First wanna say thank you to Ryan and team for an excellent video. I’m only here because I stopped to see if I could help a guy on an older super/wide glide who was broke down in a parking lot today. His final drive belt was broken in half. Nothing I could help him with.
I just wanted to see how much of a bastard job this was. Certainly not a side of the road job. Confirms my feeling that Harley built it’s best bike starting in 1952, the Model K. It was then modified in 1957 and renamed the Sportster. 2022 is the 70th anniversary of this bike, still in continuous production, 71 YEARS ! The first Harley with full suspension. The first Harley with foot shifting. And, you can replace the final drive belt on the side of the road, with minimal tools, if you are ever forced to ( my father kept a spare belt with him on his many cross-country road trips, just in case, so he wouldn’t get stranded on his Sportster, which he never had a breakdown on, btw ). I personally have ridden over 800 miles in one day ( 1700 miles in 3 days total ) on a Sportster with no issues to bike or rider.
Model K / Sportster, greatest Harley of all time, that’s why it is still with us today.

Ryan great video. A couple points. I purchased the tool instead of using the wood. It only cost $39 I bought it plus the tool to hold the cam gear just to have in my tool box if I ever need them. I know that this is anal but when changing my primary oil my clutch cover bolts got rounded off (maybe my fault for not having a good Torx or HD tighten the hell out of them when they did my last service. I replaced the bolts and kept the good ones for shares. I tried like hell to remove the bad bolt, I finally removed the outer primary to lay flat and the sucker came right out. Oh don't ask about the oil filter, they must have used an impact on it. Sorry to go on but I've started doing my own service. I was just lazy plus when I bought my 12 Limited I got the 3 year service package I didn't pay for squat for service or parts. My dealer Or Harley don't offer that anymore. TTFN

I want to start by saying that this was a great video! Although I am a bit confused as to why you couldn't just put a 1/4" extension on your Allen socket to remove the starter bolt(s). Welding all the crap together seems unnecessary, however if it works it works. Thanks for the video, definitely helpful!

If you look at the spacing of the bolt against the casing there is very little room. Maybe with a slightly longer alan head you might be able to do it.

Hey guys this a great video. Nice step by step. Only one thing I would add, at the 26:15 min mark while putting the clutch inspection plate back on you say to torque 74-108, but you did not specify that now you are using inch pounds and not foot pounds. Mechanics will pick it up, but it could be confusing to some. Please do not misunderstand, it is a great video, very informative.

Thanks for the video, very good visual aid along the FSM. Managed to loosen the starter bolts on 2014 Softail without removing oil tank. Tip: remove battery, then the plastic tray under it, and you can feel the rear starter bolt just under the metal tab. Get 1/4 allen with swivel in through the battery compartment and feed long 1/4 extension from intake side to join in there. Took me 5 minutes elaborating and 1 minute doing, definitelly better than removing the oil tank.

Exactly - I've seen it take a guy 19 hours doing it the first time with his service manual. He was taking his time obviously and borrowing tools throughout which slowed him down but the amount of steps to simply replace a belt is ridiculous. Especially removing the primary drive completely off the bike and the swingarm WTF. So stupid. But great video explaining the ridiculousness involved to replace something that should take 30 minutes if their engineers weren't morons.

I have to compliment you on this video like everyone else, it is very informative and very helpful to actually see it performed rather than read how to do it. You mention torquing the 5 primary cover bolts to 84-105 that would have to be in inch pounds. Can the shifter lever shaft be installed through the primary covers after they are assembled or should it be installed at the same time as the starter? The video showed removing it the same time the starter was removed but never mentioned it or showed it being installed during reassembly, just curious if it matters.

After watching several of your videos related to inner, and outer primary cover removal. I left the derby cover on, drained the oil out then removed the outer primary cover in one piece.

Back in ‘84 I used a piece of wood to jam between the motor sprocket and clutch housing. I didn’t notice a small splinter of wood and of course it ended up plugging my oil return to the motor. I was on a run and checked my oil and there was none. I’m surprised I didn’t burn up that motor but it kept on running...the good/bad old days...thanks for the great videos amigo 😎

  • @bushmandread

A text message on the video said on the Softail you have to remove the oil tank. I suppose that's to get to the starter bolts. But on my 95 Fat Boy I removed the inner fender cover which let me get to the rear starter bolt. Tedious, 1/4 turn on an allen wrench at a time but I got it. Then used a straight hex with a 1/4 socket and extension to get the front one.

when do you recommend changing the final drive belt (miles/age)? I have a 2012 ultra classic with 40K miles. when should I look at changing it? I'd rather change it on my terms rather than have it break while on the road. thanks and love the videos.

    • @RyanUrlacher
      @RyanUrlacher  7 лет назад +1

They can go for very high miles. Just inspecting them is the key when servicing/inspecting your bike. There are general times HD recommends for different years/models.........I'd just look in your owner's manual. Likely, you can go even past what they recommend. they don't fail that often unless they get some sort of damage or sharp rock or something stuck in them.

I'm wanting to switch my front sprocket from a 32 tooth to a 34 tooth for better interstate cruising. Is there enough adjustment to use a stock belt or do I need a longer belt?

    • @floydholsinger1598

I done it on 2012 streetglide kept the stock belt ... hiway rpm went down about 500rpm but I switched back to stock because it was tall and hard to keep in 1st during stop n go traffic ...kept on needing the clutch below 5mph and you kinda have to let up on ur throttle when ur riding in groups because the rider in front will be shifting gears b4 you and u need to slow up so u dont hit him while you wait for him to get back up to speed...than ur out of "sync" when you have to shift ... hiway it's great
