Boxing for mortals: being smart with slips and parries
This is a quick one from a recent class--I see plenty of guys slipping back instead of forward, which gets you nothing but a shot on the nose. Likewise, slipping left then right may be a necessary drill, but in reality it is often better to slip twice left/block and slip left and then roll under (if you are orthodox), as otherwise you may well... catch a shot right to the nose. Yes, this is a lesson for beginners, but I see plenty of guys who maybe have watched too much in the way of Floyd or Ali or whomever and in the end are actually working against themselves in terms of energy and risk. Actually, check out Julio Cezar Chavez if you want to see a guy who 1) slipped going forward to get...

Boots Ennis vs. Karen Chukhadzhian 2--what happened? Boxing analysis from the GOG

Thought I'd weigh in on last weekend's fight. I've seen a great number of analysts say this and that when the reality is that Boots got away from fundamentals, which probably will not be the case if he takes on a bigger name fighter a la Vergil Ortiz Jr. So do I think he was exposed? Not really. These are not easy fixes for a fighter who has developed bad habits, but likely Boots does not reall...

Get right hand pop by turning in the knee (even in the shell!)

Generally speaking, boxers seem to have trouble getting right hand pop out of the shell. Here is a quick tip to help you get that straight right (or left if you are southpaw): don't just turn out your heel, but turn you knee in (and that heel will come out). Feel it from the ball of your foot (lift your big toe up if you are not feeling it), twist the knee in, the hip then you body so your shou...

Hey all here is a quick tip. I see plenty of coaches emphasize pushing off with the back foot, which is fine, but if you push off and lift your body up, you are going to push that jab instead of shoot it. So if you are having trouble getting a crisp jab, try dropping your body (falling into your front foot) when you push off the back foot. (And you don't even have to push, as that drop will get...

    Interesting and insightful points. I used to have a traditional guard but after a left shoulder injury, it is difficult to reliably keep my left hand front falling towards the midline. It takes effort to keep it out ( poor rotation). So I adopted the philly shell defense. I grew up outside of Detroit so hopefully that’s enough 😂. I am lucky to have great mobility (I train this) and work tons and tons of hip rotation daily. I spent a lot of time finding my balance so I am always in a position to punch. I love the right counter, the hidden uppercuts that come out of it too. But like floyd, ( and this is the only like floyd thing about me :), I move into a traditional guard often when weaving, or throwing a lead hook etc.

      The shell can be great--especially as we get older. I fall into it a lot, and actually if you really go way back to the beginnings it arguably started with blue collar guys using it for boxing to stay in shape after work. They didn't have all day to train so the shell became a way to defend without having to have all-star cardio. It's a great system, but if you don't put real time into it, you will get caked now and again. I do think though that a lot of guys develop bad habits with it and therefore lack pop.

    My first glove was the BVG9 and I still use them. I will probably get a new pair. What else can you get for 100 bucks with the quality??

    • @gogboxing5655
      @gogboxing5655 2 месяца назад

      Honestly, my BGV9s have now outlasted everything else I've used, and apart from looking a bit cracked on the outside, they are still great. Really. I have also been using the Geezers Halos that I have up on the site, but I prefer Mexican style, which is why I like the BGV9s. My Geezers are pretty good gloves--the weight is centered differently and they don't have the "crack" on the bag and pads I like, but they are quite good for the price. Good for sparring. Not hard on sparring partners. On the flip side, accidentally hitting an elbow in my Geezers defo hurts my hands more than in Fairtex gloves. At that price I probably would give Pro-Mex a try, but I think to get into a better glove, you just need to pay more. I consider the BGV9 the best value at Fairtex too when it comes to anything velcro. I do really like the fit of their laceups though. One glove I recently briefly tried, which impressed me, at that price point were Leones. I think they've gotten a lot better--the gloves I tried really had a great fit. Some of the low-end gloves that I bought for my students were Everlasts, and they were also better than what they used to be even in the cheap glove range. I might consider them... might, I guess. If I were going to go up into the next price range, however, but below Cletos, for example, I'd probably go with Rival.

    • @wiseworksfitness
      @wiseworksfitness 2 месяца назад

      @@gogboxing5655thanks so much. I have looked at the Rival offerings. Hey get a lot of praise. I might get some more BVG9 and something else a little softer for sparing. I normally don’t wrap my hands when hitting the bag and the BVG9 offers great protection for that while giving a satisfying pop on the bag.

