  • They went Va banque when they made this thing. Les Paul was a really clever innovator and an astounding guitarist. He invented loads of the tech we take for granted these days. You've got to hand it to Gibson for trying out weird things. I bet they lost a bundle on these.

Hi Gary, This Gibson Les Paul Recordable Model type of guitar 🎸 was quite popular, back in its Hayday and obviously made famous by the Guitar Genius, who was of course was "EL Maestro" Mr Lester William Polsfuss born in June 9th 1915 in Waukesha Wisconsin.
He married Mary Ford, and they both became famous as a Duo. Les Paul went onto design and built one of the world's first electric guitars and also his multi-track echo/ reverse machines. He became an American Pioneer/Inventor. And went on to inspire many young up and Coming Guitar Player's.
This is one of those guitars. I like this example, and it's set up. Nicely to play. But I'm afraid it's far too heavy, and the controls are way too complicated for my tiny brain. Still, it's a fine example. So well done, Gary! Kindest Rgds Mick. P.s. Les Paul was 94 years old.

Hi Mick :-) That's a very nice potted history of Les and his endeavours. Still gigging at 93 - legend! I agree with everything you say, here. Way too heavy for a two hour standing up session and that control panel is brain-melting hahahahaha. I just need a big fat humbucker and a volume control. Cheers, Gary :-)

Lovely instrumental Gary. I wanted one of these when I first saw a photo of Marc Bolan with one in 1972. Some months later Dear Old George Gill had new one in the Tower Music Store window. I was just a schoolboy then, with no hope of buying one, but George was good enough to let me look at it . I think it was about £430 ish back then. I asked him about all the switches to be honest he couldn't explain them, but who could at the time? I did purchase a Boosey & Hawkes Les Paul Goldtop from him later for £25 saving funds up from my 20p an hour Summer job. Fast forward to 2004, and after too many glasses of wine whilst on ebay, I bought a collection of 2 1970's Recordings plus a 1969 Les Paul professional which as you know were all signed by Les Paul. They're are heavy old boys, but are unique and historically important due to the fact it was Les Pauls weapon of choice for most of his latter career. The later reissues in 2014 I think, didn't have the low impedance wound pickups. Cheers, and I look forward to you getting back in the saddle soon.

Hi Bob and thanks :-) I seem to recall you could never clearly see George's face because it was hidden behind a massive plume of cigar smoke! I bought one of these in the 70's for next to nothing. It seemed great at home but when I took it to a rehearsal the lack of power made it unsuitable for realistic live (pub) work. Obviously I wish I'd kept but the Aria Pro ii I bought to replace it was a class act. Cheers, Gary :-)

Very interesting guitar, I've never seen one before. You sure make it sound good. A different topic i would love to see an unboxing video like you did 3 years ago with the 3 Les Paul Studios. That was very enjoyable.

Hi Tom and thanks :-) Ah, I'd love to do another like that but those deals don't crop up very often. As it goes, I've got two brand new guitars on order - I've been waiting nearly 3 years for one of them! Cheers, Gary :-)

Wow nice demo tune Foxy, its got more Gizmo's than a Swiss Army Knife . I guess that model was never intended to be played distorted, as Les Pauls mission was to obtain the cleanest possible sound. But you certainly made it sing.

Hahahaha, hi Chit :-) I reviewed the later iteration of this a year or two ago and it had much hotter pickups. TBH all I really need is a humbucker in the bridge and a volume control (or an 'on and off' switch)! Cheers, Gary:-)

Hi Gary, there's some great vids on youtube of Les Paul's 90th birthday gig where he plays one of these. I don't suppose they were raising too many decibels but the guitar was cutting through the mix just fine and for a 90 year old bloke he certainly still had a few good licks up his sleave. I thought the guitar really came into it's own when you did the clean stuff but in reality that's probably what they were intended for. I'd need a lottery win but if the numbers ever came up then I think I could have a lot of fun with one of these.

Hi Rod :-) There's a strong possibility that Les was playing the later version with the hotter pickups. Les Paul was a fine example to us all. Fancy gigging into your 90's with every 'A List' guitarist straining at the leash to get up on stage with you! You're bang on about the price of them - I suppose you could always sell the other kidney :-) Cheers, Gary :-)

Hi Stoneman and thanks :-) I reviewed a different version of this guitar a year or two ago and although it was a heavy old brute it had the more modern pickups that had proper giggable power whereas this one will require a one million watt amp to heard above a drummer. They can be quite pricey, too! Cheers, Gary :-)

Hi pul :-) As I recall the dealers couldn't shift them because their use was so specific. I picked one up for next to nothing in the 70's and that's what I got back for it when I traded it in against an astonishing Aria Pro ii. Cheers, Gary :-)

I would like to have that bridge pickup in the middle position of my Nashville Tele.

Hi Colonel BustOff :-) Hmm, they don't crop up too often and they're usually pricey when they do. Additionally, you'd have a load of routing to do and you'd need to re-shape your pickguard. However, you've given me food for thought. How about a Gibson NSX (centre pickup from a NightHawk) or a Melody Maker pickup? I reckon it'd slot right in and they're pretty crisp sounding like a Tele. I bet John V would love one of those! Cheers, Gary :-)

I had one. Bought in 1977 second hand. Sold it in 1981 after the birth of my second daughter. Yep the output on it was rather weak, but an amazing guitar. Wish I still had it as it would be worth something nowadays 😉

Hi John :-) I think I had one at around the same time and traded it after my first rehearsal with the band for an Aria Pro ii hahahahaha. You're right about the prices - £3500 seems to be the least you'll pay for one these days. Cheers, Gary :-)

Hi Organic Ape :-) According to Les, he actually designed it himself but I know what you mean about Gibson making wacky guitar gizmos. Les liked designing gizmos though and after all, he invented what he called 'The Log' which was arguably the first solid bodied guitar. - as I recall he invented a prehistoric looper that attached to a guitar and only weighed 200lbs. Cheers, Gary :-)
