    Your 35 minute video was very thorough. You just saved this do-it-yourselfer a ton of HD dealership fees. I'm great for people like you who put useful information on RUclips. Next round is on me brother.

    Great video! I'm a certified technician and pretty much everything this guy says on this video is correct. The only thing I would recommend is removing all the fill plugs before draining the oils. Because on some rare cases the fill plugs could get seized and in some cases you might not be able to free them yourself and may have to take them to a shop. And if you drained the oil first then you will have to tow the bike to the shop.

    I really want to thank you Ryan for this informative piece. I am a 61 yr old female and have been riding since before you were born. Got my first Harley in 2007, a 2002 pearl white Road King Classic. I like to do what maintenance I can do on my own. It's all part of the experience ya know. I love the way you were very clear and to the point without a lot of excess bs. You are a great teacher and I will be watching and learning from more of your vids. Again, a heartfelt thank you.

    very well done law abiding biker.. just sold the fireblade and am picking up my hawg on monday... i have decided to settle down and had always dreaded having to pay a harley dealer tons of money for a service... i really thought it was a more excentric job.. im very thankful for this share.. im confident it will be a breeze.. i prefer to do my own services for peace of mind that its not a rush job, and you have displayed how to save money, and deliver peace of mind... will be looking u up..

    Just something I read on the internet. The 6 Speed Baker Transmission in the Harley Davidson Motorcycles uses 85/140 gear oil. After using it, I noticed a much smoother shifting. Also much much easier to select neutral from first gear. I am not a Harley Davidson technician, I did work on all types of Diesel, gasoline engines, and all types of manual transmissions that use oils. From Dexron transmission fluid to 85/140 gear oil, for over 40 + years. I am not narrow minded, I can learn from anyone. I am sharing my personal experiences with you. I personally use Mobil 1 Fully Synthetic Motor/Transmission Oils in everything I drive, or ride. Including my lawn mower!

    @donhgr....Thx for the feedback!! It is however, NOT necessary to put oil back in the new filter when putting it on. It would just make a mess anyway and spill all over. Just put the filter on and your good. After about 3 seconds after you start the bike you will have oil pressure, no problems. I guarantee I have done tons of services on Harley's and NEVER put oil in the filter. Thanks again for checking the video out!!

    Cheap trick to keep oil from the filter getting everywhere, is steal some aluminum foil from the ole lady and bend it up to make a funnel/run off, works great and less mess to clean up, love your videos, keep the rubber side down bro

      Hey Justin. Yah, we have a trick using a piece of cardboard and folding it over to make an awesome trough to run it into the pan. We forgot to put it in the video. Tin foil is great too. I would rather do everythang I can to eliminate riding in the rain

    @arnet117: Don't put any oil on the air filter or you will ruin it. The newer Harley's run a completely "dry filter". Now, if you have an older Harley then they required you put oil on them. I don't know the exact year they went to a "dry filter" system. You will have to call your dealer and check. Hope this helps and ride safe!!

    Excellent video and very clear instruction! I also noted the error in the primary cover torque specs. For those that don't read through the comments section you might want to add some text in the video at the point to note the correction.
    Beyond that I appreciate your taking the time to video the step by step process. It's answer some of the questions I had about doing the fluid changes on my bike.

    Just a tip on that Harley oil filter wrench. I used a cut off wheel to shave off about 1/8" on each side of the notch to clear the crank sensor. Makes it a lot easier to use. Without doing that, you only get about 1/8 on a turn on the filter without hitting the crank sensor. This year I'm going to try an aftermarket filter with a hex on top which you only need a socket to remove the filter. Harley should have thought of that instead of having people damage the crank sensor.

    Great video! Had the dealer do the 5,000 mile service before my trip to Colorado because I wanted the piece of mind with my first Harley, but i'll never pay that much for a glorified oil change again. Good work guys.

    @harleygeek2427; Don't put any oil on the air filter or you will ruin it. The newer Harley's run a completely "dry filter". Now, if you have an older Harley then they required you put oil on them. I don't know the exact year they went to a "dry filter" system. You will have to call your dealer and check. Hope this helps and ride safe!!

    I use foil pans for drain pans and just throw them away if they get worn out . The ones you use to cook a turkey in. Buy a cheap stack at Sam`s club or Cost co. You can crease the corner to poor it back in the container to take it to a disposle place .

    Hi Ryan, I again wanted to thank you for this series. Tackled this job today and having your step by step made the job (with proper tunes blasting) enjoyable.
    One thing I did, remembering a Buell I rebuilt years ago with the Sporty 1200, is to replace those darn Derby Torx fasteners (of course on my current bike, ended up drilling head off of one that was stuck like Chuck) with .5 inch Stainless hex screws. I actually like the industrial look they add and for 5 bucks from the local hardware store, I have screws that will be MUCH easier to take out. And, for those of you who do this, it will make starting the screws much easier.
    Next up: Tires when money loosens up a little. Watched your vid a couple of times, so should be no sweat. I no Mr. Murphy may show, but never in a hurry and always with the goal of quality.

