- A bit of fettling has got this old boy up and running and playing very nicely. The Hondo's have an interesting history and anything named after a John Wayne film must be ok.
Surprised how nice it sounds. You’ve set it up wonderfully and the pick ups work great for the guitar.
Hope everything has healed up nicely after your surgery 🙂
Hi Lux and thanks :-) I really enjoyed playing this one and they make for a brilliant budget guitar. As for the surgery, they reckon it'll be about 6 months until I'm fully cooked so I'll probably do a full review of my face after that hahahahaha. Cheers, Gary :-)
Amazing how the old, olive green, raffia cabs sound so classic.
The sculpted feet were a great edition. They lifted the cab off the floor enough to cut out any excessive bass frequencies that the older 'floor standing' version suffered from.
Version 1 came in either pink or light blue.
I always muffle mine with dirty underpants and socks if at home.
The negative side is that when they get too hot they start to emit a nasty odour.
Hahahahahaha, I've not tried using underwear to dampen the sound but I can imagine how that might work!
Hi Gary. It sounds just like all those rather more expensive Les Pauls you've been reviewing. You've done a great job upgrading it. Nice Demo too.
Hi Bob and thanks - I loved the way it turned out. Cheers :-)
Great guitars,I had both of the hondos, never let me down.
Nice to see one again Gary..Sounds great..The brass nut has been put on afterwards bud...And yes it has a proper diamond inlay..Also looks like it has fretless wonders on it gary which wasn't factory..Cheers pal..👏👏👏
Hi David :-) Yes, aftermarket brass nut certainly. I think we used to get those from Mighty Mite as an aftermarket product to increase sustain. Fretless Wonders would make sense because it plays really easily. Cheers, Gary :-)
nice one if set up right this can be very nice guitars i have had one of these hondo guitars for many years, and my wound they sound good super playing sir love it
Hi David and thanks :-) Amazing build for a bolt-on neck - I liked it way more than thought I would. More cheapies coming up this weekend! Cheers, Gary :-)
The same template was used for several les paul type guitars. I had a 70s Ibanez that looked very similar.
Hi Jorge :-) I agree. I think there were many made by the same manufacturer and different logos were put on the headstock for each distributor. Cheers, Gary :-)
I have 10 Hondo's ( acoustic, electric, bass & a mandolin ) they all beat the arse off of a lot of the modern-day guitars. With a good set-up, they play a dream ( Madmalko 👍🏻 he's a top guitar tech & a great guy who's helped me a lot )
Hi Bob :-) Absolutely agreed - Hondo make top instruments. Mad Malko is a genius and still my favourite RUclipsr for a number of reasons. You're right - he really knows his subject and he's a wiring wizard! Cheers, Gary :-)
nice love good LESPAUL inspired guitars such this especially when they have the reasonable price that Gibson sadly lack
love the headstock style and the sound of guitar
It's a great shame that Gibson haven't released a reasonably priced Les Paul for a while now. It's only a matter of time though. I remember when they released the Zoot Suit for $750 - they're now fetching $3500!
To quote my dearly departed father… “Hondo crap-o” 😂
Hi Daniel :-) Your father was clearly a wise man!
Hi Gary, Hondo has been around for ages now. Budget Guitars for People that can afford to play them. Before, maybe taking the Chance on a more affordable guitar. For beginners or people That are just undecided about Speculating.Nicely made and sound good.
Hi Mick, yes, better than blowing a load of cash if you're not sure!
They had Di Marzio pick-ups in them.
Hi Christo :-) Hmm, maybe this one was an exception or (more likely) the DiMarzios had been swapped out. I like these that I've put in though. Cheers, Gary :-)
Hi Gary, nice guitar, if you're on a tight budget then what more do you need. It sounds great and looks lovely. It would be interesting to know what pickups you put in there. It sounds like a Les Paul to me.
Hi Rod :-) I can't remember and didn't look but my gut instinct tells me they won't be Gibson items. If I ever get round to it I'll let you know but it'll be up on eBay soon so I'll need to take a quick look. The headstock on these puts me in mind of the early Encores which had a re-branding as Vintage. I can only guess they're from the same stable. If you like that sound I get then you could do worse than having a look at those little Blackstar ID Core series. I liked it so much that I bought a great big full fat valve job and it suffers by comparison. You can pick the ID's up for very little money. Cheers, Gary :-)
👍🏻👍🏻
Hi 650:-) Can't beat them, eh? The motorcycle vids seem to have made an accidental impact so I might do a couple with my new bike. I won't reveal exactly what it is just yet but it has an awful lot of studs and leather!
For someone doing pub gigs such guitars are ideal. Unless your a gear snob of coarse.
Hi Nigel :-) The thing is that when you're behind a guitar and busy getting on with playing it the label isn't in your focus anyhow. Just play something that feels and sounds good IMO. Cheers, Gary :-)
