Ohme EV Smart Chargers in Australia
This week I interview Bradley from Ohme who explains the difference between a tethered and untethered charger, utilising solar, taking advantage of Time of Use energy tariffs and the ability to lock an Ohme charger against theft. Have to say the app is really easy to use.
I'm learning lots about EV home charging and plan to investigate more brands as I often get asked about which one to buy. Do you recommend any?
This is the first time I've been able to charge at home, which has been an absolute game changer. I don't have a driveway, so I've been running a cable out to the street. I have a footpath license from Inner west Council, public liability and a cable cover. I have to display the li...

I installed my ohme charger in the UK over 4 years ago. It reads the variable tariff from my electiricty provider and charges when its cheapest. The variable rates are published daily and the price differs every half hour. Works a treat.
So clever.
Another brilliant video - makes it all so clear.
Many thanks!
Been a while since I've seen someone do a video like this.. 😁 very informative 👍
Thank you.
I didn’t think the AC chargers could get the state of change
I recently ran the numbers on a 'dumb' (Tesla) charger vs a smart (Fronius) charger to see which would be cheaper in the long run. We have a small (5 kW) solar system and the car (Tesla Model Y) is mainly parked outside my wife's workplace most of the day, so I was skeptical about the amount of excess solar we could actually put into the car. The Tesla charger cost $770 (from Bunnings; $800 direct from Tesla) and the Fronius was $1,800, both excluding installation. I calculated that it would take over 10 years to pay back the $1,030 difference by using excess solar at the rate we charge (roughly once per week) so went with the Tesla charger. I should point out that the Tesla charger is not a dumb charger when you have a Tesla car, as the smarts are in the car. If we later add a Powerwall battery we can also charge with excess solar. If we'd had a different car brand, we'd have gone with a smart charger to schedule charging, and the Ohme looks like a very good option.
The Fronius gear is super high quality, and they sure charge for it. The 2 year warranty is not a good look for Fronius - they should back up their product.
@ Agreed. And the maximum operating temp is 40 degrees. Fine for Europe maybe, but not for Australia!
@@chrish2879In Geraldton on the Sunday before Christmas it was 45c in the shade, 49.7c in the sun…If we had a powerwall (on our house) it would have to be mounted in sun on the North side of the house, it wouldn’t last too long.
Pity it can’t also handle EV to grid.
Sarah have a look at grabbing yourself a cheap monopod for your camera. These are light, quick to setup and add most of the stability of a tripod without being big and heavy. They will save your arm!
I’ll check it out. Thanks!
OMG what sorcery is this!? This is exactly what I need! Thanks so much for the advice.
What's the cost of the time of filming?
Sarah, your videos are fantastic - full of useful information. I did have one question for you - do you think EV's will ever enable 22kw ac charging? I know there are a limited amount of cars that enable it, but interested in your thoughts ie will 22kw ever be widely implemented? I have three phase power and tossing up whether to future proof my house with the full 22kw. Hope that makes sense!😀
I think they will, only a matter of time. Well I hope so at least! I think 11kW will be the norm pretty soon. As more 22kW pole chargers appear I think carmakers will start adding it.
I think i read somewhere that it's just a matter of cost on whether they install a 7, 11 or 22kW onboard charger
Did you ask Bradley if he was enjoying the British winter this year?
being retired I can watch the solar output and run the car charger, dish washer and AC, and run them when cheapest. It would be nice to be able to programme it.
this is great news. I've just shared this to a couple of friends of mine who want an electric car but don't have off street parking. This would be perfect for them
Fantastic, 20m cable and footpath crossing will work my my apartment charging solution. For me this makes the difference in paying 15¢/ kWh (controlled load tarrif) instead of 75¢/ kWh from my local chargefox charging point.
Are you able to add 4 to 5 unique emojis for the paid members? It can be done in ‘Earn’ tab in Settings
One thing I don't get is security - what is to stop someone coming along and stealing your cable? Maybe I am worrying about an unlikely event.
When an EV is charging the cable is locked to the car. No one can steal it.
@@ElectrifyThisthanks again!
Get an ICE vehicle, ten minutes at a gas station, they are everywhere. My diesel ranger 800 - 1000km range.
The point of the video is that you don't have to travel to a gas station and spend time filling your car with Fossil Fuel - and that has to be considered a huge win. Not to mention using free solar power for your car. Cheaper, more time efficient, less damaging to the environment.
Unless you do the Birdsville track as part of your commute then bragging that you have 1000km of range is pointless. A short stop every couple of hours will keep an EV topped up and able to do any distance. The average Australian only drives 30 kms a day. I really like only spending 10 seconds to plug my car in when I charge from home
I prefer not heating the planet and poisoning people. I’d never buy another ICE.
Perfect. I've seen some dodgy cable runs to charge vehicles curbside but this is safe and practical. I'm assuming your cable is recovered after charging (i'm adversely thinking theft).
You’re absolutely correct
Love your passion for EV's, keep it up
Gullies across footpaths are such a neat idea! ‘No brainer’ now I know about it. Thanks for sharing.
Did you get a custom 20m cable length? I can't see the 20m option on the cable providers website.
I did. They made it custom.
@@ElectrifyThis Thanks!
That’s awesome I’m so happy for you. Respect for the 20m cable. I’ve got a 10m and I thought I had overdone it. In reality that has saved me so many times.
The 20m gives me the option of 3 parking spots.
Thanks for showing how Inner West is leading the way. Hopefully other councils can watch & learn
Great work. We certainly need progressive / sensible councils. We have an 11kw charger at home in rural NSW but when we visit Newcastle the 10A portable charger is required and to charge on the street. I have a similar high vis cover but certainly no official approval to use it.
