HF Ham Radio Long Wire Antenna Lift using Remote Control Quad!
Thanks for the _top notch_ video, gonna have to build one for my G90! You shared your tips and tricks so I'll share one of mine. I see your "solder smoke fan"... I found some solder fume filters on Amazon ("KOTTO 5 Pack Set 0.4 Inch Activated Carbon Filter for Solder Smoke") then grab a 120mm pc case fan which are 12v and duct tape a square of filter material to the fan shroud along all four sides, so it seals all the way round and only draws through the filter. Then all you need is an old 5v USB phone charger (not like we don't _ALL_ have like _10 of those_ laying around right!?😅) and wire that to the fan. There's two common styles of PC fans which have either 3 or 4 pole wiring, one pin is ground and the 2-3 other + wires vary your speed selection and even on 5v @40% voltage they'll draw fumes just fine. If you do a tidy enough job taping the filter on you can free-stand it up on end right behind your soldering work and not have to suck those neurotoxins!👍
Hi Stephen, So this does SwrToAir tx on 144, even if it supports only upto 55 mhz?
I bought two units from Amazon, BOTH were DOA. I am using a transformer 110 volt AC to output DC 14.5 @ 1.5 amps to provide power thru a two trigger relay that supplies input power to the DROK Buck Converter. Is this frying the Volt Adjustment?? The documentation says: "Note: please dont adjust voltage during short circuit" When I first switched it on, the Amp display showed 0.01 am draw to a test bulb. Then when I turned the Adj-V, it went to Zero. Output from the DROK converter is staying the same as the input voltage. I guess the Feds Postal Inspector fried another of my electronics. I got to get off the LIST!
Also, when I go to adjust the Current Calibration, by power off the unit, then holding down the ENT, the power it back on. The Current Calibration buttons "SET & ENT" is Not changing the current "Amps"! This is frustrating as heck!!
For anyone using Linux or Windows or want to use another program than Quicktime on MacOs you can use VLC media player following these steps: Install VLC. Open it - click on file - click on Open capture device and a window will appear. make sure Video is toggled on. Then in the drop down menu where it says "FaceTime Camera" click on it and chose your fpv camera. then click open and a window with the stream from the camera should come up. For recording you just go under the Playback drop down menu and just click on capture. I had some issues with it not saving unless I stopped the video by going to the Playback dropdown menu and clicking on stop as supposed to clicking on the stop Icon. Your recordings will be saved under my videos in VLC. Good luck.
can power pi 5 which req 5v 5a through this. and is it supply 5amp constant?
This Just happened to me on Labor Day!!! I was left in the same condition. Lesson learned.
Just printed this out and going to give it a try and do a video on it myself. Thank you for the stl file. I normally mess around with mag loop antennas but love verticals.
Thank you for sharing. I also have the Yaesu FT-991A and the MFJ turner that you used on the FT-891. Have you ever used that turner on your FT-991A? I am thinking about getting the FT-891. Thank you.
On the website it looks like the software is for Mac only. Ooops. At least this gets me thinking about equalizer software, which i can maybe find someplace else.
WOOW, Its So Cool To have Money ! You Can Buy And Build Stuff By Yourself,. Crazy !
At last a decent video. Thanks
Don't you need a 4:1 balun for the vertical antenna? 73
This is very interesting. I am in the market for a SWR meter. Stephen, does this one cover all the HF bands? I see that DX Engineering has this on sale right now. I think I like it. The air feature is a good plus. Thank you for sharing Stephen.
Nice interesting video, thank you. Ofcourse the Buddipole is a shortened antenna, too low mounted. A full dipole is dirt cheap, and works great. But somewhat unpractical. 73 PA5BAS
What kind of motor do u recommend? I bought it as kit and I should buy motor too I’d rather sunnysky brand but don’t know which one is the best for this airplane
How can u compare a vertical antenna with a horizontal dipole that's a pretty stupid comparison
Hey Jim thanks for watching. I’m sure it was an easy prediction by any experienced HF user like you, but for those just getting into the hobby - any comparison to watch is valuable. Cheers!
How did you go about mounting your antenna and routing your coax? Is it safe to route the coax parallel with your power? Did you consider installing the base unit under a seat or inside your center console? Where do you hang your mic? I have nearly the exact same truck and I’m looking to install my FTM500 in it much the same way you did.
Thanks for the video. I do a lot of POTA and these will be helpful when several operators work close to each others.
It didn't work. It does now. A wiser man would have tested at each step to see what the issue was, but a wiser man was not available. Thanks a bunch de KK7BV.
Looks just like my voltiguer except for the decals
6:03 - Meow!
Your Videos Are lways Inspiring And VALUEBLE TO WATCH AND LEARN. :) I Wish I Could Do This Project, Make This Filter :( I Get Super Good Signals , But The Noise Is Just CRAZY ! I Cant Afford To Buy All These STuff And Even When I Tried To Substitute, Did NotW ork :(
BTW I have MANY , PLENTY Of Radio Components From USSR/Soviet Times, SUrplus, If You Want Anything, Let me Know :)
Seems like a lot of “other” equipment is also needed to verify the antenna settings with the tuner? Too many steps for my taste. While I like the idea of a manual tuner, the autos seem to be a lot faster and more accurate. Maybe a manual tuner with the appropriate meters built in would be easier to visualize the settings vs hoping back and forth with several pieces of equipment? Just my opinion 🤷♂️
have this tuner and I was wondering what how the readings would change impedance wise after tuning up if you just changed the center control?just out of curiosity?
