FX-4CR QRP HF Transceiver - Summits on the Air with SSB
In this video I take the FX-4CR on a 6.5 mile hike into the Woodchute Wilderness of Prescott, AZ. This is my first time using this ham radio and so these are my first impressions. This field op is both a Summits on the Air and Parks on the Air activation. Thanks to Mitch NK3H for lending me this radio.

    What a nice location for a walk. Well done on the activation even though it looked frustrating for you at times. The FX-4CR looks a nice bit of kit. We have Ladybirds here in the UK but I've never seen so many close together. All the best Charlie and keep up the good work. 73 Chris M0RSF

    Make sure the firmware is up to date. Mine was a hot mess on CW with the older firmware. Just a note, firmware updates on this thing are not for the faint of heart lol. You have to hold down the F button the entire time it's flashing. If you let go...........yeah, I don't really want to know what happens if you let go. My guess is you end up with an expensive aluminum brick.

    24:47 I recall Evan, K2EJT had mentioned that being an issue on the fx4cr during one of his activations. Not sure if that was fixed in a firmware update though. (I haven't operated mine enough to see if they fixed that or not)

    How well does the CFT1 tolerate high SWR. Am I going to blow the finals with an SWR of 3 on 17m? Same question, but could I use an autotuner (T1) and not risk the finals?

    • @JonathanKayne
      @JonathanKayne 9 дней назад

      In our testing, the CFT1 handles high SWR extremely well. The advantage of using IRF510 in the finals is that they are incredibly overkill for QRP, so bad SWR isn't gonna be a problem. I also included over current protection so by the time the finals would be in danger the PTC fuse would have kicked in ages ago.

    • @e4949
      @e4949 9 дней назад

      @@JonathanKayne Excellent. This gives the CFT1 a significant advantage over the QMX for both input voltage range and SWR tolerance. Add a 9:1 random wire and a T1 tuner for a perfect POTA kit.
