  • We've got a few inexpensive guitars coming up over the next few weeks starting with the amazingly competent Gibson Maestro with its cheeky open book headstock!

I’m sure I remember these on sale in Argos of all places, would have been around 2017, which makes a lot of sense.

Hi Dom :-) I'm sure you're on the money here and it rings a bit of a bell. They also had the entry level Squiers in at some point as memory serves. Cheers, Gary :-)

I’ve been playing Gibsons for over 55 years & never heard of these 😵‍💫

Hi Glen :-) The original 2007 series were a collaboration between Gibson and Baldwin. Not much of a collaboration to be fair as Gibson own the Baldwin name. Anyway, they had the bright idea of making some student instruments and to keep the costs down everything was done in China. As it goes, Maestro is historically the name Gibson used on their vibrato systems. The 2017 models don't bear the Baldwin name so strictly speaking it's a Chinese Gibson. Cheers, Gary :-)

Got one 2nd hand from Crack Converters. Replaced the tuners with some Kluson vintage tuners, replaced the bridge with a better one, and dropped in a Gibson P90. Its blinking awesome. Nearly bought one of yours from Ebay Foxy (the 70's Studio from memory), but ended up getting a one year only (till Gibson got cross as they were specced too close to a propper LP)1989 Epi Les Paul (open book headstock, long neck tennon)

Hi Big Dave :-) Hahahahaha, that's funny - Crack Convertors :-) I remember that open book LP from Epiphone and they fetch proper money these days. It was like when Fender let an overseas company make the Squier Pro-Tones and that didn't last long either. Yep, those budget Gibson/Baldwin guitars are ripe for hot-rodding. I've even seen one where a guy actually set the neck into the body! Cheers, Gary :-)

@@FoxysGuitarShow I was seriously thinking about trying to convert it to a set neck but not sure how well it would hold. Just a pity they used maple and alder instead of mahogany

Hi Gary, Thank you for featuring this Maestro Gibson Les Paul Guitar. I wish these guitars were around when I was a kid or in my early teens! What fun you can have by playing one or learning your guitar journey by paying out a few quid on one! Sounds great and plays well! Nice find Gary. A no frills budget, guitar! Cheers Mick 🎉🎸🇬🇧🙏😊

Hi Mick :-) These little fellas are ripe for hot-rodding. I have seen one with the neck set into the body by some brave soul. However, I've also seen them with Seymours in and tuners that would have cost more than the entire guitar! Cheers, Gary :-)

Hi Gary, that's a nice guitar. About a year and a half back I would have jumped on one of these if I'd seen one up for sale. I was after a guitar with a humbucker at the bridge that I wouldn't have to pay a lot for. I usually play my Harley Benton Gold Top type with P90s but sometimes I want something that will cut through the mix sharp as a knife and that guitar would have fit the bill perfectly. I thought it sounded really good, maybe not as fat as a LP junior but in the end what do you expect for that kind of money. I ended up getting a Tiger Stripe ST style guitar with a single humbucker at the bridge. It sounds great but Mrs Reeldin said if I ever went out for one last gig and played that guitar then she wouldn't be there.

Hi Rod :-) hahahahahaha, that's funny about Mrs Reeldin's comment! Ooh, I like a Harley Benton. I think there's been three through the door now and they are superb. Not superb for the money, just superb full stop and really ripe for hot-rodding. I have enormous respect for the HB's :-) Cheers, Gary :-)
