- I hiked to the top of Black Mountain near Wickenburg, Arizona. I brought along some borrowed gear to test on this Summits on the Air activation. This was my 3rd time using the Penntek TR-35 Transceiver and BeeTenna VHF Antenna. Both are excellent products that made this activation a success.

Great video and activation, Charlie! Glad you like the TR-35. I think it's a fun and capable little radio. Like you, I love the simple controls. One note: John (WA3RNC) recently announced that he's retiring, so he's selling off his remaining stock. If interested, now would be the time to purchase. :) That's not an easy decision to make, though, pre-Hamvention (when extra radio bucks come in handy!). Cheers, Thomas (K4SWL)
I just ordered my TR-35 to add to my arsenal of CW QRP rigs . Also I recently built the American 🇺🇸 Morse mini -b key kit . I actually like the key a lot . I am able to grab the key in my fist without setting off dits and Dahs. Great video !
Good to see you out and about red. Haven’t seen you spotted in a while
Great video and review. I echo what Thomas said below. WA3RNC is retiring and these will becoming unobtainium after he sells the last of his stock. I was going to pull the trigger and get one, but went with the QMX instead. Not sure why other than it is about a 1/3 of the price and Thomas gave it a good review. Plus with Hamvention right around the corner, the extra cash will come in handy.
Hey Charlie. That’s a nice little radio. Maybe once I get CW tackled. Great SOTA activation. 73!
Thanks. I hear they won't be around much longer. I'm torn as to whether to buy new right now or used, later.
Like the new intro
I'm looking at the PennTek TR-35 myself. Thanks for the review.
Yup - I need to hop on that purchase myself before the business closes.
Man, you earned that summit! That looked like a brutal hike. Great review of the Penntek TR-35. I like it! 73, Patrick KF4LMZ
Definitely a goal for me to Qrp, and CW

Like the way you attacked that rocky beast and some nice growth on the summit too looks like its had a good rain recently. Cheers Mate vk5cz ..
Great video. Love the background music
Thank you for swinging by Heather!
thank you
Totally agree - i think the screen is the biggest downside for SOTA, which is why i sold mine. I was also surprised that it was about the same vilume as a KX2 - i thought it was smaller until i actually received it in the mail. Otherwise it is a cool radio.
I like the design of TR-35 , because it use crystal ladder filter , setad of phasing method, I think crystal filter give better near band rejection for CW. AG6JU
Maybe do some comparison tests with VSWR meters as I find my dear old 817 has a very forgiving meter compared to other rigs/meters. My Analyzer shows a vswr reading on an antenna but the 817 says ZERO no swr here to worry about and loads up fine.
