  • I am moving on from the Micro Four Thirds camera system and selling off all my Panasonic Lumix gear. In this video I am taking a look back at some fond memories and sharing some thoughts on all my MFT gear before I let it go. I love Panasonic Lumix and Micro Four Thirds and I will be sad to let go of this system which has been reliable and helped me so much in my creative career!

    You just convinced me to stick with my M43 setup. I have an S1 that I love, but I just packed my GH5 and a bunch of lenses into a backpack that would have just given me enough room for my S1 and a 24-70 and some batteries. And I just feel like I am an M43 user in my soul. Which is why I got a little choked up at the end of this video. And also why I need to so some soul searching about why a video about a camera system got me choked up.

      I think out cameras become an extension of ourselves, so we can’t help becoming both physically and emotionally attached to them. I am trying to look at my gear as merely tools, but they are much more than that.

    You are a talented photographer, and this was a very well done, objective video. For the work you do, I understand the switch to Sony, but eventually, I suspect you will be back in the m4/3's camp -- it may not happen until your body starts lobbying for lighter, smaller gear. For me, I used 4/3's sensors for all of my digital professional work (wedding, portraits, and corporate events) since the old Olympus E-20 until about a year ago (E-M1 Mkll) when I decided to 'hang up my hat' and start shooting for myself. Wildlife/Birds, Scenic, Nature, and Macro are the areas I enjoy. I now have the Olympus E-M1X, as well as a couple E-M1 Mk1's, and I can say that the long telephoto realm is where Micro Four Thirds will continue to shine -- due to size, weight, and cost of other systems. Enjoy your new Sony gear -- it's impressive stuff.

    • @Robservatory
      @Robservatory  2 года назад +3

      Thanks very much for the kind words! My body already prefers the smaller, lighter gear! I will definitely be back to a smaller system at some point, I have been enjoying shooting film on my Olympus 35SP rangefinder a lot lately, it has a fixed lens, so I don’t bring anything but the camera. It is pretty liberating. I totally agree about the long end, there is nothing in full frame that can compare to MFT’s reach. I haven’t picked up a telephoto lens yet, it is the only piece I haven’t replaced yet. Looking forward to what Panasonic and OM do in the new year, who knows, maybe they will lure me back!

      Thanks, Gary! I looked at going Canon as I still shoot film as well and thought it would be nice to use EF lenses for film, digital photo, and video, but they are definitely too big and are getting a bit dated on the new mirrorless bodies. The RF mount lenses are amazing, but outside of what I wanted to spend. Pretty happy with the Sony gear so far, the size, weight and price are nicely balanced. I have been going out with just one prime lens at a time lately and enjoying not carrying a bag at all. Hopefully travel will be possible again soon, regardless of system I always bring way to much gear wherever I go haha!

    I have a GH4, one of my twins has a GH4, and the other twin has a GH5. We use the 12-35, the 35-100, and I use the 30mm macro for portraits, and to digitize film. It has not been a problem to copy film with it, despite the roughly 2" distance from lens to film. I use the EFH (Essential Film Holder), which does not require much working room between camera and itself. The 30mm has also been great for closeups in filmmaking, especially when working a foot or more from the camera, down to an inch. Despite all the new and wonderful full frame gear out there, I just can't see the expense paying off for what we do. Now, if sports and landscape work were my specialties, that might be a different story.

      Ah yes that's with everything, gear doesn't really matter, it's the idea, technique & know-how that makes the image, knowledge of the gear used if it's very limited is also required to get the best from it, if you know it's limitations and what it does well you got to work in front of the lens to get the desired result. Same as with music.. so many musicians obsess over gear but in the end albums have been recorded with all types of different gear & media throughout the ages and a great player can make any instrument sound good or can make music with things that aren't even instruments.., just like a good producer can get a track down no matter what the tools are.

