- In this video I take the FX-4CR on a 6.5 mile hike into the Woodchute Wilderness of Prescott, AZ. This is my first time using this ham radio and so these are my first impressions. This field op is both a Summits on the Air and Parks on the Air activation. Thanks to Mitch NK3H for lending me this radio.

I love my FX-4CR radio!!!! Been using it all of the time since I got it last year. And that station from VA was just following you. How annoying. HA! I’ve had to bump up my power from 5W up to 20W recently with this little radio, but it does work great at 5W. 73!
Awesome activation…. I went to college at Embry-Riddle in Prescott back in the mid 90s. I sure miss it there. I did a lot of hiking and off roading. Next time you head up to Prescott, stop by the Prescott Brewing Company and have a pint of Liquid Amber. 73 Bill. KC2KNA
Great school! I'll check out the water hole. Thanks!
Red, the music on the beautiful hike in made me want to crawl into canvas wall tent and take a nap. What a great place!
Great to hear from you Dick. Thanks for your feedback and support. Take care. I gotta get an in person meet with you sometime
Yes I must agree, the music is lovely, did wonder if you had to carry Bear spray up there on the top, a problem we don't have in UK, nice clear audio from that radio, thanks for sharing Mike G7POG
It was a bit remote so yeah, I was slightly worried. I didn't take bear spray but did have a little extra something for protection. I actually saw one person on the trail on my return hike so there were people around. Thanks, Mike.
I love my FX-4CR and just yesterday a friend and myself actived park US-3873.
I really like this radio too
Nice job. I'm hoping to try out that radio sometime.
Great Video and beautiful country. It makes me want to get out on a summit.
thank you for visiting the channel. hope you enjoy some time in the out doors soon!
I bought a used FX-4CR at the beginning of June and have been having a blast with it for POTA hunting and Activating! N7BBQ
Nice - I really do like this radio. I had my doubts but it's great. Thanks
Good morning charlie 73 great job 👍
Thanks 👍
What a nice location for a walk. Well done on the activation even though it looked frustrating for you at times. The FX-4CR looks a nice bit of kit. We have Ladybirds here in the UK but I've never seen so many close together. All the best Charlie and keep up the good work. 73 Chris M0RSF
Thanks Chris - nice to hear from you!
Great ! 73 de DD6FM - Marco
Thank you Marco
Thanks for the video Charlie! Got to the end of this video that had 40 views but only 8 👍🏻… unfortunately
Thanks for the support!
Great video Charlie! Looks like FX-4CR worked well for you.

Thank you Bob. Liking it so far!
24:47 I recall Evan, K2EJT had mentioned that being an issue on the fx4cr during one of his activations. Not sure if that was fixed in a firmware update though. (I haven't operated mine enough to see if they fixed that or not)
oh cool! you have one huh? I think that firmware is the answer. Somebody else left a comment indicating so. Thanks Jonathan. I'll be dropping the QSL card in mail tomorrow.
Make sure the firmware is up to date. Mine was a hot mess on CW with the older firmware. Just a note, firmware updates on this thing are not for the faint of heart lol. You have to hold down the F button the entire time it's flashing. If you let go...........yeah, I don't really want to know what happens if you let go. My guess is you end up with an expensive aluminum brick.
I really appreciate the info. It answers the question for me. Since it is a barrowed radio, I think I'll let the owner update the firmware - haha
Nice job Charlie! What do you think of the FX-4CR for CW?
Thanks Joe - I wish I could say definitively how I feel but can't. This particular radio occasionally locks up and sends a solid tone while sending Morse code. I have learned that this issue is resolved with the latest firmware, but this is a loaner radio, and I am not willing to risk making it a brick by loading the firmware improperly. When it doesn't lock up it performs very well.
@@RedSummitRF It’s definitely the firmware. Too bad it’s a loaner. It’s quite usable at versions 1.6 and 1.7. I think there is a tremendous amount of potential there for that rig if the firmware gets some love. I have a quick video of me hunting a couple of POTA stations with it on my channel using version 1.7 and it works pretty well. Thanks for your content btw. Great channel. I used your hack for the American morse mini-b single lever paddle and it works like a charm! TU ES VY 73
Did you get this from Yu or from one of the other sellers? Great video!
I barrowed it from a friend and I am not sure where he purchased it. He actually has two. I'll try to remember to ask him and post the answer here.
Manual says 20 watts
Yup, my mistake.
