Skarsgard’s height is one of the better and more underrated feats of the casting. That 6’4” frame gives him the menacing and threatening look of towering over others. Almost forgot it was him until I saw the credits.
ANY version of _Nosferatu_ lives or dies depending on the people playing Orlock and Anna Hutter. As soon as I heard Bill Skarsgard and Lily-Rose Depp were playing those roles I knew this was going to be a banger--especially with Robert Eggers at the helm.
I haven't seen The Idol myself but from what I've heard it's the atrocious writing at fault and not the cast's performance (except for The Weeknd himself who's objectively untrained and unskilled in acting)
Just search "The Idol Opening Scene" and you will see that she never was the problem. Her acting was good in it it's just kinda hard to see if you gotta be naked instead for 90% of the time and your surrounded with an awful script and actors.
Last year, I flew to Mexico City and the German Cultural Center were doing a screening of the original Nosferatu film with a band doing a reimagined live soundtrack. I had never seen Nosferatu, but watching the movie in a parking lot during the cold city winter with hundreds of people drinking beer and eating pretzels is easily one of my favorite memories of my life and Nosferatu became a core part of me. I can’t fucking wait to see this movie. Every Eggers film is an experience and I know this will be no different. I’m taking my whole family. Merry Christmas!!!
This movie had so much potential to be a masterpiece, but it fell just short of greatness, leaving me feeling a bit disappointed. The atmosphere was hauntingly beautiful, and the cinematography truly captured the gothic essence of Nosferatu, but certain narrative choices and pacing issues held it back from reaching its full potential. I really wanted to love it, especially given how iconic and timeless the story is. Still, it’s a visually stunning reimagining that showcases the eerie brilliance of the original while trying to bring something new to the table.
Yes. It was certainly a beautiful film, but the story was a little boring to me, the vampire overdone, and though the acting was good, after about an hour, I was ready to be done with it. I was expecting/hoping it would be creepier.
In my opinion it was an awful movie, since the plot was just too predictable and boring. Certain elements just made me angry. The costumes and the atmosphere were great. The acting, especially from lily rose Depp, was quite decent, but still there was something missing. I had the feeling they couldn't really figure out what the movie should be. It wasn't a horror movie, it wasn't a horror thriller and it wasn't a real drama. I find myself hard to relate to the people. Overall it was an overrated movie for me.
I agree with this criticism. The movie felt very exposition heavy too like they couldn’t let the movie breathe. I wanted to be immersed in the gothic atmosphere & instead I was taken out of it by the overacting & awkward pacing.
@@kevinglucose4057 it wasn’t so much the story that I had a problem with…we all know the story, and there shouldn’t have been any major changes to the plot…I think I was just hoping for a good interpretation. I thought the acting was decent, but Depp’s character acted more like someone suffering from demonic possession, not someone under the spell of a vampire. I read something about them wanting to get as far as possible from the sympathetic vampires of the last few decades, to have the vampire be more like the vampires of Eastern European folklore, but for me, it just didn’t work. Orlok was like a cartoon. One of my favorite versions is the one from the 70s with Frank Langella, and even though Langella’s Dracula was handsome and likable, that one at least managed a few creepy scenes. I've been really excited to see this movie between Eggers, Dafoe, and the setting, I REALLY wanna see this movie. Loved The Lighthouse, so I hope the movie lives up.
3 out of 3 movies Eggers has made before are nothing short of masterpieces. This one is his first remake of sorts. I hope it's not a sell-out. After "The Witch" and "The Lighthouse" both being stellar in their own special way of combining period piece, psychological thriller and mythological horror, I became apprehensive when a trailer for "The Northman" made it look like he had taken on a mercenary project jumping on the mainstream bandwagon of the recent viking hype. Only to find out that my pessimism was unfounded when this third weird, precious, excentric piece of eggerism hit the cinema and turned out to be yet another raw yet intelligent work of visual narrative art with an indie vibe but a bigger budget. I can hardly wait to see "Nosferatu" at the theatre.
Will I be afraid. I want to watch it but scary movies even trailers keep me up at night...like I never watched Hereditary but I watched the trailer and it gave me nightmares
@@icomeinpeace3756 Nosferatu has some really powerful moments. Sleepy Hollow has a similar brooding, gothic vibe and is a great time. If you really like Sleepy Hollow and want something with more bite ;), watch Nosferatu. It is a Horror movie but not a "scary" movie like hereditary.

I just saw it yesterday. Not my favorite vampire movie, but it's up there. I like the inspiration from the silent film over 100 years ago. It properly feels like old school gothic horror. The acting was fantastic.

