  • Starting Up a Fresh Ironhead Sportster Engine
The engine rebuild was completed a few years ago, and it has sat waiting. Now that the project has started again, it was decided we should hear the engine run before proceeding with the build.

Sweet sounds! I just finished putting a 76 Ironhead together, in the frame and ready to rock. What is the best procedure for the very first start up on a fresh rebuild? How do you insure/ avoid a " dry start" ? I'm going to assume, fill oil tank, pull spark plugs, squirt a little oil in the cylinders, crank it over until the oil pressure light goes out, replace plugs, fire up??? Yes? Anything else I should know? I spent too much time and effort to screw this up now. Thanks in advance.

if it’s fresh, i don’t squirt oil into cylinders. have a fresh oil supply, you can crank engine over with the plugs out, and i will sometime loosen a rocker shaft bolt on top end and make sure oil is present while running (by doing so, you have a controlled leak where you can see oil coming out so you kinda know you have enough pressure and oil is moving.) also remove oil still cap and make sure oil returns to engine. start, don’t rev, keep ot running with choke, let it heat cycle for three minutes while checking around the engine. do not rev up the engine during the first couple three minutes cycles
