thanks for your support Kenneth! or should i say… Mahalo 🤙
I own 1998 FLHTC that has just over 100,000 miles it. And it looks great not planning on changing it anytime soon. Bike is in really good shape. Almost like new. Love my EVO.
Long Live the EVO! I like em
@@CrackerJackMechanic I have a '98 FLHT w/100K and a 2015 FLTRX. I like them both but if I only could have one, I'd keep my Evo. Just love that bike.
Great vid subscribed 👊👍

Good morning 🌅, I am in the process of changing my belt , the previous owner had had the belt too tight, it’s only just done over 48,000 miles, The bike has not been serviced properly, And I’ve got to change both pulleys as well, France.
💯👍🏼
Currently I have 101,000 miles on my belt and looks great. It all depends how hard you ride... and the amount of tension you put on it
And whether or not one lives on a dirt/sand/gravel road. :)
Its really last that long?
I means this isnt timing belt but a drive belt thats expose to dirt gravel and asphalt...also sunlight and freezing snow....
I just got my 1st Harley cruizer. 2014 ultra ltd. Freaked out when I realized you have to gut the primary drive unit to change the belt. Yike's. Got a sigh of relief when you mentioned to expect near 160,000 miles out of a belt. Mine has 65,000 mi. Glad I found your video on this. Thanks.
And you have to drop the swing arm as well.
@@graemedalgleish8944 No you don't
You'll be fine, just don't drop the clutch from a stop to do a burnout that's what broke mine
@@JohnSmith-de2mz actually you do. Unless you have a belt with a splice in it.
@@graemedalgleish8944 Not on A Dyna you don't ruclips.net/video/mF00afTvFZA/видео.html
appreciate 👌🏾
You’re welcome!✌🏼
I have a 23 softail. My belt made a lot of nose when new and I was told by dealer that the belt is too tight from the factory on purpose to help in bedding it in. Its readjusted at the 1k. Have you ever heard of such a thing. Will that hurt the transmission bearing?
It’s unlikely to cause issue. consider it is under warranty and serviced by factory trained technicians, I would still ask for that i writing, to cover yourself for any problems down the road, if any present themselves.
It is common to setup to the tighter limits when doing a new belt installation with aftermarket belt.
My 96 sportster is still running stock belt , i was wanting to know the answer but obviously belts are way better then chains , my bike is an early belt version so the belt is wide, i notice the new bikes have way skinnier belts , is that so they will fail sooner or did harley just over kill the first versions of belt drive ?
good question! i think it a combination of some over engineering with the first ones and then better materials and engineering with later belts. i don’t know about length of service life, some are really narrow and hold up fine on lower HP bikes
I have a 1999 steelman custom bike with a s&s 110 40th anniversary special addition motor.its a daytec frame . I'm getting 135 hp to the wheel and still running the original belt. I was thinking of changing it because it's 23 years old. the bike only has 71 miles on it. I put 63 of those miles on it this year with 23 year old tires.i have new tires on the way . bike runs awesome. and rides great. but I want to switch to an open belt primary and chain drive. any suggestions?
For open belt … buy a new kit from one of the USA manufacturers… BDL etc. good idea to buy a second belt at the time of purchase so you don’t have to remember what you bought later.
I believe Zipper’s on the East coast have chain conversion kits… Google them up they have been doing good work for years
@@CrackerJackMechanic thank you so much the reply. I have been looking into bdl . But never herd of zippers. I'm going to Google them now. Thanks again
@CrackerJack Mechanic I just inherited my dads 2004 heritage. 11k miles. Stored in garage and well kept. Is age an issue to worry about on the belts?
Wouldn’t be concerned one bit. Tough stuff.
I'm about to go on a long trip (over 2k miles). My belt is 20 years old, and even though it looks great, I'm replacing it. I don't want to be 800 miles in, and bust a belt. My personal limit is going to be 10 years from here on out.
@@hawkdsl My belt was 31+ yrs old when I recently sold my bike. It still looked good and worked well.
@@vicswincki1124 So did mine, and if I had just roamed around local, I wouldn't have changed it... But I didn't want to get on the wrong side of Mr. Murphy's law. New belt is great. I got a BDL Goodyear Falcon.
✌🏼
I have a 2017 road glide with 86k miles on it. it left me stranded on the road at night. I get home and notice a lot of the teeth are stripped off my belt. what causes that you reckon? I don't ride hard and can get 24k off my rear tires.
Yikes! That is premature. I hope this isn’t too commonplace
@@CrackerJackMechanic turns out I had compound issues. My belts teeth stripped and upon replacing it I noticed the rear wheel bearings sort of seized and the axle chewed the hub. So I believe the rear wheel sort of locked up causing the belt to strip. Luckily I never felt anything other than loss of power while on the interstate. It also chewed my rr abs sensor. So I have learned a lesson… change them bearings and don’t go 86k on one set! Man, what a job that was taking the primary off and changing the belt. It wasn’t complicated but time consuming being it was my first time. Ride n wrench it, baby!!!
@@raybrdjr Yep , me too! cheers from Australia !
How long is a piece of string? It's sort of like a drive belt. It depends on how much it has been stretched.
🤣🤣👍🏼
Where can I Buy the SS bolt for the transmission lever?
I use a local bolt supply company. I'm not sure where you are located.
do you know the size of the bolt off hand.
adjust when it good &hot 2_3 hundred miles with only a stop for fuel watch hot tight it becomes no more harley specs. 4th belt at 60k all hd belts
it’s good to keep an eye on it and know what’s happening! 👍🏼
i would think age of the belt would matter more because they do weather and dry out over time
It does play a factor for sure! Regular checking is important. They don’t last forever 👍🏼
1. Does a drive belt have a mfg "date"?
2. Will they so crack between teeth?
3. Is there an after market product that will prolong the life of a belt?
4. Is there a HD product that will prolong a stock drive belt?
1. no
2. not usually
3. no
4. no
A piece of string is as long as a piece of string is 😅 1:19
My mentor journeyman used to say that! it’s true right!? 😝
@@CrackerJackMechanic I have have to say so. 😜🤪😝
Why harley davidson put a belt drive instead of chain type...
Harley Davidson changed to a belt around 1986. There are several benefits to the belt drive, including how long they last, where a well maintained chain might last 25,000 miles. I will cover the Basics in a new video-to-come.
They last longer and are quiet with less maintenance vs a chain
Take my advice with more than 50 years on the road, NEVER use anything else than the OEM Harley Davidson Rear belt ☝🏻 all other smart logo crap will make you deeply regret when they break after 3-5000 miles…trust me 😉☠️
I have had no trouble with the ones from Drag Specialties. I am a big fan of OEM for cables.
70,000 on my 03 Dyna, I broke a belt after many burnouts from a standing start, some on rough roads and wheelies. Still ride hard but no more burnouts from a stop.
You’re my kinda rider!!
