I wrote a suite of music for instruments I designed and built (and guitar). Here's one of the songs!
Well...excepting the saucepan, I guess. I didn't make that. But I do maintain that "percussion instrument" isn't its intended purpose!
I got so busy making videos about my vinyl collection that I forgot about this project, but some of you have been asking for the rest of it, and I'm happy to oblige. Thanks for the reminder.
When this project was first commissioned, I had no idea what I was signing up for - surely writing an 8-part suite on instruments that I was still building, then recording it, then mixing it, then making a series of videos, then editing those and putting it all together would be a breeze, right?
It's fair to say I misjudged. But I wouldn't trade it for the world. While i...

Every Sound There Is: How a Revolver Deep Cut Maps The Beatles' Past, Present and Future
Просмотров 27 тыс.12 часов назад
As is the case most weeks, I went in to this one unsure of whether I'd have anything to say about this song. Sure, I like it, but what's to explore beyond that? And as is the case most weeks, a single listen told me everything I needed to know and then some. It turns out that this might be a song about Hamburg, about Mozart, and about artistic evolution. Or maybe it's just about Frank Sinatra a...

Stevie wrote a masterpiece, and they took it away from her - more on that in due course! This is a consideration of the song that took its place. In this episode: we break the band into its constituent parts and put 'em all back together again, to figure out why it works so damn well! We continue in our journalistic inquiry into Who Won The Breakup! And then, my friends, we dance. You all know ...
Of * course * The Beatles' "Good Day Sunshine" deserves a spot on Revolver!

My definitive ranking of Beatles sun songs, to those interested parties, is as follows: 1. Here Comes The Sun (a masterpiece) 2. Good Day Sunshine 3. Sun King (eccentric, hypnotic, lovable, but not peak Beatles) 4. I'll Follow The Sun (a solidly good song, ultimately a little insubstantial by comparison against the others) I had intended to include this ranking in the video, but forgot until th...

John may be a better lyricist, but Paul wrote my favorite Beatles lyric of all: “And though she feels as if she’s in a play / she is anyway.”

Remember the infamous comment and what I didn’t know at the time is that the press was deliberately and highly selective in editing his comment, basically eliminating the context. I also met people from Texas who recalled that era. They came from very conservative religious environments and it was pretty clear that the southern churches were eager to burn albums, to find ways to attack the Beatles. The same mindset is rather pervasive among that segment of society, even 58 years later.

To me, the line in “A day in the life,” has a reference to the Kennedy assassination. “He blew his mind out in a car.” “All the people stood and stared.” “They’d seen his face before, nobody was really sure if he was from the House of Lords.”

You are terrific! What an excellent dive into this wonderful song! You reference Classical music, other bands and go on to demonstrate how great the Beatles were at song writing and performing multiple versions and takes until it was as perfect as humanly possible. (With a little help from their friends like George Martin & Geoff Emerick.)

I'm absolutely convinced that John didn't adhere to time and changed when he felt the lyrics said what he wanted to say at that moment. I does this with solo stuff too. Once the musicians get it, the transitions are quite smooth and necessary. Yeah, you hear the song writing divide from John and Paul from this album on.

'She said, she said' was two of Johns songs 'She said, she said' and 'When I was a boy' stitched together, the putting them together was George's idea, which John eagerly took up after Ringo said it was a great idea and he could handle it. Paul's idea were rejected as changing too much what John was hearing in his head, especially against the melodic bass Paul intended, and the softer edge sound he suggested - George was more in tune this time, and helped bring the whole together. Paul had a fit of pique and said 'Well, fuck off then!' (according to Mal Evans), and went home around the corner to Cavendish Avenue. As a result, George played the bass, both John and George exchanged lead guitar parts. When the track was done, they all went around to Paul's and made it up.

Norwegian Wood and Love You To were both written and recorded before the event in question. If Shankar had input to Beatles songs sound wise, it would be Within You Without You, Bluejay way and The Inner Light. You may have been confused by the strange release days of Beatles material in the US.

Dustbin lid is British cockney slang for 'kid'. So it is not a bad lyric, you are just not aware of its meaning. John wrote plenty of meaningless lyrics: "Semolina pilchard, climbing up the Eiffel Tower Elementary penguin singing Hari Krishna", and John said that they had no meaning. He also wrote some dreadful lyrics: "In the middle of a shave In the middle of a shave I call your name Oh, Yoko Oh, Yoko My love will turn you on."

Jefferson Airplane’s sound was totally different, and from “After.Bathing at Baxter’s” onward, much, much darker. I think the War darkened a lot of the music coming out of the United States, particularly towards decade’s end.

Once again, this is a good insightful review of the song. One thing that I would add though is, although Paul is a great songwriter, bass player, piano player, he's a lousy lead guitarist, and this song displays that. The lead solo is a frantic mess, with an attempt at sounding exotic with the standard go to for rock musicians who really only have minor pentatonic chops: The linear minor scale run down. In an attempt to sound sophisticated, they'll throw in a linear scale that has a middle eastern sound. But there is no mojo to it. Its really basic stuff. Paul did that on this guitar solo. This is one of the worst lead guitar solos on a Beatle record. Paul was egotistical enough to reject George's solo tries, and put his own crappy solo in the track. Other than that I really like this song. Thanks for the reivew.

Sometime around this period, Ravi Shankar and Yehudi Menuhin did as series of London concerts titled East Meets West. I have read that this played a role in George’s interest in Indian music. Could this have been during that three-month Beatles sabbatical?

Another great analysis. Although you know and love this music, you're very good at stepping back from it to take a look at it from different perspectives. This song has been derided in previous critques, which I think is unfair. You've highlighted the reasons, I believe, this song deserves to be on this record, at the height of the band's creativity. And he had just turned 23. George had referred to his music as Country & Eastern, an appropriate summary of his influences.

I experienced the Beatles in realtime - I was just coming up to ten years old when this song came out, and wouldn't start taking piano lessons till a year later. So they were a bit beyond me... but always there as the soundtrack of my [generation's] life, and always there to come back to. Now, 58 years later, your musical knowledge and Beatles enthusiasm bring me joy and a deeper appreciation of the artistry of the song. Thank you!
