That little bit of humor did stand out. When they meet Willem Dafoe's character and he's moving around his house, making plot-related dialogue, and he randomly offers a bottle and goes, "Schnapps?"

The best part about Orlok's look is that its so accurate to what an actual Transylvannian nobleman would look like. And his voice sounded like a pack of wolves growling. The sound design alone was so good!

As a Romanian myself you guys are demonstrating how much you don't know about Eastern European culture. Count Orlok is closer to a Ukrainian Cossack than a Transylvanian nobleman. Old pictures of Vlad Tepes would show quite different from Robert Egger's depiction. These differences need to be respected.

@@davercreson5543 I dunno, each painting of Vladdy boy shows a pretty magnificent mustache lol. I mean of course there's always going to be artistic interpretation involved in these things, but Orlok def felt more like a true Eastern European character vs the standard British looking bloke with slicked back hair and a dapper suit. Nuance is for historians

    • @RaduCostinD
      @RaduCostinD 10 дней назад +3

      That's a pretty shallow comment.
@SneakyCustard are you familiar with the "Transylvannian nobleman look"? I'm asking because you sound far off from the historically accurate look of such a nobleman (just like the character in this movie).
As a romanian myself, I can tell you that this Nosferatu did not look like a transylvannian nobleman. He just had a fur coat and a moustache.
Moustaches were everywhere back then and today as well - Ottoman empire included.
So... to put a bit of perspective in your uninformed comment - This Nosferatu was an original take on the character. Not accurate in any way, and that's fine - I get it's a fantasy movie, not a historical drama.
And my personal view on the movie: OK in most aspects, but the biggest fail was the main character - Nosferatu.
He was in the shadow most of the time (I understand he's a vampire, but it gave me the impression that the production/director had second thoughts on his costume therefore they hid him for most of the movie.) I think the costume was a terrible choice.
      Where are the teeth?
Seriously, in all Nosferatu movies, the main character was Nosferatu himself. In the 1922 film, you had loads of footage of him. In the 1979 you also had plenty of Nosferatu footage and lines.
This one - was shy, a bit confused and a zombie, not a great Count.

This movie had so much potential to be a masterpiece, but it fell just short of greatness, leaving me feeling a bit disappointed. The atmosphere was hauntingly beautiful, and the cinematography truly captured the gothic essence of Nosferatu, but certain narrative choices and pacing issues held it back from reaching its full potential. Generally for me characters are everything, I guess. If I can't relate to or sympathize with anyone on screen then it just feels like I'm watching a slideshow of pretty wallpapers.
I recently watched a movie that's pretty much the exact opposite style of something like nosferatu, it's called "didi", and I loved it. The characters were deep and that's all that mattered. His movies hitherto were all original scripts, but the basic events were not entirely new: The VVitch draws from New England witch trials; The Lighthouse draws from historical events involving the death of a lighthouse keeper under unclear circumstances; and The Northman draws from elements of Hamlet.
Yet, all stories, as they play out, are original ones, be it the characters, the plot, or how their main themes interlock.
The common approach to all three films, although these widely differ from each other in visual style, is Eggers' unique amalgamation of costume drama, character study, psychological thriller, existential dread and mythological horror, where all of these elements inform each other and are pretty consistently displaying a zeitgeist and mindset where the borders between subjective reality, subconscious symbolism, religious superstition, individual madness and/or supernatural interference shift or blur.
"Uncanny" is the adjective that comes to mind most starkly in Robert Eggers' cinematic universe.

With that said it’s been decades since I’ve seen Copplla’s film, I just remember being annoyed at Keanu’s “acting” (LOVE Keanu but that man does not have range) and if I remember correctly a weirdly happy ending? I agree on all that you said on the quality of cinematography and acting, BUT...it was slow moving and the build up was a let down. Left me a bit empty.

My theater was COMPLETELY sold out tonight. Was very happy for Robert Eggers. Worth the wait!

I watched it at a cinema in the UK and at the end of the movie I heard someone say "that was tedious" and someone else said "what a load of sh*t." I have to agree with them, I did not enjoy this movie and couldn't wait for it to finish. I'd wait for it to go to netflix if you want to watch it.

saw it in imax, many scenes were extremely loud/ jump scary but i agree i was never scared during any of it. Id say its repulsive in a good way. Everything about it is unsettling but it was beautiful to watch, everything was tip top, acting was great. Also agree, not my favorite eggers film but its still an egger film so its gonna be worth the watch.

I liked all of Eggers other works a lot. This movie looked and sounded beautiful. The actors did an incredible job. That being said, this was the first movie of his that I really didn't care for. It felt like a very slow burn with a lackluster payoff. Plus I absolutely couldn't stand the design of Nosferatu, which is so unfortunate. I thought that the mustache they gave him was going to be revealed as part of a disguise because it looked so bad, but it wasn't. It took me out so bad. As a kid, even seeing commercials with a shot of the original Nosferatu scared me because the creature design was so striking. I almost nodded off in the theater a couple of times. It should also be noted that me, my friends, and the people behind us all laughed when the movie ended because we were like "wtf, thats it?" which is not the reaction a movie like this should get

Big Bram Stoker’s Dracula vibes from this, with the way the set looks & appearance of the characters. The camera work is amazing as well! Looks like a good movie!

I literally just got back from watching this movie, and it was a MASTERPIECE. Absolutely delivered the goods on every level, unbelievable!
Every scene with Orlok is mesmerizing, I couldn't have looked away even if you paid me. It was kinda similar to the original Nosferatu, yet original and different. And his voice was hypnotic... 😵‍💫😵🥴
Lily Depp Rose put in an Oscar worthy performance here without question. She really stepped out of her dad's shadow with this performance. She isn't Depp daughter, she is an amazing young actress to look out for...
If this movie doesn't get some Oscar nominations and wins, there is ZERO justice in Hollywood. 💯

I must say I'm not familiar with "Nosferatu" in any way apart from an old Spongebob gag. But it had me the second Robert Eggers name appeared, and I'm all for a good and gothic vampire movie.

Nosferatu 1922 is the first vampire movie, and an important part of early cinematic history.

@@BullyMaguire4everYeah, still one of the best vampire movies, one of the best horror movies, one of the best black and white movies, one of the best silent movies, and also one of the best overall movies - not just as a cornerstone and touchstone of cinema history. The remake by Herzog of Murnau's classic movie, made in the nineteenseventies, is also a great adaptation.
