It does not matter how many times you have tightened a fastener, USE A TORQUE WRENCH, there is a reason.

Little advise, because even those poly hamers can still mushroom the threads,
Put the nut on 3-4 threads and hit the nut

I've owned several bikes and just realized the tool bag that comes with the bikes has all the tools you need. One of the wrenches inside your bag is good for the rear axel, front axel, front fork.... fYI

Should use the jack to lift and lower motorcycle instead of struggling with wheel.
Caliper should be removed before wheel.

I have to tell you regardless of the various comments you have made me challenge myself in replacing my rear. I had my front replaced on a road trip 3k ago and it cost me $448. So here in Canada Harley has their 15% hidden surcharge on tires and installed was going to cost me $580 and taxes and enviro fees. I have ordered a tire for the rear and with your video I will be saving about 50% or more. I have lots of time and less money.
Appreciate you taking the time and effort. Cheers

Great Video Ryan. I liked the tip about the belt tension. Just to share a tip. To align everything to install the axle I roll the tire onto a small Craftsman floor jack, like your orange one. Jack up the wheel into the fender until the axle holes are aligned with swing arm holes instead of lowering the bike jack. The wheel remains at the perfect height and no need to hold it. Leaves hands free to effortlessly start pushing the axle in and add the parts as the axle travels through. The wheel is on a jack with wheels so is easily moved if needed. No need for pry bar, screw driver or hammer. Love the vids and podcasts.

Thanks for sharing with the community. I too have done it that way. My other small jack was out of commission. Ride safe brother. Gonna redo this video to reflect such. Always nice to have options with minimal equipment I guess.

  • @RyanUrlacher
    @RyanUrlacher  10 лет назад

Congrats on the purchase!! Make sure and inspect them thoroughly. Look on the sidewalls for any signs of cracks or rotting. If you are going to run those tires, the best thing is to have a certified Harley mechanic inspect them if you're not sure. I know tires are expensive, but your life really depends on them on a motorcycle. You REALLY want to make sure they are prefect or replace them for your safety.

Great work and great video. I would recommend cleaning the axle and inside of the bearings and adding some fresh anti-seize. On one occasion mine had seized to the bearings and I had to beat the axle out with a mallet. It added at least an hour to what was a very frustrating process. Tire changes are a little scary until you've done one. When you've seen it done, it's not that scary any more. When you realize how much money you can save, it's worth every minute of your effort.

If you remove the left side muffler so the axel can come out and go back in straight and use a floor jack to jack up your wheel, it makes it much easier to get everything lined back up. Belt, spacers, caliper etc. Brake caliper goes back on swing arm without removing mounting arm. No pry bars or hammers are needed and your pipes and other things don’t get scratched or dented up.

I put a floor jack under the rear wheel to take the tension off the axle, that way you can raise or lower the wheel as necessary. Also those of us with stock mufflers, if you remove the bottom shock bolts, you can jack up the rear wheel and slide the axle out without removing the mufflers.

Thanks for the video. I have done my '04 Dyna Super Glide before so I used the video as a refresher when I changed tires on my new (used) '06 Wide Glide, The Bike only has 14, 000 miles on it but the axle was a bear to remove. I soaked it with penetrating oil, used an old nut on the left side and had to pound the living daylights out of it. It was a corroded mess. Emery cloth and some elbow grease solved the problem and I reassembled it with a good dose of Anti-Seize. I'll be throwing a few shekels your way for the video.

Thanks for another great "how to" video. I'll be replacing my rear tire and brakes in about a month and this video will really help. I've got a low profile jack that I'm hoping I can use to lift the rear tire up to the bike for re-install. Another tip - instead of letting the calipers hang like that, use a bungee cord and hang them up and out of the way. This takes the stress off the hydraulic tubes and fittings. Again, great video.