It's funny how some reviewers are saying it's the scariest movie of the year and others, like Chris S., say it's not actually scary, but more a dark fantasy. Eggers is a talented director and his passion shows through. Well done to the entire team. Skarsgard's performance is flawless and the design of Orlok and attention to detail makes it iconic.

I watched Nosferatu last night and your review was spot on. I was completely engrossed and so impressed - the sound, the acting, the sets, the filmography, the effects - all top notch. There were 3 moments in the movie where my eyes widened and I just thought wow. I’ve urged all my friends and family to watch it In the cinema because that iSense screen at Odeon really made it. 8/10 and thanks so much for your reviews!
All of the elements were there to make a great movie, but I left the theatre feeling underwhelmed. It did nothing for me. The best scene was the carriage sequence, in which Eggers was able to masterfully depict a dreamlike quality to the proceedings. Everything else left me feeling cold and disinterested.
Really looking forward to seeing this, this Christmas. As an ex JW myself, going to the movies on and around Christmas has always been a big thing and this is certainly going to be a good time.
I would say Eggers, Flanagan, and Ari Aster are the best modern horror directors from the US. Eggers and Aster have dipped their toes in other genres, but they still have a horror element to them. Peele and Ti West get honorable mentions.
Just watched it tonight. The cinematography was wondering, and so was the costume design and acting.... But something about it felt boring to me. I had a hard time staying focused.
For me it was the cheap feeling characters. The husband was just out there going through the motions. I wasn't registering emotionally with anything he was going through. The main woman's battle with her own psychology was better, but still felt undeveloped. Generally for me characters are everything, I guess. If I can't relate to or sympathize with anyone on screen then it just feels like I'm watching a slideshow of pretty wallpapers. I recently watched a movie that's pretty much the exact opposite style of something like nosferatu, it's called "didi", and I loved it. The characters were deep and that's all that mattered. Cinematography was shit, costumes and fancy lighting etc... non-existent. But I could connect with the characters and feel what they were going through. Loved it.
The movie was boring to me too and I'm a kind of person who would happily watch 2001: The Space Oddysey with great excitement at any time of day. I don't think the script was that good and I did't care about any of the characters. I like all previous Eggers movies especially the Witch though.
I don't really get the point on Eggers 'caring about the way people speak, the dialect, and the intonation', considering the film is set in Germany....where they speak German.... and where they definitely do not have posh British accents
Stuckmann probably won't read this - but on the off chance - what'd you think of it compared to the old versions? (Murnau & Herzog's). Which is your favorite of the three?
His movies hitherto were all original scripts, but the basic events were not entirely new: The VVitch draws from New England witch trials; The Lighthouse draws from historical events involving the death of a lighthouse keeper under unclear circumstances; and The Northman draws from elements of Hamlet. Yet, all stories, as they play out, are original ones, be it the characters, the plot, or how their main themes interlock. The common approach to all three films, although these widely differ from each other in visual style, is Eggers' unique amalgamation of costume drama, character study, psychological thriller, existential dread and mythological horror, where all of these elements inform each other and are pretty consistently displaying a zeitgeist and mindset where the borders between subjective reality, subconscious symbolism, religious superstition, individual madness and/or supernatural interference shift or blur. "Uncanny" is the adjective that comes to mind most starkly in Robert Eggers' cinematic universe.
Just saw this movie with no previews/spoiler ... fantastic. Then I started reading reviews after. Why are people so dumb about the dumbest things? How is this movie not a creative breakthrough on so many levels? It's what the art of movie making should be.
People like easily digestible things. They also like to be contrarian, to have the great unique opinion, harvest those likes. I personally couldn't care less, time will be the ultimate judge of this movie. That is what being good art is all about
It feels like another version of Bram Stoker's Dracula. I read somewhere there were some legal issues back then when the original came out due to portraiting similar characters as the book. I liked the atmosphere in this one so very much.
Seems to have shades of Francis Ford Coppola’s Dracula. Probably none of the over the top stuff, but definitely the dark gothic stuff. The hand shadow going over the town. Can’t wait to see it.
Coppola’s Bram Stoker’s Dracula is still my all time favorite vampire movie. For me it’s the gold standard, and ever since I have not been satisfied with any new take on the story. This film finally looks to be a worthy successor or counterpart to Coppola’s classic
It makes sense since these are all *kinda* the same story, but this feels (to me) mostly just inspired by the original film, with a Count Orlock redesigned to look like the original literary description of Dracula. With that said it’s been decades since I’ve seen Copplla’s film, I just remember being annoyed at Keanu’s “acting” (LOVE Keanu but that man does not have range) and if I remember correctly a weirdly happy ending? As in redemptive for Dracula? Am I remembering this correctly?
pleasantly surprised with Lily Rose Depp’s performance. Swore she looked familiar and when I realized after the movie she was in The Idol it kinda blew my mind although she was pretty good in that too.
This film was BEAUTFUL. So well shot. Well acted. But I had problems with the ending. Also, I feel count Orlok was never scary. The mustache was a bad choice. Lily-Rose stole the fucking show. SHE WAS AMAZING.
I thought he was scary in the fireplace scene, but every time it started to get scary, one of the characters would "wake up." That got old really fast.
An FYI Willem Dafoe actually played Nosferatu in the 2000 movie "Shadow of a vampire" the comedy/horror plot being a film within a film about the making of the original 1922 version & after the lead actor is found dead the real Nosferatu vampire (Dafoe) is hired to to fill in so the film can be completed along with the unexpected resulting deaths & mayhem of having Art meets the Undead 😵💫👹
Robert Eggers is probably our best horror director working now outside Jordan Peele. Very excited to see how this Nosferatu compares to the original and Herzog versions.
Dude, Jordan Peele shouldn't even be mentioned in the same breath. He hasn't made a good film since "Get Out" and even that wasn't "scary" at all and was just a thriller with comedic elements. And "Us" and "Nope" were just embarrassingly bad. Peele's reputation as a "horror" director has evaporated quicker than Shyamalan's did.
@redadamearth Recently watched Get Out for first time and it was Garbage and absolutely Stupid. Overhyped to the highest order and nothing scary or original about it
Jordan Peele is the most overrated horror movie director in today's time. They could announce he was going to direct a movie coming out three years for now and Critics would rave for it.
We saw this on boxing day. We also really appreciate Eggers and we hope he gets into more and more films. I am truly hoping someone makes a great, non-childish, Pirate film and I think he would be good for that. Also not my favourite of his movies but it did justice to the Nosferatu story while being a little different and having it's own voice.
Saw the movie two weeks ago, really one of the best movies of the year for me, the way I’d describe it is like a very very dark poem made into a movie, with just some jump scares here and there, but this is pure dark poetry by Eggers, highly recommend it.
I can't agree more, Aster hasn't impressed me that much, Peele is going more towards race horror, but Eggers time period peices are so beautiful, creepy and amazing.

