  • I like these. No frills, no nonsense and, more importantly, no sodding push/pull pots. Good honest rock machine with a maple neck and quality 61 Zebra Classic pickups. Get one while they're (relatively) cheap.

Hi Mick and thanks :-) I think you've put it really well. Medium priced Gibson is bang on. Glad you liked it! There's still a few Les Paul Wednesday slots before we move and another couple of weekend budget guitars. Cheers, Gary :-)

Hi Gary, first of all what a wonderful sounding guitar, I love everything about the sound of this one. I thought the clean tones were stunning. When you have the gain cranked up they all sound fantastic but I always think the clean tones really let you know what is going on with an instrument. I'm just not a fan of the look of Zebra pickups. The thing is every time you demo and instrument with them on I always really like the sound they make. If I could get a guitar tone as good as that on my little recordings nobody clicks on I be a happy man. Of course to do that I'd need your fingers too and that wouldn't be so easy to find for sale on Ebay.

Hi Rod hahahahaha :-) If I thought I could get a few quid for them they'd be on eBay tomorrow! I'm considering letting the other kidney go at some point, too. So, you raise an interesting point here. Firstly, if you like the sound of the 61 and 57 Zebra Classics but you're not keen on the look of them, you can pop chrome or gold pickup shrouds on them - they pop straight on and can be fixed in place with either solder or kitchen sealant (really). Sound - wise, I've been using a little Blackstar ID Core 40 for the last several years and I like it at least as much as my Vox AC30 from the 70's. I've also got an ID Core 20 that I paid £50 for and it's just as good. The onboard effects are amazing. Cheers, Gary :-)

Hi Gary, I don't have the skills to start removing pickups and doing stuff like that. I've been really spoilt that way. I had a good friend who I'd known since I was about 12 who was the local Guitar Doctor. He did various mods for me over the years and back in the days when I played for a living every 6 months or so I'd just ask for "A clean bill of health" and he'd do whatever my guitar needed after going in and out of a tour bus 100 times. Every guitar I bought from the 70s until about ten years ago he'd set up for me. Sadly he's no longer with us so these days I just have to do what I can.
Gear wise, when I was gigging I had a Mesa Boogie studio 20. I don't even own an amp these days. I use a gizmo called a "Cube Baby" and connect it to my PC via a little interface thing and it records really well. A night in the pub would cost more than a Cube Baby. There are plenty of demos of them on YT here's a link to the demo that made me decide to get one. In fact I have two just to make things future proof.

Not sure about the cherry finish. Quite like the satin look though.
    Sounds great though.
    Thanks for another great review.
    Adios Amigo.

Hi Pete and thanks :-) Luckily, these came in Cherry, Chocolate, Fireburst, Rubbed Vintage Shade and Vintage Sunburst Perimeter. Chocolate and Cherry flavours seem to be the most prevalent though. Hmm, might have to go for an ice-cream now. Cheers, Gary :-)

@@FoxysGuitarShow icecream, great idea. Fireburst perimeter sound like a blast radius. Have gibson gone neuclear? 😁
      All the best

Great guitars...... I bought a handful of them in michigan back in 2015 when we were on tour. They age and wear very nice.

Hi Steve :-) Same pickups as a Studio and a lovely chunky maple neck - what could possibly go wrong? I can't believe that Gibson were popping these out as an entry level guitar. They're a no-disappointment guarantee :-)
