Question! Do you think Jeff Lynne is creative genius? Why/why not?
I look forward to reading your answers. 😊

against my will ( hey that's a good title for a song) i've come around to understanding and appreciating more of the complexities offered up in this music. the big band vision was brave. i think to confirm genius status an artist maybe has to be less derivative? oh yeah and wear toucan socks.

Once again, absolutely love your reaction. As a musician and studio guy and singer-songwriter and composure and all that stuff of many years, what you're doing here is highly engaging, and it also puts a huge smile on my face, I don't know why. ❤

I love the Brontosaurus,, a song he did when he was still in The Move. In a way it is already mature Jeff Lynn, with that weighty voice.

The guy on your T-shirt is the argentinian musician Charly Garcia, one of the most important composers in the argentinian rock scene 🇦🇷.
García was the leader and founding member of bands like Serú Girán and La Máquina de Hacer Pajaros (The machine that make birds). As solo career, he released in the 80s albums like "Yendo de la Cama al Living" (Going from the bed to the living room), "Piano-Bar", "Clicks Modernos" (Modern Clix), and "Parte de la Religión" (Part of the religion).
    ----------
As for Jeff Lynne, the influence of The Beatles on his music is undeniable, however, he and ELO represent a concrete possibility of what the Fab Four would have sounded like if they had not broken up.
    Greetings. 🇲🇽🙂

Ding ding ding!! He's one of my favourite artists (Bicicleta, Clix modernos and Tango are up there for me). I think that anyone with any interest whatsoever in '70s rock (esp of the slightly proggy persuasion) needs to check out his earlier output in particular.
Edit: in case anyone wants to check them out, I think this is a good starting point: ruclips.net/video/YRNFye2SysM/видео.htmlsi=NCRiqgwRv8lmiJEg Listen to the whole thing. It pays off. 😁

Yes he is a genius. Mr Blue Sky & Confusion are my two most favourite ELO songs. A snippet of history - I went to an ELO concert, probably late 1970's, at Western Springs. It was awesome. They had a laser light generator for special effects & they did The Flight Of The Bumblebee & the fluoro green laser light was zooming all around the trees up on the hill behind us. Just like a bumblebee! But thank you Fathom, for your insights into Mr Blue Sky. I had never thought about it like that. Just listened & enjoyed.

I like Jeff Lynne and should probably explore his work more deeply. He was pretty big in the UK. Perhaps another reason why he didn't get bigger is that critics have generally been a bit sniffy about him. Now I couldn't care less what a critic thinks, but it is true that music journalists were powerful in shaping opinions back in the 70s and 80s.

    ba ba babababa
catchy elements in the song and the beatles inheritance is as strong here as anywhere in their output. i was in awe of your ability in showing direct quotes from beatles songs. it does, though, move into stranger territory quite unexpectedly. the strings section i think is a leftover from the suite he was writing for the accompanying album. can you imagine the string players being handed those parts: they must have been 'oh yes!'.
i'm getting wagnerian vibes from the anvil and i'm almost hearing a ring cycle quote at the very end. swear i'm not on the guiness again.
on his personality; i love how lynne never altered his working class accent ( midlands). believe me in english culture there is great pressure to do that, to fit in, as you become successful. i think he is unassuming despite his success and i applaud him for it.

  • @aBeatleFan4ever

Love all the examples you highlighted of Jeff paying homage to The Beatles. I had not picked up on the connection to "Yesterday".
Nancy... Paul starts out by saying (at 6:53): "Everyone was borrowing from the people they admired." Then adds later... "I know where he got that from." So it's not like he was putting ELO down - or calling Jeff Lynne out for "plagiarizing". He was saying we ALL take from the songs and the artists that we admire. And so it's basically McCartney saying that it's cool that Jeff Lynne admired what they were doing so much that he chose to borrow from them. I see it as more a good thing - while you seem to be seeing it as a negative thing. You seem to have it in your head - that Paul's first words to Jeff were... "So you like to plagiarize our stuff, you daft bastard." When it was probably more like this... "Jeff, I like the way you incorporated some of the stuff we did into your music". I think Jeff was probably quite happy that Paul recognized and appreciated what he was doing.
8:42 "There's a choir at the end of this song." I love that part. It may be my favorite part of the entire track.
"We has a blast!" I love your enthusiasm and joy for all the effort and fun you had when working out how to perform this track live.
Piano correspondent does another fantastic segment on the chords to the outro. I think she deserves a raise.
"The way he uses strings as a counterpoint to the vocal melodies." Love your comments on that part. "They're woven together. It works. I don't know how it works . I don't know how it's not too busy... but it works. Good job, Jeff."
12:58 - 15:00 Your in depth description of all these various wonderful little parts of this song are so ELOquently delivered by you. Well done, Jeff Lynn... and well done, Nancy.
Why isn't ELO bigger..? I agree with you, Nancy. Jeff is an amazing writer, producer, musician, arranger, singer... everything you said. But... I think a lot of people just don't care for his production style. I know many music fans who see his stuff as "over produced" pop music. They don't like what he did with ELO or with George Harrison or with Tom Petty or with The Beatles 2 mid 1990s "new songs" or with any of the many albums he has produced. Everybody has there own tastes... I like what he adds to all of those different artists - including his work on McCartney's 1997 "Flaming Pie" album. I was very glad when he was finally inducted into the R&R HOF... but it should have happened a lot sooner.
Btw... "Mr. Blue Sky isn't the only song that did a lot poorer in the US charts for ELO.
10538 Overture #9 in UK... DNC in US
Roll Over Beethoven #6 in UK... #42 in US
Showdown #12 in UK... #53 in US
Livin' Thing #4 in UK... #13 in US
Rockaria! #9 in UK... DNC in US
Mr. Blue Sky #6 in UK... #35 in US
Wild West Hero #6 in UK... DNC in US
Sweet Talkin' Woman #6 in UK... #17 in US
Diary of Horace Wimp #8 in UK... DNC in US
Confusion #8 in UK... #37 in US
Last Train to London #8 in UK... #39 in US
I do want to add this about the popularity of "Mr. Blue Sky" in the US... While it peaked at #35 on the chart... over the long haul, it sold extremely well in the US - selling over 3 million copies. The song sold over 6 million world wide.
Yes... your series on 4 ELO songs has changed my mind. I always thought Jeff Lynne was amazing... but now I think he is even more amazing. Your ability to expertly dive into so many wonderful details - makes every song even more fun to experience. Thanks for doing that.
looks like Weird Al Yankovic... on your shirt.
I like that little behind the scenes look into the piano correspondent's hard work - to make all this happen. Bravo, Miss PC. Hope you get that raise.

I never brought into the idea that ELO was a copy of The Beatles. Sure like a lot of artist, they found inspiration and barrowed ideas from them to incorporate into their own sound. ELO developed a sound of their own. Out of the Blue album was like A New World Record on steroids like Sgt. Pepper was Revolver on on steroids.