    It would be good to mention the purpose of the cut-out in the oil filter tool because you still have to be careful of the timing sensor. However, I have a Jagg oil cooler on my 2003 Ultra Classic and it moves the oil filter more to the left side of the bike and clears the sensor. The orange sluice that H-D sells to prevent dumping oil on the front motor mount has never worked for me. The rag is probably best. My preference is to only use the synthetic for the engine. I use primary/trans oil for the rest. Great video. Very thorough.

    @lineshooter5w.....Thanks for the feedback! Yah, if your K&M filter comes with that cleaner and oil spray then it is that type of filter and you should use it. On the new Harley's the filter run dry, which means you don't put an oil spray on them. You can clean them with any type of filter cleaner. I just choose K&M brand.

    Harley Warranty: Doing these routine services on your Harley DOEN NOT void your warranty whatsoever. You just need to keep your reciepts for the oil and filters you buy and use the log in your owners manual to track the services you do. THAT is a fact and Ed "Cuz" who is my co-host on the Law Abiding Biker Podcast is a Service Advisor for our local Harley Davidson Dealership.

      Jo Couri It is not a WET type filter. you should only oil the wet filters not the dry filters like this one. If you watch again, his filter actually says: DRY TYPE ELEMENT, DO NOT OIL.

    • @RyanUrlacher
      @RyanUrlacher  9 лет назад

      Jo Couri You are incorrect Jo. Many are confused about filters like you. That's okay brother, as there are many different filters on the market.
      It totally depends on the type of filter you have Jo. You would ruin this filter if you put oil on it if it. In fact, all newer Harley's come with a stock "DRY FILTER". You absolutely should not oil it.
      I encourage everyone to do what is correct for their brand of filter. Some require oil and many don't.

    • @RyanUrlacher
      @RyanUrlacher  9 лет назад +1

    I'm a Harley authorized mechanic. Decent video. 2 things. 1. You should put 3 and a half quarts of oil and check it from there. Putting all 4 quarts will most likely end up over filling the oil tank. 2. If you don't bring your bike to the dealership trust me you'll miss out a lot of issues I would save you money on by finding them before they turn into a major money issue. Not to mention possible issue that could leave you broken down on the side of the road. Just my 2 cents. See you soon.

    Yes 103 and 110 hold the same amount. Some years back Harley started using the same oil in all 3 components. Guess they wanted people new to Harley to be able to buy only one fluid instead of three. Don't want to start a dreaded oil thread but if your bike has a difficult time slipping into neutral try a dedicated transmission fluid like Redline heavy duty.

    For the oil filter drain funnel, just use a plastic gallon milk jug. Use a utility knife to shape it for your needs. I have one made custom, for my mower, each of the different dirt bikes and one for my road glide. Just label what it fits and stack them up. Works for custom fill funnels too

    Your videos have made some jobs easier faor me I admit. My advice to anyone changing the three oil lcations on a Harley is to only use detergent oil in your engine and for your primary only use a NON detergent oil because detergent oil can dissolve the plate material from your clutch plates if used in the primary. Also only use NON detergent oil in your transmission due to the fact it isn't a filtering assembly. If you want to make your Harley last use 80w in your primary and transmission

    • @DMD81773
      @DMD81773 5 лет назад

      Motorcycles dont use getergent oil like in a car. They dont have the same additives that car oil does. The primary and transmission can take the same oil. For example honda uses 1 oil for all 3 and u can use motorcycle oil and some also use deisel engine oil.

    Great video! It helped me a lot. Thank you! Just one thing, for the next oil change I would first make sure that you are able to remove primary cover. Bolts were stripped and very tight on mine, last change was done by HD dealer, of course "mechanic" didn't report stripped bolts. I was not able to remove it, or to put the oil back, had to remove entire big cover and take it to the mechanic shop, they were not able to remove bolts from primary cover. Later, my friend welded new bolts on top of stripped bolts on primary cover and finally he was able to remove it. This process damaged primary cover, and had to buy new seal for the big cover. Huge pain in butt.

      ScreamingEagle Great tip! It's a good idea to make sure they will come loose. We've had personal experience with mechanics over-tightening the primary bolts.

    Ryan, you guys do fantastic work for us. Not all of us out here are mechanically inclined, but by watching some of your videos, I have learned a lot of things that I can do myself. I've referred several time back to your videos when I needed to work on my Ultra. Keep up the good work. RIde safe
