Fixing your balance in boxing: easy points and drills

  • This is a response to subscribers asking about balance/getting better balance or simply feeling awkward during hand pad drills. The points are simple, the drills easy, but you need to practice them every time you work out (usually incorporating the drills into you warm up). For the impatient among you, the points are: 1) keep you chin down 2) don't get your head out past your knee--and here keeping your chin down will automatically help that 3) slip responsibly--and keeping your chin down will also help here 4) do the two-foot jump line drill on uneven ground (outside) 5) do the one-foot side-to-side line drill on uneven ground 6) do the silly spin drill and 7) practice shadow boxing for 15 minute straight while thinking about moving from point to point, practicing box steps, L-steps, pivots, slips, combos, etc..
Have fun, don't get too tight and, yeah, keep your chin down. And HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO YOU ALL!

Thanks! Working to get back in shape still, as that was pre-COVID, so it's hard going, but I appreciate it!

Christopher, I know the feeling, as we've had rain and now freezing temperatures. Combined with lockdowns, there are not many places to work out. Laters.

Keep it up man 👍🏾 great video, I really needed this .. is there anything aside from boxing that could help with balance indirectly like maybe say ballet? Just to get a deeper dive into understanding balance

Lifeof TSK, thanks! Not sure about ballet, but Lomachenko learned how to dance traditional Ukrainian folk dances (which are a bit like combining tap dance and square dance), and I believe even Sugar Ray Leonard got into tap dancing (I thinik). At any rate Joe Louis trained in tap dancing (at least there is an old photo that depicts this), as, apparently, did Sugar Ray Robinson. Re sports, basketball is a great sport for conditioning/side-to-side movement and balance (and you do not want to cross your feet). Mayweather Jr. and Roy Jones Jr. were big into basketball (Jones Jr. to the point that he would play pickup games the day of a fight), but this is quite hard on your knees. But if you work on the drills I showed here (and you can go back to the neck exercise vid the L-step vid and the other vids where I show warm up drills) you will soon feel a difference. I mostly do these to maintain, as I'm almost in my mid-50s, but they are primarily drills I did when I was a kid, and if I can still move at all at my age (with my knees and ankles and achilles) then the proof is in the pudding.

@@gogboxing5655 I appreciate the tips and feedback so much man, living in Atlanta gym access and good coaching is quite limited especially with COVID going on, so I rely on research, film study, and lots of RUclips coaches like yourself. Fun fact to I’m also starting a RUclips channel really soon centering around improving on these skills with lots and lots of sparring. But nonetheless man shout out to you keep doing what you’re doing

@@raasshaaadd697 thanks again. I wish I could get back in the gym myself. I had plans to do hand pad vids, sparring vids, etc., but pretty much everything was derailed so my focus is now what anyone can work on at home. Hopefully, 2021 will bring an end to the plague. Otherwise, stay safe and thanks for watching.
