    How long is a piece of string? It's sort of like a drive belt. It depends on how much it has been stretched.

    Yes thank you it was just stuck on the 2 towels. Do you remember the lifter bores the oils holes were on the outside and the lifter oil holes were lined up on them facing outward right? unlike the regular Harley book says face oil holes on lifers all face inward? Again thanks

    • @CrackerJackMechanic
      @CrackerJackMechanic 5 дней назад

      I don’t think it matters as there is a channel/groove machined around the lifter body to allow oil, it’s more just for a better direct feed I imagine. It used to matter more on old shovels. new stuff not so much. 👍🏼

    Shouldn't you let the first pushrod bleed down completely before you adjust the second pushrod (inlet and exhaust valve on the same cylinder) because you can get valve kiss (the two valves touch each other) and end up with a bent valve.

    • @CrackerJackMechanic
      @CrackerJackMechanic 29 дней назад

      Good question. and it doesn’t t lift enough to worry about, it’s bleeding down as soon as you start preloading and by the time you start adjusting the second one you won’t get interference. Maybe on a really high lift cam which would require head work. If you are concerned you can wait til the adjusted pushrod is loose, to do the second one. I’ve never had any trouble

      @CrackerJackMechanic Месяц назад

      yes indeed you are correct sir! I have this noted in another video. It is often overlooked and sometimes tightening isn’t possible without replacement of the old bolt, as it get a “notch” worn into it and prevents it from turning in, so as to make difficult to tighten. I’ve seen them worn so bad the shift shaft need replacement! and that then requires transmission disassembly. Thanks for checking out my video!

      Hey! Glad you found this older video. I have been meaning to revisit the information and kinda of include my origin story as well as thoughts on it today in a more current context and perspective. The career of motorcycle mechanics is indeed rewarding as well as cool 😎 for the most part. topics to consider dealerships vs. aftermarket shops and overall expectations for income. I hope the school curriculum includes these topics although they are subject to opinions. I would like to see the industry wages come up some. There is room for opportunity and advancements can come with time and experience. often times you will work on more than just motorcycles, so keep that in mind when looking for places to work. Seasonal layoffs can be a reality in winter months or off-seasons should also be considered. I have worked in depth and experienced many of these different situations, that come with winter months that include snow. And with most mechanic jobs/careers tools will be an added expense to consider. Even with the supply of lower cost quality tools, it adds up quickly!

    Excellent video. In the process of upgrading my 2003 FXSTI cam chain tensioners to the hydraulic kit, and plan on using SE adjustable push rods. The key thing I was trying to confirm was the 0.200 spec for the stock lifters. Now I know that i need to adjust to 0.100. Since I have the cam chest open, I'm also thinking of installing the Andrews TW21 cam. Question: Should I replace the stock lifters? Really don't want to if it is not needed. Bike only has 18K on it.

    • @CrackerJackMechanic
      @CrackerJackMechanic 3 месяца назад

      Thanks for you comment! I appreciate it. With only 18k on the bike, the lifters are likely just fine. It is common practice to just replace the cams during upgrade, depending on budget. with higher miles it becomes more questionable, and recommended to replace them.

    I liked your video. I understand the whole concept, but the reason you are long with 4 full turns is do the math. 32 tpi. 1" divided 32 is 0.03125, times 4 turns gives you 0.125 so if your shooting for 0.100 you will be 0.025 long its no big deal because they call for 4 turns. But if you're dead set on .100 just do 3.5 turns or 3 flats which will give you .109 Excellent video for someone who wants to do this themself.

    • @CrackerJackMechanic
      @CrackerJackMechanic 4 месяца назад

      thanks for the explanation… I liked your comment, and am well versed in why. if you know the tpi… and often times you don’t or know who’s pushrods are in a motor… and finding information can be present difficulties . A thread pitch gauge is useful if you have one, which I do, again not always close by. the point, which, is how easy figuring this out is without knowing what pushrods you have, or their respective top. by simply doing the measurements you can get them where you need or want them set It’s something I was often asking myself when information wasn’t available with an online search. Long and short term his method works anytime you lack the information.

    So although my wheel spins freely when torqued, its lack of end play is not good?? I have maybe .001. The bearings and races look good after cleaning. I've always had the dealership do all my work, but now that iv been doing my own ive noticed a lot of improper and lazy stuff. 1999 Electra glide ultra classic

    • @CrackerJackMechanic
      @CrackerJackMechanic 5 месяцев назад

      Appreciate your inquiry. A clearance of .001" might be too tight. As the bearings heat up, that minimal clearance may disappear. When establishing endplay, simulate torque to obtain an accurate reading for certainty. Perhaps .001" isn't the ideal recommendation. Ensure precision in the setup; your safety is at stake when riding. Just a heads-up: many sealed wheel bearings typically operate with around .003" clearance. It's valuable to comprehend the workings of these components. Engaging in your own maintenance is an effective way to grasp the intricacies of the process.

      Thanks for your comment. Someone else also mentioned this, is there one in particular that you found annoying? I am new to the editing process and will do better with good feedback. Thanks!

      It was a pleasure to be a part of this particular piece. There aren’t many like Evel Knievel; he was indeed legendary. Good on you for sharing the experience of bike building with your son, creating core memories that will last a lifetime! Take pictures or some videos! or both!! you won’t regret having them later. 👍🏼
