  • I quit instagram and all other social media about 6 weeks ago and the results have been almost completely positive. I feel so much more calm and at peace without the constant feed of content and notifications. I wanted to share why I quit and my initial thoughts about leaving social media in case you are also thinking about quitting and going after what is actually important to you. If you take the leap, I wish you good luck and I am here to support you, just send me a message!

    Awesome video bro - Facebook is dead, Instagram is one foot in the grave. You are spot on about the mental health piece, everything is toxic, everything is left or right, there is no middle ground being shared anymore, Twitter is by far the worst platform for this.
    You have set yourself clear and achievable goals, I wish you the best of luck on your journey!

      I agree social media is a emotional graveyard and is responsible for so much unhappiness that this guy is intimating the real danger of corporations attempting social engineering. That should be taboo because it circumvents democracy and smacks of mind control. I left Facebook many years ago after the theft of my mobiles led to gangs invading my privacy and destroying my reputation. Deformation of character was the aim in order to discredit me in the eyes of the police. I think social media should be classified as criminal activity and be banned.

    As I have always been a nobody watching other people's "perfect lives" it wasn't hard to delete social media a while ago. I have to warn people it is a lonely place, though. Specially if you go full "I'll stop touching my phone all the time and actually be present". You'll be there alone because everyone else is on their phones. Not bad, maybe soon it will change as more people decide to do the same.

    It's been 11 months now since I left Facebook! I watched a bunch of videos of other people talking about quitting social media and how their lives had changed for the better. What I learned is that Facebook is truly nothing but a bunch of gossip. We lived in a time where social media didn't exist before and we can all do it again. 🙂

    Rob, your accurate and insightful commentaries in this post were spot on. They are like bullet points to what I have gathered through the years as a social media PR and photojournalist myself who came from the defunct OGs Friendster, Multiply, Flickr and PBase (the last two still surviving) ages before Facebook and IG took over. I have blogs and a RUclips that started out by posting private moments of kid growing up and sending links only to relatives and friends.
    I've been watching several "Quit social media" posts and yours really provided "food for thought" for those with insecurities and dopamine hangovers. You nailed it on the head with what is consuming us all, the need for appreciation and recognition on social platforms that encourage us to create different personas, lifestyles and developing an imposter syndrome that triggers more instability. Mental health issues abound on social media from health advisers to those who unburden themselves with their diagnosis. Helpful, but triggering ("Gasp, familiar symptoms! Could I also be...?").
    I also noticed from comments that you have returned to IG to continue your connection to people that matters. Right now its algorithm forces us to explore feeds from strangers and veer us away from those we know. I don't blame you as I have seen many who deactivate rather than delete, and restore their accounts time and again. While I don't have plans of doing due to being a consultant, I have worked around a self-imposed guidance for my own peace of mind : I post when I want to with things worth sharing and not follow prescribed tight schedules, I don't unburden and rant on platforms (ex: food reviews that suck remain unposted), I stop myself from joining divisive arguments and retorts because of stupid comments, I click report on toxic, random violent, graphic and sexual posts that are harmful to children and society (much like doing a regular coastal cleanup hehe), I click "not interested" and "not recomment channel" to posts I don't want in my feed, and lastly, I unplug on weekends for quality time in real life with family and friends. I stopped worrying about missed calls and reply to them at appropriate times when I am online.
    Congratulations on your baby, another precious milestone for your family. While our daughter grew up around social media (both parents photojournalists, I am also a newspaper columnist), I learned a few things from her. As an introvert artist/animator since 7, she had a following for her beautiful art. But she's steadfast in only sharing what she wants and have deleted viral posts without batting an eyelash (to my dismay). She isn't consumed with likes and followers as much as we do, doesn't want me to post her works and tag her (stagemother alert) and is content with keeping her identity low with an alias as an artist. She is 14 now and like any teen, stays online most of the time discussing games and art with a small community but am now trying to teach her how to detox and stay away regularly to protect her eyesight (plus information overload and fake news).
    This is the first time I had a lot to say on one post. You have triggered good sense in all of us. May your channel grow and prosper. By the way, I am into lunar photography and I love to shoot the moon in all of its phases. I also shoot nature, sunrises, sunsets and rainbows (happy grin) for publications and my blogs, not shown on this channel. Haha.

    • @Robservatory

      Thank you for the thoughtful reply! I am still struggling with my thoughts on social media, but overall my feelings and beliefs remain true to what I shared in the video. I am not really enjoying social media apart from making RUclips videos, which I have difficulty finding time to do. I have rejoined to stay connected, but still find myself going back to my old ways of posting and get left feeling like I'm shouting into the void. I post for the wrong reasons, but feel that I need an outlet to share my creative work. I should probably rewatch my video!
      I really need to remove the outcome from my work, and just do what I like without expecting or hoping for a certain response from the world. It's not that social media upsets me as much as I allow myself to be upset by social media. I know it can be a powerful tool, and I'd like to capitalize on it, but boy does it take a mental toll on us all!
      Hopefully you get some opportunities to get out and shoot and leave the phone alone for a while!
      Best,
      Rob

I remember posting for so long only to get like 10-15 likes per post. When I looked at other’s posts they are new to instagram and get like 30 likes in their first post! What??!?! I left Facebook and spent more time on Instagram. I liked Instagram because people had to post some kind of photo. Like you couldn’t just post a link to a news site or a rage comment. So it cut down on all the tribal stuff that was happening on Facebook. But then once tiktok became popular it was obvious that Instagram wasn’t interested in people catching up with friends and family. It became all ads and suggested posts. So I ditched it and never looked back. Now I’m social media free. It’s a good place to be.

    Hi, first of all great video.
    I have a question about it: A lot of people use Instagram / social media as a replacement for email too. For example I can contact IG people by their email but they will not respond that often. But on IG it's much more likely that they will give feedback and much faster. They are addicted to checking their social media updates, but not their email.
    If I leave IG, then I will lose contact with many people and that's ok, but there are a few where I still want to have contact with. But the annoying thing is that they don't respond on email. Only on social media. What can you advice?

    • @Robservatory
      @Robservatory  Год назад +3

      Hi, thanks very much! You have asked a very good question, one that I find hard to answer actually. I lost contact with a lot of people when I quit and it made me regret deleting all my accounts, I should have just stopped using the apps and left my accounts active so I could contact people. I have since restarted some of my accounts and find myself sucked back into wasting time posting stuff again and getting bombarded with time wasting social media spam once again. I wonder how important these social media connections actually are? Is phone and email not enough? If people aren't replying to email how much should you care? Now that I restarted my accounts I do regret it in some ways, but I know I will also miss connecting with certain people, it is a very difficult decision to make. I know that ultimately I will delete the accounts again to focus on what matters to me, but that is different for everyone and might be a mistake for some people. Good luck!

    • @pascalillustration3650
      @pascalillustration3650 Год назад +1

      @@Robservatory Thank you for your answer. A difficult decision indeed. Social media works as a drug. Addictive and withdrawal symptoms when you quit.
      What bothers me too is that people you spend time with often film without asking and then put it in their stories. When you still are on IG at least you know what they place. We are on a point where Social media also has made that people don't respect privacy of others anymore that much. They see filming others as the new normal while there are laws for it. Maybe this behaviour is also an interesting topic for a video.