Grest video, very helpful, I would like to point out one helpful hint if I may, not everyone has a nice clean work area, It is a very good idea to clean your axle and appy a fresh new coat of antisieze compound to ur axle, just because if you set it down you may get grit n dirt on it... so please dont be offended by this tip, you do a great job. I really enjoyed ur video. Thank you!

I enjoyed this video but thought Id give you a tip that may help you line things up for your axel in the future. Get yourself a couple brass drifts a little smaller than you axel. One maybe 6 or 8 inches long. Another about 10 inches and use them instead of a screw driver. They are softer than the metal on the bike and you can mate one up with the axel once started on the left side and strike it instead of your axel with the hammer. The other drift used to line up things on the right side in place of a screw driver. Because of the diameter of the drift things won't shift around as much on you and your hammer wont come in contact with any of your chrome. Hope this helps. Also if you play with you lift you can position the rear wheel down to take pressure off the axel and push it out by hand. Then raise it up to get the wheel out.

Great Video! Especially for guys not so mechanically inclined. However, I find it easier to maneuver the rear wheel with a floorjack cupping the tire. It allows you those small incremental ups and downs effortlessly. Just FYI.

Excellent video!! I saved $250-300 doing this myself and not hard at all!! I only had to purchase the 36mm wrench for the rear axle nut bc it's huge!! It was $12 online and got a great price on tires also online!! Some of the cashola saved by riders should go to support these guys bc HD dealers want an arm, leg, and usually the first born to work on our bikes!!A few FYI's, I just did both tires on my 2013 Ultra, the machined lines on my spacers, front & back, go towards the inside. If you're working alone, I also used a platform jack to raise and lower the tires bc it is an awkward angle! DO NOT have both tires off at the same time using a center jack like this! I was lucky in that I had put boards under the front tire when I removed the rear and the bike did shift! So their are differences but very minor! Just pay attention when doing the work yourself! Also can't stress enough about using the wratchet straps to hold the bike secure, excellent info! Thanks again for putting these videos up as it saves riders a lot of dinero!!Ride on..........

Idk if you still check this page for comments, but what do you do when the back tire is out of alignment before you get a chance to mark the cams? Rolling the bike backwards down the driveway it rolls a few feet then it's like the brakes are dragging. Rolling forward is fine...sort of. Put it in the air, took bags off, spun tire backwards and the tire hits the top rung of belt, even causing the belt to lift and twist. I thought spinning tire forward corrected the problem...but that's because the belt guard was keeping me from seeing how the tire is catching the bottom rung of belt, but seems to not be near as much was when spinning it backwards. Every video and link talks about marking the cams to keep in line with the weld tabs. If you need to loosen or tighten belt you rotate the cams equal to each other. However, I can't find anything about starting from a misalignment without any cam marks. 2003 RK.

I remove the rear caliper before I remove the tire -- no more hanging up. Reinstall it after the wheel is back where it belongs. Also to lift the wheel I use a floor jack. Allows for precise control of the vertical movement of the tire.

I’m going to contribute to ur site so you can buy yourself a 36 mm socket rather than using a crescent wrench. All in all very informative video. I’ll remember to take the brake caliper off first before removing the tire. Thank you !

Lower the bike closer to the floor and you can use a tire spoon or pry bar to take pressure off axle.

For future removal projects.... you can put the tire on a floor jack and use the jack to raise and lower the tire into place precisely and not make you wish you had four hands!

Ryan Urlacher Sure is. I spent years struggling to do this myself. Same theory, wood blocks, feet, ammo cans, small children, you name it... (ok maybe not ammo cans haha) Then last year I was changing my wheel bearings and a buddy suggested the jack. Took no time, no sweat and tears and no tools thrown across the garage. Wish I'd learned this trick years ago! Good videos! Now you got me considering a 2014 SG!

Thanks for the prompt reply. By day I work in an optical lab measuring everything into the 100ths. So I usually measure things on my bike tight because I just don't know any better. But I really appreciate the experience guys like you and Moonfleet41 bring to RUclips to share with the rest of us. Great vid on the oil change as well. I left a comment there too.
