it's really a pH balancing mechanism).

Great to find some info that really works - seriously took a load off on Christmas Day and meant I was able to enjoy the evening. Thanks!

      I'm so pleased that you found this video. I too am so frustrated by the lack of awareness "out there" re: how to treat this issue properly. I was recently presenting these strategies to an audience of 100 therapists and many confessed to have been telling people with these symptoms to "just take deeper breaths". How you getting on now?

    When I was 40 I remember straining to catch my breath when walking up a hill. I couldn’t get enough air. An elderly man, about 80 passed me without much effort. He showed me I could get a lot further if I took short shallow breaths in and out. I found it very weird and difficult but persisted. Eventually I was able to walk up the whole hill in one go.

      My pleasure and so pleased that you are finding it helpful. Just to clarify too for anyone reading this... the control pause is simply a test to see how your CO2 sensitivity is getting on... the exercise I describe at the end of the video that I recommend doing is not a controlled pause... but a gentle restrictive breathing exercise. The control pause you can repeat as a test to see the progress you are making. Hope this makes sense.

      That makes sense. The control pause is a test to see how long you can go. The exercise is half that time, to gradually build up. Then you can do the control pause test again, to see if the exercise has helped yet. @@anxietybeatinghacks

    I've been suffering with this for 3 years since getting long covid in March 2020. I also have asthma which makes matters worse. I've been to various doctors, ended up in emergency and they all said it was anxiety. WHen I watched this last night it was like WOW. So many others suffering the same problem so I'm not crazy after all! My partner kept saying it's stress and that the symptoms are imaginary. The pressure on the chest, the chest pains, unable to breathe naturally, all upped my anxiety levels and made my asthma worse. Now that I understand what happens in the body it all makes sense. I did some exercises last night and I fell sleep naturally for the first time in a year. I woke up today and did some breathing exercises again. I feel confident that this will help me. I will keep on at it because my "condition" didn't happen overnight. It took time to get this bad and will take time to undo 3 years of bad breathing. Thank you for this channel. I feel it will help others as well. Mia (Australia).

      I'm so pleased that you have found the video useful. I think COVID did have the effect (that many people are NOT talking about) of getting many people to become over aware of their breathing patterns. (Constantly checking they could breathe - as a sign that they didn't have covid or weren't suffering too bad with it). Then breathing get's logged as a threat by the brain and anxiety causes over breathing. Then we end up becoming hyper sensitive to CO2 due to the over breathing and the cycle continues. Practicing the gentle restrictive breathing exercises outlined at the end of this vid AND removing the threat response to the sensations around breathing does rectify the issue. Good luck.

      It works, what’s key is remind yourself that highering C02 which is the feeling will make you calmer and feel better once your body readjusts to it. Look forward to the feeling, see it as an opportunity to make yourself feel better. For me, after feeling and accepting the air hunger, my breathing is so slow gentle and subconscious that I feel like I’m meditating almost. Fear causes you to overbreathe and will cause vicious cycle, it is just your C02 levels rising in body. And once you stop thinking it’s a problem, your brain won’t notice it anymore.

    • @anxietybeatinghacks
      @anxietybeatinghacks  Год назад

      Sorry to hear that you have been struggling with this. I REALLY do understand just how awful it can feel. But REMEMBER this is NOT that you are getting too much oxygen. It's that chronic overbreathing over a prolonged period causes you to become TOO sensitive to normal levels of Carbon Dioxide. Carbon dioxide building up is the thing that gives you the "urge to breathe" and if it's too sensitive you keep getting that feeling too readily.

    Thank you! I have been dealing with this for years and talked to multiple clinicians yet none had an answer. After watching this, it feels so obvious now with the issue being CO2 hypersensitivity or low tolerance. That is exactly what it feels like, not a lack of oxygen. And I’ve wondered why holding my breath would paradoxically help when all this time I thought I wasn’t getting enough oxygen.
    From what I’ve heard from divers, that “urge to breathe” that the buildup of CO2 causes activates much earlier than is physiologically necessary. So it’s like that urge to breathe is kicking in even earlier for us with this issue.
    It also makes it more obvious why some kind of cardio exercise is so important since it naturally builds that tolerance when we’re out of breath after a long run or some similar form of exercise. 🙏

    Thank you so much!! I have had a bad flare up with anxiety and this is a new symptom of mine. I’ve been struggling with health anxiety and the feeling of “not breathing” freaked me out at first but my doctor told me my bloodwork is amazing so i didn’t know what was wrong but that was reassuring. How did you deal with the thoughts about the breathing because i struggle with those, like i’m fine when i’m in school because i’m distracted but then i’ll get an intrusive thought like “how’s your breathing?” or “are you breathing?” and it causes a bit of anxiety and i spiral into an air hunger cycle again :(

      @anxietybeatinghacks  2 года назад +3

      The fact your blood work is amazing is great and reassuring and likely you are someone for whom these exercise I outline will likely be very beneficial. As mentioned the feeling of air hunger is triggered when your sensitivity to increases in carbon dioxide is too high (a result of over-breathing likely due to anxiety). Systematically doing the gentle reduced breathing exercises will likely help over time. Have you checked your control pause? In relation to those intrusive thought like, “how’s your breathing?” Etc I might do a whole other video to handle this one in more detail but essentially acknowledging the thought and not treating the THOUGHT as threat will help. So, last year, I referred myself to a breathing specialist and what you say in your video is more or less what she said. So she gave me a breathing exercise to do 3 times a day and it worked well. However I do still have this urge to take a big breath. The doctor mentioned that it’s like a tic and that it’s to do with my OCD & Autism.

    This is horrendous! I’ve had this for just over a week now. It keeps keeps coming over me every 5 minutes, this urge to take a deep breath or yawn. Sometimes my body does it without me realising it’s happened. I’ve been to AnE had bloods, chest X-ray, oxygen levels, BP all fine. I just want to stop taking these deep breaths all the time. It’s making my ribs ache!

    Thank you so much for this! This has only started recently, on and off for the past year for me, but I've struggled with anxiety as well as mouth breathing for years. Being only a young adult I hope I can follow your advice and fix my breathing habits now while I'm young- this video helped explain so much about how I've been feeling!
    (Edit, control pause is only about 5 seconds at the moment, hopefully in the future I can bring a positive update! :D)

      Good to hear from you and pleased that it seems to resonate. How have you got on with the exercises?

    Excellent video. Describes me to a T. I get real bad ocd breathing especially when I lay down to sleep. Now I associate sleep with fear and just makes everything worse. I can't shift focus off of my breath and I start to get air hunger.

      Yes FEAR and anxiety around this issue can be a big problem. A) it causes people to hyperfixate around all sensations breathing related. B) the anxiety causes people to get stressed which increases respiration and increases the chance of over-breathing which exacerbates the issue. The real solution to this is to BOTH deal with the CO2 hypersensitivity AND deal with the threat response to the sensations so that anxiety doesn't kick off and perpetuate the issue. These are BOTH things I cover during my live group air hunger resolution programmes.
