Thanks so much !! I got my Yaesu tangled up and started getting all sorts of errors....I went back to your tutorial step by step and all is well. Awesome work sir !!
I don't chime into forums much, but do look for solutions here. I had an issue of the CAT working and radio keying, but no audio output the radio. After a little while laying out exactly what was happening, knowing I was generating audio in the soundcard internally, I finally found one person in another forum who had my solution. Of all of the RUclips videos on doing FT-8 on the FT-991a that provided settings, none mentioned one crucial setting. In my case, it was setting 106, SSB mic select. That setting needed to be switched from MIC to rear. My CAT was always working, but no audio output. That setting fixed it all, so after changing cables and many other things, that was the simple solution. Hope this helps someone.
Excellent reply Russ. So many dang settings. I love the fact that I can just use the CAT cable with the 991 which also carries the audio vs my 891 where I have to run 3 cables with my Mac
Hey Dean, thanks for stopping by. What a great radio! My experience with WSJT-X is mostly good but I find I often have to reboot the computer to get a good connection with the radio. Certainly not the radio's fault. Good luck and let me know if you have any questions. 73, de W0KNI.
I was having trouble receiving anything. So I set everything to your settings except for the baud rate as mine was unchangeable at 4800 in my software settings. Also thanks for clarifying that with the USB cable you don't need an audio cable. I receiving now! Thanks! Now I have to learn the rest on the wsjt-x software👍
Thank you for sharing. I also have the Yaesu FT-991A and the MFJ turner that you used on the FT-891. Have you ever used that turner on your FT-991A? I am thinking about getting the FT-891. Thank you.
Thanks for watching Dan. You are exactly right. I think manufacturers could really benefit by including simple “how to’s”, like setting up for FT8. Cheers. W0KNI
How do you get the waterfall in WSJTx to be able to see all signals coming in. I had a call from one that the waterfall said was down at freq 465. I do not see signals there. That pasrt and a good 3/4 of that waterfall is blak. Only a few signals show up. Everything esl is fine can make and receive contacts but don't see signals at all in the black areas. Have tried all adjustments with the software/waterfall including advanced and it only moves the blue with the yellow signals in a small portion of the waterfall. Any help appreciated.
Great tutorial, found a bit of a NEW one for me. I also run a mac, and latest version 2.4.0 of WSJT-X the FT991 is bouncing itself from DT-U to USB. First time I've even seen that, any thought's or seen this before?
Hey Scott, thanks for stopping by. Wow, I have not however I do run into glitches with this combo and think the best thing to do is to turn everything off. Reboot the mac, then turn on the radio, then start WSJT. I've noticed that WSJT will not release the USB Device port and I have to ping another one, or better - just reboot and start over. Let me know what you came up with! 73, W0KNI
Hello, have you found a solution to the DT-USB and USB problem? I have the same problem and I haven't found the solution. If you had found a solution, I would take it. Thanks in advance . My 73's QRO ON4LME
Hey Claude, sorry for the long delay. I've been searching around for an answer and the best I can come up with is it's probably the software and not the radio that's causing the mode to change. I hope that helps. 73. w0kni
Thanks! I was planning on picking up a FT897d for a few years and then Yaesu stopped production on them! The FT-991 doesn't look as durable but it supports both C4FM and you can play with FT8? Its about damn time Yaesu! I am going to finally upgrade my license though. Thanks for confirm the FT8 ability though!
NOW.... Save ALL of the FT8 Settings onto your SD Card... Also for each mode you like to do on your radio, set up that mode and save it onto the SD card. This makes it easy to enjoy whatever mode you want to work whenever you want. Just load the Mode memory from your SD card any time you want to work FT8 or SSB or CW. That way you don't have to fiddle with all of the settings and it will be easier to get on the air.
WHOA - I totally forgot this guy had an SD slot - LOL. THANKS FOR the AWESOME tip. That is probably my number 1 beef with the different digital mode software, always having to tweak the rig to make it work. I don't run digital often, at least not enough to remember EVERY setting ... Great tip Mr. Ghost!
@@robcarnaroli269 I can't find an SD slot on my 991A, but I do have the RT-Systems programming software. It accomplishes the same thing as long as you have a PC available. Jim N4FAF
could you go over how to set the audio levels between the computer and the FT991a? I can't seem to figure out how the ALC works and there's no easy way to monitor the outgoing audio for distortion, etc. thanks!
Hi Steve! (great name btw) - help with audio levels? Sure thing - and that "sounds" like a fun video to make! I'll summarize and answer here, but stay tuned for a video explanation. The 991A only requires a USB-A/B cable. This cable should have ferrites on both sides. What works best for me to make the "magic" happen is to: 1. Turn the radio on, unplugged from computer. 2. Reboot computer (I prefer to cold boot, aka shutoff then on) 3. Plug in your USB cable from radio after computer has settled down and loaded the startup software. 4. Open your software and go to the Radio and Audio settings. 5. In the Radio settings make sure to select the correct port. (Lots of YT videos explaining this) 6. In the Audio settings make sure to select the USB Audio device 7. Your computer Audio levels should be set so they don't "peak" the meters of either the software (WSJT-X) or the internal computer audio meters. 8. On your Radio switch your Meter to ALC, then select the quick button for Data Gain - lower this to about 5. 9. Lower your RX watts also to 5w. 10. Press the Tune button of your software, or MOX button on your radio to start transmitting in DATA-USB mode. 11. Watch the ALC meter. Repeat #10 on/off and adjust your Data Gain so that the ALC meter stays within about 25-50% of the meter scale. (Some might say it shouldn't show at all but that has not been the case for me.) 12. Lastly, make sure your computer time/clock is synched with an NTP server. ( I use a Mac so I just run a terminal command every time I start the computer.) I hope this helps!
I am now using Ham radio deluxe as my rig (for two radios the Yaesu FT-991A & Icom 7300) an one Dell Windows 11 laptop. Running WSJT-X FT-8. Do these instructions apply for FT-8 operations with UHF & VHF ?
Hey James sounds like a nice setup! I've honestly never tried FT-8 on UHF/VHF so I can't answer with any confidence, but it certainly wouldn't hurt to try. Good luck and happy hunting!
Hello, I need your support. I use an FT 991A and do WSJT-X via HAM Radio Deluxe. I set up the connection properly and the sound card also works. I control PTT via RTS. My problem is that when I go on air the MODE switches from D-USB to USB by itself. What could this be and do you have a solution? THX
Do you know why you are setting 032 CAT TOT to 100ms or did you find that setting somewhere else? Mine works at 10ms and I cannot find any information on the interwebs telling me exactly what it is for.
Hey Dennis - thanks for watching. 032 CAT TOT is the Time-Out-Timer which is important for the software trying to poll the radio during a CAT command. A lower setting, 10ms just tells the software that if xyz ... CAT command does not respond within that amount of time then to abc ... I hope that helps!

Hey Frank - thanks for watching! I have to tell you up front that I've traded this radio for a 7300 and love it! That being said, the 991A was a very capable radio and didn't have any CAT issues for me, however I found that the small buttons and compact design became more of an aggravation to me than a feature. @@W0KNI Thanks for the feedback. I will keep your comments in mind as I look for a setup that will give me SSB on 2m.
isn't it for digital mode on HF 40 meters using a bandwidth of 500Hz?
Now you have me thinking. WSJT-X will have a span of 3.5kHz but I believe your right that the actual FT-8 is only 500Hz.
now afterwards do I need to go back and undo the settings?
Hey Charles, thanks for watching. Only if another type of software needs different settings. This won't effect any SSB activity.
