Jumping rope for boxing--quick ideas and key elements...

  • I find it odd, but I get asked about jump rope routines quite a bit. My first advice is: just do it. My second bit of advice is to warm up (stretching/box steps, etc.) then do three minute rounds with 30 sec or one-minute breaks. So one round with a light jump rope. Then a one-minute break. Then another round with a light rope. Then three minutes of situp variations. Then one more round of light jump rope or a round of shadow boxing--and only then your bag workout or sparring rounds. After you finish those always do one more round with a heavier jump rope and then a bit of stretching to warm down. In another vid I'll show you the critical warm-down exercises to also protect your shoulders.
Now while doing jump rope try to do the following:
    clickety-clacks with your feet
Crossovers (but don't just do one side--always work on your weak side/weak hand)
    side-to sides (as in boxing)
pogos from side to side (two feet together)
boxing stance forward and backs both ortho and soutpaw
    crosses
backwards jump uropes (very, very good for shoulder health--keeps the blood flowing in those little muscles in the rotator cuffs and the backs of the shoulders.)
If any of these moves seem difficult, let me know and maybe I'll do an instructional vid on how to do them. I don't do double jumps--I don't even encourage these with younger guys. They are quite hard on your knees.
I used to do other tricks, but I'll be the first to admit that I have to be a bit careful with my Achilles tendon, but what is very, very important is your rhythm and the clickey-clacks. This will help you move naturally around the ring and not "jump or hop," which is not the goal.
Hang in there... and if I can do these, you can too. Just start slow and work them into all training sessions.

I'll make new vids (real vids) soon, but if you want to work on two things at home that will improve accuracy and timing, believe it or not, you should make sure you do not only the double-ended bag, but the speed bag and jump rope. The speed bag is very, very overlooked.

Remember... clickety-clack (kind of a heel-toe click), plus try to work in these moves into every round. Don't just jump straight up and down on your toes or focus on doubles or triples--that stuff may be fun, but it's really not all that useful.