The Buddistick is unlikely to ever perform as well as full size dipole as more wire almost always equals better signal. It would be closer if the Buddistick was at the same elevation. I think the takeaway is if you can use a full size antenna it pays. If you can’t well the Buddistick and Buddipole can be setup in under 10 minutes and do a pretty good job for the ease of use. Thanks for taking the time to make the video.
You get 100 watts out from the 8Ah battery?
Having trouble with my DaVinci Resolve Speed Editor keyboard. It's not responding during editing sessions despite being fully charged and recognized by my computer. Indicator lights aren't working either. Tried on different computers and reinstalled the software, but no luck. Any suggestions?
Appreciate you explaining these settings. I just ordered a 991a. I never used FT8 realize there is more to learn. 73 Steve AA4SH

I loved the quick and concise showing of how to use the Rig Expert. I'm picking one up today. Thank you for not taking me 'out into the weeds" with your explanation. I'm new to HF and everything is fun and interesting.
Thank Stephan boy wish I had Rig Expert AA-55 zoom 20 years ago when I homebrewed my current muitiband antenna. Next week my Xiegu 90 should be delivered. I’m planning to home brew a EFHW Antenna to use to begin POTA/SOTA Operations later this year. Appreciate your sharing your insights and demonstrating how simple tuning antenna could be with the new technologies. 73 Steve AA4SH
Thanks for sharing your experience and demonstrating this functionality. Years ago I used a MFJ-259 which was more effort compared to the Rig Expert AA 55 Zoom 73 Steve AA4SH
helps to have nice tall trees close enough to string a dipole. Otherwise we are at the mercy of what we can do and what we have
That plane appears to be just a different color Voltiguer.
Great video. I would build it like a U not a I as shown
Nice, didn’t know it could do that.
Looked like you setup a buddistick vertical. Im not an antenna genius, but you have a horizontal dipole 30' off the ground vs a vertical whip on the ground. Did you use a counterpoise? Of course there is an s9 vs s3 on a tuned horizontal dipole vs a vertical mobile. This is an absurd comparison, waste of 2 min.
How do you get the waterfall in WSJTx to be able to see all signals coming in. I had a call from one that the waterfall said was down at freq 465. I do not see signals there. That pasrt and a good 3/4 of that waterfall is blak. Only a few signals show up. Everything esl is fine can make and receive contacts but don't see signals at all in the black areas. Have tried all adjustments with the software/waterfall including advanced and it only moves the blue with the yellow signals in a small portion of the waterfall. Any help appreciated.
Thnak you.
This is such an unfair comparison. Each antenna has its purpose. The dipole is going to take much longer in the field to erect, is going to require a lot more equipment, having 3 spots to hang the center and the ends, and can be difficult to get up 33’ in the air, let alone evenly. The BuddiStick is designed for quick deployment and is a shortened vertical, of course it’s going to be down 36db from a resonant tuned dipole. Other than that it’s a great video and thanks for it.
you have Very Good Videos , Hope you are in Good Health , would you consider a Video on Used Mic Mixers , they are a lot cheaper lol . Yes many new rigs have decent built in mixers or Equalizers . TNX from W5HEH, AJ
This is exactly the information I was looking for, so cool to use the nano vna to check what the box was giving in terms of swr and rl. Thank you
Hello, I need your support. I use an FT 991A and do WSJT-X via HAM Radio Deluxe. I set up the connection properly and the sound card also works. I control PTT via RTS. My problem is that when I go on air the MODE switches from D-USB to USB by itself. What could this be and do you have a solution? THX
Exactly same issue for me. When WSJT-X keys my rig it switches mode from D-USB to USB and I get zero power out. Have you figured out what's wrong?
Your next vid needs to be FT991 on 60m and TX'ing via WSJTx on FT8/4. I cannot WSJT on 60m.
I agree with another comment down. The approach of showing the diagram updated live as you're building the circuit was super cool. Overall the production value in this video is staggering. Awesome work! I've been looking at the ARRL article you reference for a while coming up with a game plan to build the three pole version. Your presentation and method is so much more accessible, I'll be shamelessly copying your work here.
Wow lots of critics. I have a buddistick pro, and I appreciated the video content for what it was. And it’s a high quality video for all that you got across.
12 volts is a standard ref for voltage. Your device will run more efficiently on 12.8 to 14.8 but check the device for voltage requirement. Thanks. I had one unit DOA and the other ok.
You really should learn how to tune your antennas before making videos and statements that aren't necessarily true. If you're using a RigExpert stick, it should be no problem getting the SWR down to around 1:1.2 1/2 wave dipoles, at 1/2 wave high, will always have better results than any compromised antenna systems. No shock there!
Thank you for taking the time and sharing