I loved you in Harry Potter… Draco Malfoy was easily your most engaging character to date. ❤
Bless your wildly unoriginal wit.
@ "Wait until my father hears about this!" 😂🤣😆
I absolutely love this! Wonder if it will work with angle parking scenarios?
Can’t see why not.
Idiots, can’t use blue as it causes confusion between disabled parks
🎶🎶 Bridie come back… 🎶🎶
I did see these as I recently drove through NSW, on my way from Vic to Qld. I totally nerded out too.❤
Ha you are my people
White front seats and black rear seats! i am regretting not ordering the white interior, now ill have to find a wrecked one and swap to a white interior for my model 3
looked at buying a Tesla Y RWD s/hand this week. Awesome car, but my boss knocked it back saying its too flash for us.😢. My only gripe was the full summer sun through the glass. it was scalding hot. Apparently Tesla sell blinds that can be clipped to roof and hatch glass. DEFINITELY NEEDED in South Australia.
Great chat, full respect, as a fellow Model Y owner for about the same time. Yes, there are many ways to EV, but having done Sydney to Brisbane in one day, the Tesla Supercharger Network makes Tesla the best way to EV across Australia. PS. Like the White Seats at the front and the Black at the back Bridie!
Was the variant mentioned or did I miss it? I'm assuming a LR with only 3 stops to Sydney.
Hmmm I think you’re right. I’ll check.
It’s the RWD standard range.
@ Wow. Bridie's a truly economic driver! And thanks for these interviews - good information and great fun.
@@ElectrifyThisIt’s a RWD… the wheels have the black aero wheels
Our MY RWD is three weeks old and in our first week of ownership my wife had to drive it (alone) from the western suburbs of Melbourne to East Gippsland and back -- a round trip of about 800 km. Neither of us had ever charged an EV before but she managed it like a champ, assisted by the incredible Supercharger network which genuinely makes charging easier than filling with petrol. Plug and go, no messing around with apps or pre-payments or anything. We've since had a Tesla wall charger installed (available at Bunnings) which allows us to fully charge it overnight, and being the RWD version it has an LFP battery which wants to be charged to 100%. I honestly can't see us ever going back to an ICE car. We just need more rapid chargers!
I love this Chris. Great story, thanks for sharing.
Can agree with the car being ready before you are. Not long back from a 3300km trip Southern NSW/Victoria and used Superchargers exclusively. So easy these days
Love it
Yeah the model Y is great for camping in without the fixed parcel shelf. Even taking all the gear for a tent campsite it a struggle in a sedan, I bring a 380W fixed solar panel for the fridge, lights and charging devices. I usually need to unscrew the rear seat backs as they don't fold flat and the parcel shelf is fixed in my car. Goal is to get a Y or something with a hatch. Don't see anything as good as Tesla right now with their plug and play charging network for road trips.
Love your work, Model Y for the win, never ever going to drive a ICE car again. Just did the Sydney to Gold Coast trip $55.40. Superchargers all the way.
getting rid of the lexus SUV which is very high, for the Model y allows the dog easy access to the back. A nice interview; thank you. I have enjoyed those I have seen. I look forward to more.
Yep my friends wife just bought a Lexus SUV. Same price as a TESLA Y long range.. It's a tarted up Toyota for 80k AUD. must be mad.....
Completely ignoring it's an EV for the moment, just the sheer fact that it's a much better environment for the operator to be in. 3 gears, no constantly having to shift through upto 18 gears! and no vibration, has got to be a win for the trucking industry.
Such a great point.
When got some free time, any plan to visit the new Xpeng AU showroom in Mascot and do a walkaround video?
Sure thing. I couldn’t make it to the opening, but I’ll go and check it out in the new year. Great idea.
Brad is DISHY!! 😍
I'm so jealous. Love these videos. Let's hope whoever gets into government next don't do anything to change that 2027 objective. Unless it is too make production and use happen sooner.
💯
I like the car also. Just the price even for the base model is a bit high at $49.9k before on road costs.
300km isn't much... How long does it take to to charge all of those batteries to full? When you have a trip that is 1000km +, you can't really afford to charge your truck for however long that often, because drivers have deadlines. I used to have to go from Czech Republic to Denmark and I had to be there by the next day. It's about 950~ so I would have to charge it three times in that trip. It would probably be great for a national tranzit, but definitely cannot stand a chance in an international tranzit.
I encourage you to watch the in depth interview I did with Matt. He explains its use case.
Awesome!! Can't wait to start seeing these on the road!!
They’re already on our roads!
@@ElectrifyThis looking forward to driving past one, or even better, having a chat with the driver

@@ElectrifyThis He fabulous and always willing to help. I have known Philipa and Matt through Transport Women Australia Limited conferences and Events.
Great video!! That driver looks awesome too, looks like someone that it would be fun to have a couple of refreshments with. The only thing that I found disappointing in your video is that you didn't do the wine bottle test...
Matt Wood was SO lovely, we had a great day together. He drove trucks for 20 years and was also a journo, so a fountain of knowledge! I did consider trying to get my paws on a bottle of wine, but it s a strict zero alcohol policy for truck drivers, so it wouldn't have been the best look. But it did cross my mind.
@ElectrifyThis ahahaha no worries at all, it's fair enough! I'm sure the Volvo would've passed the test with flying colours anyway. We need more people like Matt!
Very cool 😎 .... very informative also, keep it up .👍
Thanks Darren.
