What's YOUR ideal track order for Fleetwood Mac's Rumours?

    • @jolynejameson2630

      Gold Dust Woman absolutely.

the sequencing debate is more crucial, i think, when band's might be hiding weaker stuff. look to the beatles though: did they take chances messing around with the opening track? never ever that's whenever. in that sense don't stop would have made more sense but you're right nancy, surely the chain is a big summation of the entire album and what a closer it would make.
then there's the silver springs controversy: another good reason to watch abby's take.

Like in concerts, The Mac could've opened with The Chain & ended with Songbird. 🤔✨💕

Tough to say, because I like the track order as it was released, but I thought I'd play around with it. Here's what I decided:
      Side 1
      "Second Hand News:
      "Dreams"
      "Never Going Back Again"
      "Oh Daddy"
      "Go Your Own Way"
      "Songbird"
      Side 2
      "Don't Stop"
      "You Make Loving Fun"
      "The Chain"
      "I Dont' Wanna Know"
      "Gold Dust Woman"

This Easter my niece had her 26 birthday. She recently got a stereo set up with turntable and have been purchasing some of the newer 180 gram vinyl records of artist she is into. I wanted to give her an album that represented the best of 1970s music and while there are many great ones to chose from I selected Rumours. I included a brief write up about the album. Rumours was a very successful album with all radio friendly songs and a classic. I also like the follow ups, the more experimental Tusk, Mirage and Tango In The Night albums as well.

Being that Rumours exists as a car cd for me, I’ve never questioned the order. I thik second hand news is THE start a vacation song (I’m pretty sure thats why its even in the movie “Vacation.”) But, I’m not bummed out by Dreams coming next, I get the point about if it were a live performance but in the car, after the Excitement of getting out on the road, it gives me a second breath to somewhat bouncily contemplate whats to come ad start enjoying the scenery and blue skies.

I love this album and treasure the original pressing that I inherited. Personally, I've no problem with the sequencing. It works fine to my ears. The songs sort of answer each other, I think.

From when it was first released I have always listened to the record from start to finish in its original order but I must admit when I recorded it on to cassette I moved "The Chain" to be last. Also, I read somewhere that Lindsay's "Bow bow bows" were meant to be a guitar solo that never happened so he left them in.

I heard the haunting song "Silver Spring" on the radio at the time this album was released, but the DJ didn't announce the song title. I bought this album and several other Fleetwood Mac albums looking for that song. A decade later I learned that it was only released (at the time) as the B-side of "Go Your Own Way." I wish they had included that song on "Rumours."

you discussed sequencing tweaks! That's one of my biggest obsessions. I'll come back to you on Rumours but check out this redo of Magical Mystery Tour that may be even more enjoyable (and more of a musical tour) than the original album! It uses the full UK ep sequence because that flows so well.
    1 Magical Mystery Tour
    2 Your Mother Should Know
    3 I Am The Walrus
    4 Fool On The Hill
    5 Flying
    6 Blue Jay Way
    7 All Together Now
8 All You Need Is Love
    9 Hello Goodbye
    10 Strawberry Fields Forever
    11 Penny Lane
    12 Only A Northern Song
13 You Know My Name (Look Up The Number)
    14 Across The Universe (WWF)
    15 It's All Too Much
    16 Baby You're A Rich Man
the last two tracks would have to be included as a bonus single with the album for vinyl length. It's not precisely chronologically accurate but musically it works great. I started a blog to house this and the many other resequencing/reconstructions I do, the Better Albums Blog! check it out if you're interested, I'm currently doing a series of Jimi Hendrix album reconstructions I've been tinkering to perfection with since 2020 xoxoxoxo

    • @robintownrobintown
      @robintownrobintown Месяц назад

I've also redone Let It Be and retitled it Get Back, with all the live tracks at the front, and only using the orchestration the Beatles did themselves.
      1. One After 909 (2021 remix)
      2. Dig A Pony (2021)
      3. I've Got A Feeling (2021)
      4. Don't Let Me Down (blue album remix)
      5. Two Of Us (Naked)
      6. Get Back (Naked)
      7. For You Blue (Naked)
      8. Long And Winding Road (Naked)
      9. I Me Mine (Naked)
      10. Let It Be (2015 mix from 1)
Opens and closes with bangs! Isn't that so much tighter an album? I have no idea why Spector muted one of the guitars in For You Blue and I don't know why they didn't use the superior studio version of Don't Let Me Down on naked (along with removing the ambiance on the live tracks), so this has the best of both worlds :)

Cool! I really like this sequencing, except I'd open side B with Strawberry Fields and swap You Know My Name with All Too Much. It's huge, but nicely contrasted against Across the Universe for a quieter, more contemplative close.

    • @robintownrobintown
      @robintownrobintown Месяц назад

I'll give that a shot @@fathommusicnz! Just had a listen to Rumours and I think the original sequence works quite well actually. It's definitely got more peaks and troughs of energy than most albums but I think it works great overall.
Your suggestions for MMT are wonderful! Strawberry Fields Forever opens the second side much better, It's All Too Much as the penultimate track on the lp feels much more climactic, and having You Know My Name on the single makes much more sense (while also making Baby You're A Rich Man feel like less of a little punt at the end). This makes the bonus single a fun extra as opposed to essential piece of the album. Thank you so much, I'll be keeping these changes and will credit you when I post it on the blog : )

Good point about making "The Chain" the closer. I still like "Gold Dust Woman" as the closer because it ends the record on a somber note, in reflection of the breakups and tensions going on then within Fleetwood Mac. Shawn R., Mo-Mutt Music

You know, I never thought about sequencing either, but in some way, I think alot of us did without knowing it. We'd put on the record but jump from one song to the other, from most to least favourite or even skip songs we didn't like. I think somewhere, in a box, I still have Rumours on vinyl.

These are just getting better and better: entertaining and informative. And probably because I'm less familiar with Fleetwood Mac than I am the Beatles, it's much more of an education for me.
By the way, I've been meaning to ask… Are you familiar with the podcast A History of Rock in 500 Songs? It's one of the very best of all music podcasts, especially as it progresses through the story. And it has the bonus of being politically progressive, which I think can be unusual when it comes to looking at the history of rock.

sheesh lyndsey must have a big ego to wear that annie hall on a bad day look.
I think it's a good idea for you to do track by track with rumours. there's plenty to chew on and it's success in the new vinyl age is major. abby got coerced into talking about it and just gave a marvelously structured argument.
my issue is that rumours has a big reputation for being a car crash breakup album but the music, good music, doesn't reflect the anguish it purports to illustrate. with John Lennon and the plastic ono band you get disintegration and resistance and it's in the music. with mccartney 1 you get a fracture in someone's life reflected in the nature of the album as he tries to hold on. smashing pumpkins adore is full of grief and loss: it's in the very grooves. in no way am i claiming that rumours doesn't contain musicianship or songcraft but it's status to me rests on an almost disingenuous promotion. some great songs to come though second news is a bit light for me.
i've seen the piano correspondent truly for what she is, a seductive girl: she even turned down the lights!😮
