- I hiked to the top of Apache Peak in New River, Arizona. I brought along some borrowed gear to test on this Summits on the Air activation. This adventure had some ups and downs, but was a success. Using the Penntek TR-35 Transceiver and BeeTenna VHF Antenna was a great experience.

Man, that was one heck of a hike up to Apache Peak! It was amazing how fast the BeeTenna sets up. I really like the looks and performance of the Penntek transceivers. 73, Patrick KF4LMZ

Glad to see another TR-35 out there, I have run into very few of them and have to get mine out whenever I use my TR-45L Skinny several times. I broke my bnc connector off in a freak fall accident & John WA3RNC fixed it for free when I didn't have my other Penntek's yet. If my health allows a SOTA activation this summer I know it will be my TR-35 I take! I have about 5-6 Tuna TT2 tx's working with the 700mw mods so plan some POTA activations with them too. I wish for a 17M-10M TR-36 too, but no luck asking so far! Cheers, Davey --KU9L

@@RedSummitRF I built a Super Tuna ][+ last summer, but have not figured out what I did wrong during assembly. I have ordered another and will build it in stages to compare voltage measurements with the two as I go. The ST will output 2+ Watts on 80-20M and has a bonus 10M band module that should do enough for the band to open I think. The VXO on it allows for about 3 kHz of roaming around the crystal freq which could be a real POTA machine for special events, etc. See you at the Buildathon #2.
Love the video. I am new to CW and strongly considering the TR-35 as my CW rig. Glad to see the positive feedback. I also love watching your videos as a newbie. The tickers showing the code really are a help for me to be able to see if I was able to decode the contacts accurately. Thanks for the great content.
I enjoy using its predecessor, the TR-25. I use a tuned 20m antenna. With this I don’t feel a need for an SWR meter. Good luck with your search. Vy 73 de David AE4LH
@@o2bnov0307 Thanks for the feedback! I ended up purchasing a QMX. I did order it assembled and I am number 645 on the list, ouch. The still want to the TR-35, just because these Pennteks seem to be such great, yet simple radios. Now that WA3RNC is retiring and he is only selling what is left in stock, a person may struggle trying to get on later. TU es 73

So excited to see my antenna on a peak! I’m going to be doing some SOTA here in Colorado in April and will do my best to video it. If it comes out decent I’ll share it. It will involve some horseback as well.
That sounds Amazing! I wish I still had a horse. I've rarely ridden since leaving the farm in Wyoming. I hope your video turns out. I'd like to see the adventure.
Something to note about the paddle modification. I have the same paddle and I made this modification when I got it a year or so ago. The set screw that you replace the adjustment screw with is the same one that's already used in the paddle to lock in the adjustment. So if you have the Allen wrench that comes with it it works for both. I'm not sure why this doesn't come from the factory like this.
Once modified it's a fantastic paddle.

That's an interesting/challenging hike compared to many in the Phoenix area... I deeply regretted wearing shorts and picked up a whole bunch of cholla on my legs during my activation 😂 Too bad I missed you up there!
haha I have made that same mistake several times. I love the shorts but now only wear them on well traveled trails. I would have loved to have worked you up there. Completes are hard to come by (maybe you already have that, though). The info you posted on the site was helpful. Did you park the same place as me, or down south further where your tracks start?
@@RedSummitRF I do have this one as a complete! I did park near your spot and started tracking when I found a gate, but later found it leads into private property so your route is basically the best
The TR-45L Skinny has an SWR indicator if it is above 2:1, a big afterthought for the TR-35 no doubt. Both put out more than 5 watts though and I have to turn the power down to 5-6 watts to avoid overheating issues on battery testing experiments with a dummy load.
Interesting. It would be cool to try operating with the TR-45L Skinny sometime. I mean, I wasn't overstating that this radio has everything I need in a convenient format minus the meter. I like simplicity, but it's ok. I have a fix with those inline meters. It's really nice! I didn't realize they put out more than 5 watts.
@@RedSummitRF Yes, I've had to turn the power down on 80M because something was overheating and the display and meter backlighting started fading and surging. I turned it down to five watts and everything was fine. I think 5-7 watts is okay, but that 10+ watts setting was above the original design I think.

Thank you Ian - I was watching for them on the way down, but wasn't expecting to find them. Turns out, they were on the floorboard of the truck. I switched out hats from the backpack in the backseat of the truck I guess. - whew.
Pretty neat little yagi, the AM station coming threw is great. I'm glad you found the batteries as well. Question, I grew up in a desert area with the Pacific diamond back rattlesnake and hiking and playing in the hills. we never wore any snake gatorz, do you guys wear gators to protect your calves from snake bites?
I only encounter a rattlesnake about every 2-3 years. In all my time hiking, only once did I get close enough to cause alarm. I just try to be noisy and keep my ears open. No snake gaters.
I would love to see a comparison between this radio and the KX2 and KH1.
I am going to put that on my list of potential videos. Thanks! I have used both of those radios. The KX2 is much more feature-rich. But I think a comparison video would be fun.

What a nice radio! Tell me, how do you synchronize the sound from the recorder with what's happening on the video? Manually?
That's right. I set up the cameras and turn them on, then when I'm ready I turn on the recorder and clap a few times when using the lapel recorder. With the Morse code paddle same thing except I hold up the paddle and slowly tap it several times in view of the camera. Then manual alinement is pretty easy. Thanks!
