Northern Lights over Vancouver
The incredible Northern Lights, or Aurora Borealis, dance over the Vancouver skyline on May 10th, 2024. These are the best northern lights seen in over 20 years, thanks to the geomagnetic storms caused by sunspot region AR13664. The CBC National News even came to my house to do an interview about this amazing event. ruclips.net/video/vtSiaLyTncQ/видео.htmlsi=NYsFjNeEaRJfm4BZ

    Are there issues with mounting the camera and filter wheel "vertically" on the OTA eg does the EAF struggle ?, I have a problem with 3rd axis ballencing and the amount of weight needed . I'm hoping to get all the gear on top similar to yours. ( great video BTW)

    • @Robservatory

      No problem at all. I use a strain wave mount, so balancing is not an issue. On a traditional mount it is best to have the camera facing down to achieve a lower centre of gravity and better balance.

    That's an excellent photo of the IC 1396 nebula with the trunk part. Did you know the HD 206267 star in the middle of IC 1396 is a quintuple, but quadruple visual star system? How's this for an upgrade? I bought a used 150mm f/5 C6-N at a pawn shop for $125 that included a 2x TeleVue Barlow that was worth the money by itself. The primary was scratched from being cleaned with paper towel which are abrasive so I sent the two mirrors in to be recoated to 96% reflectivity on sale for $88 for both, usually the secondary was $30 more. Anyway they did a free measurement of my primary and said it was a good candidate for a refigure that cost another $280 after taxes, but it would come out a guaranteed 1/10th wave and .95 Strehl. I asked my club members if it was a good idea and was Optical Wave Labs a good company. I was told they were slow, but good and if my mirror was a good candidate for the process to go for it. After a month it was done at 1/12th wave and .98 Strehl ratio. I'm an engineer and installed a JMI 2" dual speed focuser a club member sold me cheap and properly helped me install it with a dielectric secondary mirror. I removed the steel sheetmetal vanes that were 1.5mm thick and I replaced them with 0.5mm titanium vanes that were wider for strength with a slight curve to them that looked like a turbine. Curving the vanes and thinning them reduced diffraction spikes by quite a bit, 50% maybe? I put an 1/8th inch thick ring 1" wide around the front and back to reduce flexing, especially the front vanes. I made a round clamp like a scope ring to hold the primary so the 6 threaded 1/4-20 plastic bolts through the external ring hold the mirror along with the clamps. It holds collimation very well and it takes a hard bump to knock it out. My friend used it to take photos of M81, M51 and a tiny 13 magnitude planetary nebula in Cepheus called NGC 7139 at the farthest capability of a 150mm scope. We went out to Bortle two sky about 40 mile out of town at the Spaceport. He absolutely got excited saying it was better than his refractor and faster taking less time. It is better than many refractors central obstruction or not. I did a 90 second exposure of the Pleiades that showed the dust around the star the way I like them with not too dust so as to block the stars. I actually don't like that as it often looks over processed, just my preference. My friend offered me a $1000 for it, I laughed, as it's worth a lot more now and he knows it. I let him use it often anyway. He has produced some beautiful photos.

    Puzzled on the OAG recommendation. For a fast Newt guide stars should never be a problem on a relatively small-prism OAG? Due to the wider field of view and fast focal ratio.

    Great video Rob, exactly the telescope I am thinking of getting (with the HEQ5 Pro). Being a newbie I would like your suggestion on an issue I am facing regarding the camera. I own both a full sensor DSLR Canon EOS (6D) and one with an EPC-S sensor (70D). With the full size sensor it seems I will experience excatly (or very close) to the focal length of the telescope, whereas the EPS-C sensor, I have to multiply the focal length by about 1.6 to get true experienced focal length. It seems that e.g. the Orion nebula and Andromeda Galaxy require quite short focal length. I am considering getting an entry level ZWO camera like the 585MC and based on the true measurement of that sensor, I will experience a focal length way longer than the full format 6D. SO now I am like "by changing the sensor, the same scope can be used for a vriety of objects". So, my question is, what is your suggestion for telescope to get for my first steps in astrophotography and should I get the entry level ZWO camera? It may seem like I can get anything I like, but I dont drink and am divorced, so costs are way lower :D

    • @Robservatory
      @Robservatory 4 месяца назад

      In your situation I would recommend the William Optics Redcat 51 telescope and the ZWO AM3 mount. The Redcat can accommodate your full frame sensor with excellent results all the way to the corners. It will also work with your apsc camera and a smaller sensor astro camera. The 585MC Pro would be a perfect match as well.

      @@Robservatory Very good advice. I did however want to reach further out (I have both a Canon 70D and Canon 6D with good optics out to 200 mm), and would like good shots of the Pacman nebula or Whirlpool Galaxy as examples. Am I reaching too far with limited knowledge (but technical mindset)?

    • @Robservatory
      @Robservatory 3 месяца назад

      @@hobbeeswe7472 To shoot small targets like those you need a very long focal length. I shot the Whirlpool at 2000mm with a 2.7x crop sensor and it turned out well. For the Pacman I shot at 4500mm with an APSC sensor. For small nebulae and galaxies you really want to be at 1500mm and up, otherwise you are doing a ton of cropping.

    What a wonderful presentation! You cover so many topics, all of them important, in this earnest look at the 6 inch Quattro. I'm a fan of newtonians and have owned one or two for many years. If one is a 'visual person' (quite likely if you are attracted to astronomy!) you will quickly understand what to do to collimate your scope. These types of telescopes are the best value if you are looking for light gathering capability and resolution from of an optical instrument.

    So EXACTLY WHY are you abandoning MFT format. (Are you going to work for a billboard company)? Which doesn't make sense since large image printing usually has an intermediary step for grand murals, therefore images from MFT are suitable. So I'm curious, why?

    • @Robservatory
      @Robservatory 4 месяца назад

      Larger, higher resolution images for printing and also to achieve the large format look for filmmaking. There’s no denying full frame is superior. It is larger and more expensive than MFT, but worth the trade off. There’s also the fact that MFT is basically a dead format at this point.
