I deleted my Facebook 8 years ago. It was pretty easy. Tik tok and Twitter never appealed to me, thankfully. I just recently decided to walk away from Instagram. Found myself comparing myself too much, wasting time, not being productive. The app just felt unauthentic. Fake people, fake friendships, fake happiness.

Great video! I deleted my final social media platform last month (Instagram). I haven’t been without social media since the MySpace days which was 17 years ago. I keep wondering to myself how different of a person I would be if I had never used social media in the first place all those years ago. Crazy to think about.

I guess we'll never really know - but honestly we're lucky to be in the last generation that will ever know what life before social media was like. So most kids/ people won't have that insight either, which is interesting to think about. Random fact - but my boyfriends uncle is raising his kids in Montreal without the internet. It's so fascinating to me. and these kids are awesome - they're wildly intelligent, critical thinkers, social, confident and just overall great people. Not an ounce of social anxiety.

_"Who tf is this and why do I care?"_
Literally me rn. A year ago, I was addicted to social media. Even Pinterest couldn't escape my need to consume content. I deleted my accounts on Instagram, Tiktok, and Twitter almost a year ago and I'm so much happier now. I've been off Pinterest for a while now but I deleted all the boards that weren't helping my mental health.
I'm rarely on fb but my go to app is RUclips. I love self improvement videos, tarot readings, and music but I had a huge realization recently. I decided to experiment by turning on music on my YT Music app and it was okay until I got annoyed by the constant background music to my tasks of doing things around the house or browsing another app and then *IT HIT ME.* I don't exactly care for music but I'm sucked into this loop of never ending cycle of scrolling if there are people on the screen who either engage with you (as the consumer) or with another person/people in the video/podcast. I figured that I miss social interactions and that conversation within a video even made me feel as if I'm part of the conversation and then I'd go in and give my two cents as if someone actually cared for what I had to say. Me...someone amoungst a thousand, 10,000, or even a million people who comments on a video. No one would even know who I am.
I noticed a shift in apps like Pinterest and Instagram because they're filled with ads now and although I can sorta skip past the ads on Pinterest, it's still a big issue and sometimes I feel like deleting it as well.
Getting down to why we consume what we consume...it sad and eye opening but at least you start working towards a solution.

I’m actually considering some form of Digital minimalism on a more permanent basis. I sometimes go back-and-forth with Instagram and Facebook deleting it for a few months and then being back on it and then realizing that I’m not really in the best with mood and I’m constantly comparing myself to others. I also find that the content that even my friends post is super curated and it seems like everybody’s just doing the same shit. I’m like doesn’t is it get exhausting?! I’m exhausted just looking at it because I feel like I can’t post a photo or a story just looking like my everyday self. You’ve gotta have The right outfit and right hair and the right background and the right lighting…..It’s just all so much.

I agree that I prefer the long form content of RUclips! It’s so much easier to moderate your consumption for that very reason.
I learned something recently; if you delete your RUclips history, you can notice that the RUclips recommendations shift pretty quickly, which keeps your feed fresh and in line with what you’re currently into.

@@HarmonieV so so true! i started streaming and making youtube videos for fun, and it would be cool to make it into a career but so there are so many amazing creators out there, i can't see my content ever taking off haha. even the aspects i enjoy of it don't really make me as happy lately either. like i love gaming and i love making friends, but it doesn't fulfill that creative desire that i've always had! i've recently realised what my true passions and goals are, and it's to be a concept artist / 3d artist for the entertainment industry, so i've been building up my portfolio to start applying. i wanted to do this pre-pandemic but lockdown really made me re-evaluate so much of my life and decisions, and recently i had that fire inside of me re-lit and i've been so excited to learn, grow and create. :o)
little update- haven't made a tiktok/reel since i posted this and i feel so much happier! i decided to finally delete tiktok permanently and i was rewatching your video while downloading my tiktoks and deleting each video. :)
i do make it a habit to cull out who i follow every few months and i always recommend that to people- try to unfollow as many people as you can!

I agree, chris. I realized while i was making this video that for the most part when we download a new app we see it as a non-consequential action... but we don't always realize the hours & days of our lives we're deciding to trade in that moment. 👀 it's kinda crazy, deff worth taking a pause to think about.

Tiktok has this feature whereby you can limit your time on the app, let say you set 30 minutes per day. Whenever you exceed the allocated time, the app will block your tiktok screen. If you really wish to continue, you need to insert code. This feature helps me a lot.

