RollingStone is infamously, almost never right, and it took the BlackLivesMatter protests before they finally elevated this musical&political powerhouse to #1... Better VERY late then never though, right?

I don't see how to turn a subjective thing into an "objective" statement. There's no best album of all time. All these lists are opinions and preferences. That said, the best album of all time is definitely What's Going On. Or maybe Blonde on Blonde. Or maybe The White Album. No, it's Blue. Or Monk/Trane. Oh, I don't know.

I am stunned to find out that bass was being played by a person so drunk he had to lie down.

"how sweet it is to be loved by you" was a staple in james taylor's set list, and a fixture of my childhood. so i was well primed to enjoy marvin's work in adulthood. FANTASTIC work this week! (and expert accompaniment by kitty)

I really really really loved your breakdown of this great record. In addition to the historical, cultural, and personal background, I loved the 3 musical demonstrations (vocals, bass, and keys). Simply awesome.

Right on, Fathom, right on! What a pleasure... If you want to get a diamond from coal you must put it under enormous pressure. I think most people would not read the state of Marvin's life at that time and think 'sign me up!' but from all he was going through the world certainly gained one if its most precious gems...

Glad I'm not the only person laughing at Marvin's football aspirations. We are all semi delusional or aspiring but celebrity adds a heavy layer of crazy or kneejerk to your thoughts, I would assume.

I don’t want to minimize the insightful musical analysis and spendid commentary, but let’s just admit that “Vinyl Friday” is basically a weekly cat video with bonus content.

one of the greatest singers. also at this conjuncture of politics and popular culture, a brave musician.
the examples and highlighting of the significance of call and response music was a strong point in the video. james jamerson is almost as cool as marvin !
good reasons for claiming this great album was the greatest of all time but surely when you think of contenders it would have to eliminate to reach that lofty summit: nah surely? sometimes rolling stone is so far up its own..
anyway. the belief that god maybe could give the answer is a weakness imo. that's not being dismissive of the music but it's a building block of the message. there was i think an agreement at the conclusion of vinyl monday vinyl friday cinematic universe crossover event ( the chance of me remembering the correct title are a big 0️⃣) and it was that passion was the essential ingredient in music ( hey maybe in everything). it's in what's going on in spades, it overflows in your head when the sound isn't physically there. the album is a triumph and i get the passion playing everytime the needle goes into those grooves.

Spot-on review, Alan! I'm also not certain it would take my vote for the GOAT...there are a LOT of great albums out there, so it has a lot of competition. But likely the top 50!
I'm glad the call and response was a highlight - it's certainly something I enjoy talking about; I just hoped it would translate to also being something good to listen to!

hey i think you're missing that bass player who plays the by now iconic green bass. honestly, people can be so ungenerous.