Also agree, not my favorite eggers film but its still an egger film so its gonna be worth the watch.
I liked all of Eggers other works a lot. This movie looked and sounded beautiful. The actors did an incredible job. That being said, this was the first movie of his that I really didn't care for. It felt like a very slow burn with a lackluster payoff. Plus I absolutely couldn't stand the design of Nosferatu, which is so unfortunate. I thought that the mustache they gave him was going to be revealed as part of a disguise because it looked so bad, but it wasn't. It took me out so bad. As a kid, even seeing commercials with a shot of the original Nosferatu scared me because the creature design was so striking. I almost nodded off in the theater a couple of times. It should also be noted that me, my friends, and the people behind us all laughed when the movie ended because we were like "wtf, thats it?" which is not the reaction a movie like this should get
Big Bram Stoker’s Dracula vibes from this, with the way the set looks & appearance of the characters. The camera work is amazing as well! Looks like a good movie!
I literally just got back from watching this movie, and it was a MASTERPIECE. Absolutely delivered the goods on every level, unbelievable! Every scene with Orlok is mesmerizing, I couldn't have looked away even if you paid me. It was kinda similar to the original Nosferatu, yet original and different. And his voice was hypnotic... 😵💫😵🥴 Lily Depp Rose put in an Oscar worthy performance here without question. She really stepped out of her dad's shadow with this performance. She isn't Depp daughter, she is an amazing young actress to look out for... If this movie doesn't get some Oscar nominations and wins, there is ZERO justice in Hollywood. 💯
I must say I'm not familiar with "Nosferatu" in any way apart from an old Spongebob gag. But it had me the second Robert Eggers name appeared, and I'm all for a good and gothic vampire movie.