    I would advise keeping the extra special lenses. I am someone who went from Panasonic MFT to Canon several years ago but a year ago I sold off much of my Canon gear and went back to MFT, and while I bought several new lenses but I was so glad I had those old Pana-Leica lenses.
    Why go back? Well, in many ways MFT is the Bolex of today. I am old enough to have started in film back in 1962. Back then Indioe filmmakers had a love/hate relationship with Bolex, most having started and learned their craft on low budget Bolex-made films. Ultimately their is something special about the smaller system that gives so much because there is magic in working within constraints so going back to the smaller format.
    BTW, agreed, the Leica 12mm f1.4 has much of the same Leica quality as the Noct. The Oly 100-400 is a better choice than the Lumix version because it takes teleconverters and as a result is a brilliant macro lens. I love that Laowa 7.5 f2. I use it a lot. For a fisheye I love the Oly 1.8. Another Oly that is brilliant is the 60 macro, much better than the 30 macro from either brand.
    I got the G9 but are planning to get the GH5 M2 and the set of Sirui anamorphics.
    Sell the 100-300 and 14-140, but keep the Leicas and the 2.8 zooms. There will come a time when you will be glad you kept them. The feature sets and perfect size of Lumix cameras means it is almost inevitable that you will be tempted back into the system. For all its flaws, there is simply something likeable about their cameras.

    • @Robservatory
      @Robservatory  2 года назад +5

      I think you made an amazing comparison between Bolex and MFT, that is exactly correct! I used to joke, otr maybe half joke that I wanted my Nocticron buried with me when I go. I have actually sold all the Leica’s and the zooms now, was sad to part with them, but excited about a new system after so many years. My new Sony cameras are the same size as my old MFT cams and the prime lenses are very small and light. I think they have found the best balance between size and quality. Sadly no format packs as much functionality into their cameras as Lumix does, they are extremely intuitive and have the best menus as well. Hopefully MFT sticks around for a long time!

      I use a set of Sony F/1.8 primes, they are actually pretty small and light! There are no equivalent aperture lenses available on M43 though, at least in depth of field terms. You would need F/0.9 lenses to match that. I also use Tamron F/2.8 zooms which are all compact, affordable and amazing quality. This video is something else, been using Lumix gear for almost 2 years now, and I LOVE my Lumix cameras (G9 and GX85) I think they are the best hybrid affordable system (debating on getting another G9) but lately I've been debating if to move to FF (canon) for photos (video would be still on my Lumix cameras), I feel you could get faster and cheaper lenses for FF than on MFT and for the ISO performance too, I'm debating alot really, and watching this video makes me sort of sad for thinking that I'm not using my gear properly, or not appreciating what I have, so thanks for this eye opener, your shots look AMAZING really ! like between the best I've seen on any sensor and systems, but honestly now I don't know what to think or to do, I would like to know your input on my comment, really appreciate this video and it's strange but I feel sad that someone SO talented is leaving a system I love, but wish you the best on your career and work, and hope that you come back for the GH6 ;)

      @Robservatory  2 года назад +3

      Sorry for the slow reply Andy! Just had a baby and things have been a wild ride. You're in the same boat that I was and it is indeed a tough decision to make. I originally was going to buy a Canon for photos and stick with MFT for video, I really didn't feel like I needed too much of an upgrade from the GH5 in the video department. I ended up going Sony because I got an amazing deal on an A7RII. Sony's bodies and lenses are smaller than Canon, the bodies are actually smaller and lighter than my GH5! I think you are right about the G9, there is no other camera that provides the same value, it is really amazing. I was always a bit mad that the G9 gets firmware updates continually making it better and better and there was nothing for my GH5. At the end of the day you have to ask yourself if you are hitting the limits of your current system. I felt like I was and decided to go back to full frame and the extra dynamic range and bit depth is 100% impactful for me, I could see it on my first day shooting photos. I also notice the benefits of the 42mp sensor vs the GH5's 20mp, my prints look better and I have more options for cropping now. I will definitely be getting an even higher res camera in the future. I think if you are considering going full frame then you are probably looking to step up your quality a bit and that is certainly the way to do it. There are a lot of options in FF nowadays, maybe look at something from Lumix? The S5 is pretty affordable, and I really like their series of F/1.8 prime lenses, they are affordable and are all built at the same size, so they would be amazing for video as well. A Lumix camera would match with your G9 as a second camera nicely.

