Hi Tom and thanks :-) I was in bands with Chris Lowe and Dave Ball at school. Sadly, I didn't make it like they did! My first electric guitar was a Hagstrom Deluxe, having tried and rejected Zentas and Auditions hahahahaha. First band was called 'Stallion' - when I saw Wayne's World I nearly wet myself. A few local covers bands ensued, two failed marriages and then it was this morning! Cheers, Gary :-)

Hi Rod :-) I know that the big day is coming and you must be driving yourself crazy with the choices. It seems like it's a great time to buy right now - the market's on it's uppers but don't rush into anything for the sake of a few quid. I think it's really wise to do the research as you're doing and guitars are like wine - only YOU know which one tastes the best. Hi Gary, I am driving myself a bit crazy, but I think it's because I've been looking around a bit too soon. I have seven more weeks to go before the finance drops into the bank. Every time I see something I really like it gets sold. I've got a couple of Bob's guitars on my watch list at the moment. Your white studio was there too but that's gone now so somebody got a cracker with that one.

Hi Jon :-) I feel your pain, dude. Well, we had the Custom Shop Theodore and a Custom Lite Les Paul but you've got to remember that things are grim oop north and we tend not to have Custom Shop money! I don't think I've even seen a Standard for about 5 years :-( To brighten your day though there's a Standard Nighthawk coming in for a restring and set-up. @@FoxysGuitarShow Hi Gary, i just buyed a Rickenbacker 381, with these pickups in it. the original bigger Humbuckers were broken. Its a strange but wonderfull scarce guitar. @@henryfranssen483 if it helps, I only use a Blackstar ID Core 40. No pedals, just the onboard effects. I bet that guitar of yours is terrific - those pickups are superb 😊🎸

Hi Alfred :-) Yes, they started using Richlite for the fretboards in 2012 and the purists didn't like it. I've had it on a couple of Midtowns and can't tell any difference either playing-wise or tonally. What I do like about it is that it looks a bit like ebony with my rubbish eyesight! Cheers, Gary :-)

Hi Mike :-) I remember him famously playing a Gretsch White Falcon so I Googled him and still can't find him playing an SG with minis but I found a photo of one with regular humbuckers and you're quite right, it looks very similar. Sadly there's not that much out there about him - clearly an underrated musician. He was a top guitarist, too. Sad early loss. Cheers, Gary :-)

just add one of those posh lyre vibrolas, that will counteract the weight and looks just smashing.

Hi Rod :-) Very sensible questions here and I'd expect nothing less! SG's traditionally have neck dive but because they're so light it's barely noticeable and this can be easily countered (or counterbalanced) by wearing a thick strap. I think these minis have a similar output to those in a Firebird and I agree about the neck pickup - it has a lovely thick and creamy tone. Cheers, Gary :-)

@@FoxysGuitarShow Hi Gary, I went into Norwich today to check out the guitar stores and play a Les Paul or two (more like 6!) I really wanted to love them but the only one that floated my boat was a used Epiphone. That guitar was a joy to play and would have been tempting if the previous owner hadn't decided to fit a whammy bar to it It was really well set up and sounded great but that vibrato did seem to effect tuning stability a bit. Every thing else I tried they'd just felt like they'd opened the box and hung it on the wall. Everything was way above my budget anyway with prices north of two grand and for that kind of money you'd expect someone to set it up a little bit first. One, (to be fair an Epiphone) felt like playing a cheese cutter, with the intonation not even close. I did try the 50s fatter neck and that is definitely is not for me. I came away from the store thinking when the time comes to get one in a few weeks I'll look on your listings or your mate Bob's and get one that's been in your hands.

Hi Andrew :-) I had the four procedures in one go - eyelids, eye bags, face lift and neck lift and it was 10K at the Signature Clinic in Rochdale. If you went to Turkey for what I had done you'd pay £7.5K and there's no NHS back-up if it all goes wrong. I'm mostly healed in my face and neck but my eyelids upper and lower are still a couple of months off. They reckon 6 months before you're fully cooked. Their website gives you a fixed price menu. Hi Donnie :-) Gibson serial numbers use the first and fifth numbers to identify the year and the three numbers in-between denote the actual day of production. Whatever's left at the end is the number in that production run/factory ID depending on the year. They did have a few years off this format where they used the first two numbers to indicate the year and this was from 2014 to mid 2019. They then reverted to 1 and 5 for the year. Cheers, Gary :-)

@@FoxysGuitarShow hi Gary, great to hear from you and yes you just described my guitar to a tee. I customised mine slightly, I swapped out the black scratchplate and pickup rings etc for cream ones, and the speed knobs l changed for reflector tops so it looked more like a sixties model. The original tuners are still working as new but l put cream coloured tulip buttons on them. The next job on the list is a tp6 tailpiece and roller bridge. I've had her since late 2009 and she'll stay with me til l die. All the best Jay

Hi Rod :-) Gibson make a pickup for all seasons and the minis may look the same on varying guitars (SG, Firebird, LP) but come with different horsepower. IMO these particular minis produce a tone I haven't extracted from a 490/498 but with amp modelling it's probably a moot point these days. For dinosaurs like me it's all about the pickup and although these opinions are purely subjective my favourite combination is the 498/490 set-up. It's all down to personal preference though. @@FoxysGuitarShow Hi! Mine has the exact finish as yours. I like the knobs on yours. Mine had the "block" knobs but I was inspired yesterday to buy top-hat knobs like yours and replaced them thanks to seeing yours. I even added pointers like I have on my sunburst Les Paul!
