This is such an amazing song. My dad passed away yesterday and this was one of his favorite bands and songs. Oh how I miss summer when we went on a trip to Devon. We played this song as we were driving under the blue sky. It remains one of my favorite memories of my dad. I can only smile every time I hear this amazing song. I'm so thankful he introduced me to it.
Completely true. I like them more now than I did as an 11 year old kid. I enjoy their music almost more, if not more than the Beatles. Truly. Comparing them is stupid in the first place, but still...If I had to pick between listening to this, or the Magical Mystery Tour, I would have to think about it for quite some time...

Wow, so sorry for your loss. I lost my best friend 20 years ago and still grieve. I listen to this song in the mornings when getting up seems impossible.
I lost my son Cody at the age of 34 on his way to work October 23, 2020. I will never forget him (about the age of one) sitting in his car seat listening to this song bopping his head of red curls and pretending to snap his fingers saying "I love this one daddy. It has a beat." One of his favorites during his short life on this earth. Memories are everything when it's all you have left.

A CBC radio documentary about or mentioned ELO I heard long ago- Paul McCartney was asked what would have happened, had the Beatles continued (into the 70s and 80s), what would they have sounded like? "Basically we'd be pretty much ELO" . He made it sound like that's what they were shooting for around the time they broke up.

When I was around 7-10, I was completely obsessed with ELO. I put their greatest hits album on every day, drew pictures of Jeff Lynn and stuck them on my wall, and even got to see them live. A very prominent part of my childhood.
It's 1 of my earliest memories so it will live with me forever it's just a happy cheery song compared to the death and gun shooting chaos of today's Rap which I love..but Jeff's classic will always outdo it not a problem.🎷🎶🎵🎻🎧
The night my grandpa died I drove off with my car, away from their house, and I heard a preview of this song on the radio and I turned the volume down, annoyed by the joy of the song while I was feeling so immensely sad. I did listen to it when they played it a couple of minutes later. The end of the song started exactly when I returned home and parked my car. I never forget that, I always cry when I hear the end of this beautiful song. 🌹

Here from 10 years in the future. William Herbert has found a way to learn eternal happiness through this song and is ending the world’s depression, something nobody has ever accomplished. He is considered one of the happiest person to ever exist and will forever live in our hearts as the hero who ends our sadness.
So many hours did I spend as a boy listening to this album over and over. I believe it was 2 records if I remember correctly (or was that The Wall, or both)? No matter. The artiwork, the songs, just everything. I liked this song then. Then I forgot about it. Only now in the past few years have we begun to hear this song again. I Iike it SO MUCH MORE today. In fact, I think I would have to say that this is, after nearly 50 years, my favorite song on the album! So much crap, garbage music has come and gone since these days over the years, it makes me appreciate this true gem all the more. I see they are playing in Dubuqe, IA in May. I may actually make it a point to make the long drive to see that!!

Then in the studio: someone said 'aren't you over-producing it a bit Jeff?' Jeff: hold my guitar. Someone said 'nice, that's a good ending on 3mins' Jeff: we've got another 90 seconds of modulation, speeding up slowing down, vocoder and full orchestra sound yet. It's the most joyously over-the-top pop song ever, with such a strong melody even the millions of overdubs/sounds/instruments can't hide it, you never want it to end, nor did Jeff...
I'd like to propose an idea. Every time this song hit's it's anniversey we should all listen to it every day for a week, in admiration for this song and, William Herbert.

My dad used to blast this on the stereo when I was a teen sleeping in circa ‘00s. 20 yrs later, just used it to get my teen out of bed. Love continuing the cycle ☺️
What a unique song. It's cheery, catchy, light-hearted, and with such lovely vocals, but yet something about it feels a tad bit sinister - I can totally see it being used ironically in a compilation of apocalyptic-themed media. Especially the "But soon comes Mr. Night creepin' over , Now his hand is on your shoulder" bit.

I suffered a burn-out and depression past year. Going into therapy and talked a lot about my "issue" with friends and family. And day by day i felt better and enjoyed life more and more. And if they shouldn't then I guess that would be the reason that nobody makes stuff like this anymore. You can't both have your way. Either bands don't make stuff like this anymore (and they should) or this is derivative (which is bad). Which is it.