      The reason I didn’t went with Lumix for FF is that, they’re AWESOME cameras, and I know without a doubt that I would love it, mostly for video, so I wanted to give myself a chance to try some other brand, but we’ll see, If I don’t like it, I could always sell it and try some other FF brand, but anyways, thanks again for taking your time to answer me 🙏🏻

    Enjoyed your video, and agreed very much with your thoughts. I have a G9 and a G90 and love the MFT system. It meets my needs. I have the 42.5 Nocticron and although I don't use it a lot it is magical! Like you, my most used lens is the 14-140 and if I could only have one lens it would be that one. nice video, but can't agree regarding the Panasonic 100-300mm: the picture quality of the Pana 100-300mm is very good, whereas the Leica 100-400mm is even better, as you would expect for about triple the price. And don't forget the weight difference, the Leica is nearly double the weight. Sure, the plastic body of the Pana 100-300mm may not feel as premium as the metal body of the Leica, but it makes the lens lightweight and more shock-resistant when dropping the lens. Lastly, it's not true that the Leica 100-400mm is faster (F4.0-6.3). Actually at 300mm the Pana 100-300mm is slightly faster (F5.6) than the Leica 100-400mm (F5.7). If you get the newer Panasonic 100-300mm II it even comes with weather-sealing. So if you can't afford the premium price for the premium Leica lens, the Panasonic 100-300mm (II) is a great option.

I hope you have success with whatever system you're moving into as well. Cameras are just tools, but the feel of every tool is different, and sometimes, one will just fit the user right. I run two systems now, Olympus and Canon. One is m43rds, and one is 35mm (full-frame). For everyday photography, I prefer using my Olympus gear, and to be honest, I think that I tend to get better photos from the smaller format overall, though not exclusively. I have about 20 cameras covering almost all brands at this point. I still shoot film as well, so I am a bit overloaded with gear, as well as genres and subject matter haha! I’m not certain if I will make more videos focusing on MFT gear in the future, but I definitely will be making loads about photography, filmmaking, printing, and audio. Best wishes to you as well!

    Hi,
    Thanks for the video and a very nice MFT system analysis. And I am actually very thankfull to people like you,leaving MFT system for FF like Sony A1 or Canon R5, We have at least here in Switzerland a huge amount of GH5,OM even BMPCC4K for half the price or even less. Even the lens are really cheap to get. So big thanks to leaver it permitted me coming from professional audio recording to expend my services and start multicam recording of concerts with Pana GH5,5s and BMPCC4K.
    And for me the crop is great because I can have almost middle Telefoto with prime 50mm on GH4,GH5 because my subject are always far away
    I found for my purpose MFT much more suited for vs FF.
    So big thanks for people leaving MFT it makes used lenses and body even cheaper and for people starting it is great news...about FF I don't deny the advantages but for my special needs it is too expensive imho...I hope maybe Blackmagic come out with 8K MFT chip (if you look at the Ursa mini 12k it is probably doable) so it would put life again in the system...because OM and Panasonic have problems to retain people in the system...and are loosing each day people to FF...

      I think MFT is perfect for your needs. The crop factor works so well for telephoto shooting like events and wildlife. I think the GH5 still has a lot of life for video production. I wanted to stay with the format but it seems to be on its way out and I need a system that will continue well into the future, especially on the photography side where MFT is not as strong.

    😎 I literally have all the µ4/3 cameras you had. Recently picked up the GH5II over the E-M1X, it being the true video version of a G9. However, went the M.Zuiko Pro route in regards with glass. I chose their 45mm/1.2 over the Nocticron due to the weather-sealing. It’s a shame I am only discovering your work now. I only really seek out professionals using µ4/3. I find the talent more interesting, and ironically more creative. I believe the format fosters inherently more imagination by nature.
    I sincerely hope you don’t morph into one of those guys that continually rant about “that FF look.” I personally find it nauseating as it is overrated. Talent is not in the format, it is in the person behind the sensor. Format is technically irrelevant…
    Good luck on your future endeavours, I think the µ4/3 community is losing one it’s more creative.perspectives…

      I fully agree about the MFT format fostering creativity. In my case it gave me access to tools that were the right mix of size, price and quality to allow me to shoot photos and videos full time. I’m not going to morph into a full framer or a gear reviewer/marketer. I just upgraded all my gear so I am doing some gear centric content now, but I’d like to move on after that and focus more on the art and technique of making images. I have a bunch of different series planned exploring all aspects of visual storytelling, I just have to stop procrastinating and start recording! I feel like there aren’t really any truly bad cameras today and regardless of what format we use we can create compelling and evocative work. I think you made a great choice with the Oly Pro lenses, they are fast, weather sealed and they have that focus clutch! The GH5II fixed the gh5’s only real flaw with it’s 10bit internal 60p. I would be happy using my GH5 for video for more years to come, I still have it!