Skarsgard’s height is one of the better and more underrated feats of the casting. That 6’4” frame gives him the menacing and threatening look of towering over others. Almost forgot it was him until I saw the credits.
Robbert Eggers and Denis Villeneuve are me favorite directors atm, I'll definitely watch it
Ari Aster is also an incredible director.
I don't think the director will end up with Eggers on his face.
@@matthewzang6688 Aster isn't in the same league as the other two.
@@ariescustom I disagree. I personally think he's at least as great as Eggers.
@@matthewzang6688 You're welcome to your opinion.
ANY version of _Nosferatu_ lives or dies depending on the people playing Orlock and Anna Hutter. As soon as I heard Bill Skarsgard and Lily-Rose Depp were playing those roles I knew this was going to be a banger--especially with Robert Eggers at the helm.
Lily Depp made you know this was going to be a banger?
@@StevelyBruckShut Yes. I don't hold that godawful The Weeknd show against her.
the cast is brilliant !!! personally can't wait to see what Emma Corrin brings to the table, they always take any role to the NEXT level
the casting hardly matters with a director like Eggers running the show. a great director can pull a good performance out of anyone
You know that just because some random lady was in it it wouldn't brilliant? Please.
How Lily-Rose Depp went from The Idol to this, I’ll never understand. Brilliant performance
I haven't seen The Idol myself but from what I've heard it's the atrocious writing at fault and not the cast's performance (except for The Weeknd himself who's objectively untrained and unskilled in acting)
The idol did have some acting from her part. Only the production and Weeknd f-ed up the script and everything else
apparently anya taylor joy dropped out of nosferatu so she was next on deck.
Actors go from one thing to another not surprising
This one - can’t think of one. It’s too bad. As the OP said, it could have been great.
@@kevinglucose4057you’re conplaining that the plot which is a retelling of the 1922 movie which is a retelling of Bram Stokers novel was “predictable”?? What the fuck did you expect??
Just watched it an hour ago at the World premiere in Berlin. Loved it. Every scene is art.

It's funny how some reviewers are saying it's the scariest movie of the year and others, like Chris S., say it's not actually scary, but more a dark fantasy. A vampire movie at Christmas? Could this really work for Mr. Eggers?
The EXORCIST was released on December 26, 1973. Let that sink in. 😊
All of the elements were there to make a great movie, but I left the theatre feeling underwhelmed. It did nothing for me. The best scene was the carriage sequence, in which Eggers was able to masterfully depict a dreamlike quality to the proceedings. Everything else left me feeling cold and disinterested.
0:58 I highly doubt it, since he said in an interview that he's more interested in history than in film.
Really looking forward to seeing this, this Christmas. As an ex JW myself, going to the movies on and around Christmas has always been a big thing and this is certainly going to be a good time.
Some of the subtle 6s for demonic imagery throughout different scenes was just a chefs kiss from a design perspective
Was there? I didn’t catch any of them
I would say Eggers, Flanagan, and Ari Aster are the best modern horror directors from the US. Eggers and Aster have dipped their toes in other genres, but they still have a horror element to them. Peele and Ti West get honorable mentions.
Ti West is overrated and Peele's movies are getting worse, not better.

Already purchased my ticket for Xmas day -- definitely my most anticipated movie of 2024!
Just watched it tonight. The cinematography was wondering, and so was the costume design and acting.... But something about it felt boring to me.
I had a hard time staying focused.
thought i was the only one
For me it’s because it was a horror movie that just wasn’t that scary. Great movie yes but it was no scary at all
For me it was the cheap feeling characters.
Very comparable yet different.
Regardless of the review …… looking forward to seeing this in the theater
Were Eggers' other movies all original? Because that would make this his first adapted project as Nosferatu is technically a version Dracula.
Well, not only that but it clearly wouldn’t be an original anyway because it’s a remake, so to speak.
That is what being good art is all about
Having seen the original 1922 version over 60 times in my lifetime I can honestly say this one will come no where close
I haven't been hyped for a movie like this in a long time
It feels like another version of Bram Stoker's Dracula.
The moustache was historically accurate, and he's not a monster, he's a "solomonari" it's mentioned in the movie, he's an evil human wizard
It is a true story as well.
Love Shadow of the Vampire
Overhyped to the highest order and nothing scary or original about it
Ooooooooooh scary white petiole. Boo. 😂 He’s terrible.
Jordan Peele is the most overrated horror movie director in today's time. They could announce he was going to direct a movie coming out three years for now and Critics would rave for it.
I think you miswrote Ari Aster
I already told my family that I'll be ducking out early on the traditional Christmas Dinner because I have a date with a Count Orlok.
The original film wasn't Hollywood slasher scary either. Have a look at the original, it's like Murnau filmed one of his nightmares.
out of the recently established “big 3” of new horror directors, aster, peele, and eggers, eggers is my favorite

It should also be noted that me, my friends, and the people behind us all laughed when the movie ended because we were like "wtf, thats it?" which is not the reaction a movie like this should get
Can’t wait to watch “The Nosferatu.”

Lily Depp Rose put in an Oscar worthy performance here without question. She really stepped out of her dad's shadow with this performance. She isn't Depp daughter, she is an amazing young actress to look out for...