This is such a brilliant sounding band. How on Earth did they discover the music? Its the kind of music that will never go out of fashion. Just brilliant x
Because Jeff Lynn knew what he wanted to do when he named his band the Electric Light Orchestra, not a band. He then proceeded to use all kinds of instruments in their music. He was, and still is, a remarkable musical genius who doesn't seem to think he is. That makes him even more loveable!

As a orchestra player, specifically a cellist, it’s nice knowing songs like this have string instruments in them (not counting the electric guitar and bass) that don’t dominate the music, but are also able to be noticed and heard
This song is almost entirely string instruments! Guitars and pianos have strings too.

In the 1970's many songs included strings other than guitars.

Either bands don't make stuff like this anymore (and they should) or this is derivative (which is bad). Which is it.
Loads of bands do. Loads of bands out there still make great music, you just gotta listen to it! Check out 'great job' by Chai if you want a daft happy song!
Had this 8 track. Always had to listen to this to gain access to a more popular song. Ended up loving the 8 track. Very very talented musicians. Made driving my convertible cutlass a dream. Tom Erwin MacArthur 1974 graduate.
The end piece 4:29, with sudden tempo change, soft ascending strings, piano and choir always brings a tear to my eye.
What a beautiful way to end a song.
Amazing nice with this song still listening... How are you Bob ?

Mr. Blue Sky is the last song in a four-song suite called Concerto for a Rainy Day. The end piece is a reprise of the first song. Here's the whole thing: ruclips.net/video/PWnYae52Bd4/видео.html
Yes there is something magic about this song :)
This song brings back memories. I miss riding with my grandfather and listening to classic rock. I miss him
He sounds like a good guy I hope you know he loves you even if he's not there
The thought of this and how it must hurt really made me tear up for a sec. Because there is nothing anyone can do to stop that feeling. The sadness will always come with the happy moments.

I was there listening in 1978 on 7 inch vynal still here 2024 listening on I phone u tube still love it.👌
This song is like too cheery and happy for the reality of this world which is why it's so dark to a lot of people.
Especially now in 2020 during the Pandemic But starting to improve around February and March
You're a "glass is half empty" sort of person aren't ya? Reality is hard to change but your attitude dealing with it is entirely up to you.
@@mikeyoung9810 I like to think of myself as a "it doesn't matter wherther the glass is half for or half empty" its water I'mma just drink it.

Good band and good song it reminds me of the duchess Rachael Rebecca and she's from the Windsor line
Everything reminds me of a girl I met at the Jew motel Fergus falls a long time ago but it's only been 10 to 13 years ago. It seems like yesterday sometimes. She's my only attachment to love in his seemingly insane world at times. I'm still holding on to a flame she reignited in me. Love at first sight. I guess she likes to be called Becky or Boka sometimes. Bock over and out for now. Peace
I wonder where oh where can she be.
Because he heard The Beatles !
I've seen them in the US, and Europe more than any band... Jeff Lynne not only gave me his guitar pick, but signed my badge ( backstage pass on a lanyard), and got three others- Bev Bevan and I can't think of the others- to autograph, as well!!!! * I was young and didn't look like a monster, yet
Agreed
Not how on earth, they are out of this world

God I miss the 80's. My father who unfortunately passed when I was 18; made sure I knew his music before he died. I have literally done the music trivia like he raised me on as a kid I still challenge myself to remember the band the name of the song and sometimes the year the record came out that one's harder than most. But I can still pretty much recall any band by the sound of their voice but if it comes to naming band members or albums or whatever that's on my only surviving uncle who was my dad's brother lol
That high-pitched "so long" in the chorus gets me every time.
Dear William Herbert, please know that I, and a whole lot of people believe in you and give you our love and support 😉

One of the best Beatles songs never done by the Beatles.
OMG LOL YES

Great trip down memory lane. You get to hear the songs from when you were 7 years old and realize they were actually from 10 years before that. I guess my parents even listened to what were the "oldies" back then.