    • @gogboxing5655
      @gogboxing5655 2 месяца назад

      @@wiseworksfitness whoa!!! hey, listen, wrap your hands. Get long wraps (180s) and learn how to wrap your hands properly. Seriously. I always wrap my hands, and I even add padding under the wraps these days. Over time you will develop hand problems if you don't (and it's boxing so you might anyway), but if you develop real pop, you are bound to seriously hurt your hands/dislocate or break a knuckle, etc. if they are not properly wrapped. A dislocation can be worse than a break--I have a friend whose career was ended like that, and the coach back then used to yell at him for wrapping his hands in very sloppy fashion. The first thing I do with students is inspect their wraps---every single lesson. Later in life you will need your hands. Look--I also play guitar semi-professionally, but when I was a young guy I never imagined I would do that. Now my hands are not in great shape, but they still work--but in hindsight I really wish I had paid more attention to wrapping my hands as a teen and in my early 20s. I used to also just wrap them to get my coach off my back. Better to do them right.

    • @wiseworksfitness
      @wiseworksfitness 2 месяца назад

      Thank you so much. I appreciate the advice and it will help others avoid problems later. It’s too late for me 😊! I am actually 55 and spent some years in martial arts where it was customary to hit bare knuckles -so we did. I am very lucky I don’t have any problems with my hands at all. My wrists however took a beating. Luckily those have healed up and feel normal. I first dabbled with Boxing 10-15 years ago and always wrapped at the gym. I really just started back a couple of years ago and the last six months consistently. I don’t train on big or hard heavy bags at all. I almost exclusively use a 45 pound maize bag and it absorbs the punches so well I have not once thought about how my hands feel. It is so compliant that I can hit it bare knuckle with any discomfort at all. It’s pretty soft. I have trained on HARD bags and absolutely those required wraps… Nevertheless, I will heed your advice and start wrapping up!

    I'm putting this in the comments, as it may not be seen easily otherwise: One of my students wanted this to help him remember a padwork combo. It's a simple (in ortho) 1 slip left 5 (uppercut) then STEP and bob under to left followed by a 3-2 then bob under right to a 2-3 (then pivot out with jabs). The reason why it is key is because guys get their feet locked into the mud. This forces you to fire that left uppercut with your weight on your left foot (and it could easily be a Mexican shovel hook to the body) and then still take that step to bob under to come up firing. If you get used to this move (which may seem awkward at first) it will be a first step to opening up inside fighting where you slip, fire uppercuts (and not only) but still move your feet. Also, that move (if you work on pads) teaches you to bob under but come up with a quick left hook to the head--which means keeping that shoulder lose. TIP: I teach a palm down hook. A palm in hook is going to be slow and hard to throw on something like this, but a palm down will be quick and have snap.

      Hi--sorry that I am writing in English (I actually don't have trouble reading Spanish, but I can't remember it well enough to write it). Look, these are much less expensive than Cletos, and IMO Cleto Reyes gloves are simply better. They are my preferred glove (although I don't have a pair right now--wish I did). These are, however, about as good as you are going to get for the money (a little more than 1/3 the price of Cletos) in a Mexican-style, Cleto-esque glove, IMO. They are real leather, have excellent wrist support and I am still using mine (all the time, really) on bags and in sparring. I'm getting old so I'm only doing light to medium sparring now, but they are ok if you are both wearing headgear, IMO. THey offer very good hand protection, and they have outlasted (by far) the Titles I had, which I did like. I have noticed some variation between pairs of gloves (mine fit better than those a friend bought), but that happens with all gloves. I think if you have medium-sized hands and wrists, these are going to be quite good (and they should be ok even for fairly large (but not huge) hands. Not sure I would rec them for small hands and wrists, however. So in the end, they are very good for the money, but no, they are not as good as Cleto Reyes.

      Ah--that's a Master's fairly heavy uppercut bag. You can find that in Europe. I'm not a fan of Master's gloves, but their bags (including speed bag) really last. Look for something that is NOT concrete feeling. You don't want soft either, but something like medium or maybe slightly more than medium, especially for an uppercut bag like that. If it's hard and heavy, you will hurt your hands doing uppercuts, as the bottom of it will just get harder with age. If it's too soft you can sink too deep and sprain your wrists. I'm not a big fan of water bags, as they are unwieldy, crazy heavy and they seem inconsistent from day-to-day to me. Hope that helps a bit.

      Cool. I'm closing in on 60. The big thing is getting warmed up, eating right, getting enough sleep.

      Texas, but in Europe now. I've recently moved to a different city so I'm not (yet) where I can make vids. Currently, I'm bouncing between boxing gyms trying to find somewhere that has good equipment and the right feel.

      I'm getting good pop with them. Would not say better, but very solid construction and my hands feel good in them. I'm big on switching up gloves, as I mentioned in the vid.

      @@user71324 my favorites are still the Fairtex BGV9s. And those have lasted a long time and are still going strong.