    Grandma from South Africa .
My favourite app is RUclips. I have learned so much from it. I love looking up gardening tips and cooking. It’s kinda nice to just ask myself what shal I type into search today
Facebook is becoming an ugly place. It causes me much anxiety and I guess the only reason I have not left is because I have so much family and friends overseas that it’s good to keep track of. If it wasn’t for Facebook I don’t think I would hear anything much from them
Being an old person and having lived most of my life without social media I don’t think I would be very bothered if it all came crashing down. I do get seriously annoyed at myself for wasting valuable time scrolling through nonsense though
I love all your videos Harmonie. You bring much refreshing to my soul. You are practical, sensible and real. And I soooo loooove Canada, especially Vancouver where I spent 2 years of my life as a little girl. As a Gen Xer I've never TikTok'd and I don't really feel addicted to my phone, but I came to realize I was wasting a lot of my time looking at stuff I can't have for various reasons. It was like a fun wake up call from the distractions of our daily lives. I actually love instagram because I can follow inspiring people, helpful content and other professionals in my work field (I'm a dietetics student). But, I also need to be very selective when following people and, from time to time, unfollow some accounts. I hate facebook and other platforms, for me instagram has everything I need social media wise but I need to be very mindful using it and forget about the ads ahah. But my favourite platform is youtube. Initially I was so intrigued by the idea of dopamine hit and how ppl are unaware of its repercussions. I did go back to insta for a while to realize now that I will prolly never go back to that app again and how much unnecessary info it has.
I loved ur video it was great kudos:)

I've been doing my best to prune addictive behaviors out of my life. The biggest thing is trying to avoid things with "infinite scrolls".
There's a Chrome extension I used called "Undistracted" that blocks RUclips's recommendation algorithms on the right side of the page. It allows me to just watch one or two videos without going down a rabbit hole following a chain of recommendations.
Additionally, it can hide Twitter timelines on my browser, so when I open Twitter, I only see general notifications and DM notifications. This keeps me only checking important things and prevents scrolling.

I have actually developed my own method to minimise the usage of social media in which I use Instagram, Snapchat and RUclips every alternate days . And when I'm not using the other I just log out from that app. Sometimes it's harder to stay focused and we lose track and start those same old habits but I'm trying. And I know I will accomplish my goal. 😄

Would you consider RUclips a form of social media? It seems easily as addictive as other forms of social media. RUclips is like a hybird of a social media and a streaming service like Netflix. It has constant content creation.
Glad you quoted Cal Newport's book. It is excellent and he's been saying all of this for nearly a decade.

I deleted Instagram about 3 days ago. My anxiety and depression was honestly getting out of hand. Wasting my day just watching stories, reels, stalking the ex, among other random people, also feeling the need ( inner obligation almost) to upload and take pics everytime I went out. It was getting out of hand and honestly not healthy. So 3 days in cold turkey, kinda having withdrawl symtoms 🤣 but at the same time I feel more at piece and pointing my attention to more productive things, even if its just the little things.

I’ve found screen limits to be effective for me. My total allotted time across all apps (except YT) is about an hour. I’ve been gradually decreasing this time as well where it’s now to the point where I can kinda check a few times a day just to keep up the world but it also helps me not stay on my phone forever. The screen limits can be overridden, so you have to have some willpower not to override them unless it’s important

I don't have an Instagram, Tiktok, Facebook or anything else account except for RUclips. I communicate with all of my friends on WhatsApp and this works perfectly. But I still have a problem: Even though I probably spend less time on social media than others, I still find myself sometimes 3 hours a day on RUclips. And the problem aren't long videos like yours, it's the shorts. Since RUclips has introduced them I feel like I lose myself to them. It's the exact same as with Instagram and Tiktok. It annoys me so much because it's so hard to escape from. Am I the only one who struggles with this?
But thank you so much for this video, I really enjoyed it!

This is one of the channels that gave me the courage to start my RUclips channel 7 months ago about self development. Now I have 648 subs and > 100 hours of watch time. I know it’s not comparable with others but I’m still proud I started because I’ve been learning so many lessons that I could haven’t learned without getting started in the 1st place.

Deleted Twitter years ago, absolute shit. Never had TikTok, think it's by far the worst platform out there for social media and quite frankly filled with idiots. Deleted Instagram and FB for about 6 months. Was tough the first month but then I realised I'm not any worse off without social media. You realise the irony of social media where it makes people more anti-social. Realised how bad social media is and they're literally designed for you to seek attention and validation, whether it's consciously or subconsciously. I was guilty of it, after I looked back and reflected. Life's better without it, no intention of going back on it, at least for my personal accounts. At most, I'll have a business account if need be.

awesome vid, I have never have Tik Tok, Twitter, nor Facebook. I usually stick to pinterest for inspo, I also have a focus Mode on, where I only have insta as the only app I can't use but you do need to have a strong will to do it but after a week or so you won't really care about going into instagram.
