It's useful to label the cord near the plug. You can get cable ties that have a flat label space. I picked up a bunch surplus a while back. I also label wall warts for what they go to.
The originating purpose behind the hole in the prongs is to aid in the manufacturing of the assembly. It has no other "official" purpose. However, some device manufacturers, as well as end-users have created uses for them. I use small hood pins to lockout plugs.