    Sony is a safe choice right now. I use Nikon Cameras (apsc and FF Z), and MFT (Oly and Lumix). I don't think it's a good time to switch systems, because I think we'll see some great new mft Cameras in 2022. Yes, the news hasn't been encouraging in recent years, but like everything else these days, I see a lot of hype and a lot of Fakenews. I believe we will see new sensors and new AI and AF technologies. I choose the equipment I will use according to the work, and I think they all have strengths and weaknesses. But it is exactly because of this experience in multiple systems that I can say: the mft system is the most fun and supplies 90% of my needs 90% of the time. If I could make a suggestion, it would be this: don't sell all your lenses yet. I think it's quite possible that you'll come back to the mft system soon. Yes, Sony's are excellent, but so are Nikon Z's, but in my case they're rarely used and only for specific situations. FF Cameras are small these days, but lenses will always be bigger. Much is said about the limitations of smaller sensors, but few talk about the many qualities. What was missing was technological development on the MFT front, but I believe that will change soon. If it doesn't change in 2022, then I'll just keep Nikon Z.

As long as my Sony stuff gets me through the next 5 years I will be happy, I don’t plan on making any changes until then. Switching systems is such a pain!

    So EXACTLY WHY are you abandoning MFT format. (Are you going to work for a billboard company)? Which doesn't make sense since large image printing usually has an intermediary step for grand murals, therefore images from MFT are suitable. So I'm curious, why?

      Larger, higher resolution images for printing and also to achieve the large format look for filmmaking. There’s no denying full frame is superior. It is larger and more expensive than MFT, but worth the trade off. There’s also the fact that MFT is basically a dead format at this point.

      From the sample images you post of your past work, I'm not sure on my 65" TV 4K screen that if you post large format or MFT images, I, (or you), would be able to tell me what images came from what camera. Nikon D810 owner, FUJI XT-1, LUMIX GF1, GX-1 and DC FZ200 owner ..
      Thanks for your reply! 🫠

      Definitely can’t tell on a screen. I have done some very large prints for clients, and the full frame did make a difference. Medium format would have been even better. That Nikon you have has an incredible sensor, about as good as it gets.

    The first three minutes of this video disproves the need to even move to another system. You talk about 5 ft prints in the hospital lobby, and pro results on video work.
    If you need a 60mp camera for some reason, why not just buy one and keep the bulk of your micro4/3 gear? I myself shoot FF and m4/3. If you’re just bored, or whatever, that’s fine, just say so. This video really made no sense, sorry.

      I just did a 16 foot print for the lobby of a $120M skyscraper, and a few other 8 foot prints for the lounges. When you’re doing high end jobs for high end clients you want to deliver the best quality that you can. There are lots of other advantages to bigger sensors than resolution, like dynamic range, tonality, low light etc. This video may not have made sense to you, hopefully that helps you better understand. M43 will never match the output of a larger sensor, whether you need more than M43 or not is up to you and your work. Personally I was ready to level up.

      @@Robservatory print size is not impressive, iPhone billboards are 30ft across. It’s all about viewing distance, subject matter, and resizing software.
      You’re the third “Lumix ambassador” I’ve seen who suddenly NEEDS and “upgrade” to Sony… after years of telling everyone how great micro4/3 is. Hilarious. I guess Sony pays better.🤷🏼‍♂️

      I’ve never met anyone from Sony or received gear or money from them. I still have nothing but love for Lumix, it is a great system that treated me well. I just wanted a system that would grow with me into the future and MFT has stagnated for years, to the point that people think it’s dead. I hope it continues for a long time to come. For print size, I argue against the viewing distance argument. You can’t get up close to a bilboard, so it looks fine, but you can walk right up to one of my large prints and inspect the details, and people do all the time. Especially cityscapes and shots with a lot of small details, and you can absolutely see the difference clearly between formats. Bigger is always better when doing prints.

      @@Robservatory I don’t see the stagnation you’re talking about. Olympus put out the EM1mkiii with high res mode, star AF, and 7 stops of stabilization. Panasonic had the GH5ii, and now we have the OM1 and GH6, plus a few new lenses.
      I really don’t care what you shoot, I hope you enjoy your new gear. I just thought it was weird how seemingly every Lumix ambassador on RUclips drops them and goes to Sony, all in the last 6 months… not Canon, not Nikon, not Fuji… odd.
      I played with the Sony GM 24-70 f2.8 in the store, you’d have to pay me to carry that thing around all day, and then pay my chiropractor bills too. Physics is a bitch.
