Ryan: Watching an oil change on anything can be very boring. But you make it entertaining! Thank you for what you do and thank you for your service! Stay safe Brother!
I know I’m late but it’s never too late to say, “Thank you.” After dreaming for years, eight months ago I bought my dream bike, 2012 Harley Road King Classic with 8k miles on it for $7,500. I’ve never been a handy guy, I didn’t listen to my father, but I can do this and save $350. I’m grateful. If I can learn more from you I’ll be a happy camper. Thanks again and I thank you for your service. I’d be honored to meet you one day!
I put exactly 3 quarts in the crankcase in my 2014 Street glide ever since day one. I run it halfway up the scale on the dipstick Zero issues. I also run Amsoil but I use their primary and trans Specific bottles and run their motor oil in my crank case.
I got a 16 electra glide just did my oil i put 3 qts in rode home from my buddys house highway and all 3 quarters from the top so gonna keep an eye on it but dont want oil drippin out the air cleaner haha
Ryan, Your "non-professional" videos still look better than most on the interwebs. Lots of the production techniques are still there, attention to detail, loads of info, stuff like that. Thanks brother, really enjoyed this one.
+davedeja Wow, thanks so much! That is really nice to hear. I really try to have the content there and still edit some even when not using the professional cams and lighting. Thanks for taking the time to let me know. Ride safe!
Hi Ryan, I know this video was posted six years ago but tonight I change the oil in my 2016 Road King. I did it with confidence based on your video! I will be supporting your channel in the future. Thank you for all the great teaching that you put out there for us riders! God bless you!
I am getting a 2000 road king classic with 843 miles. This Video should apply as well I think. First time Harley owner. Thanks for content like this. I am 67 years old.

Made that look easy ! Good job guys...and I agree, using the one Amsoil syn for all three holes. When making long trips carrying ONE spare quart of oil is a lot easier than three different oils. If you have 3 to 4 guys riding, that’s plenty oil to get you where you need to go in an emergency fix !

Thanks all of you for all the videos. The way you are explaining is very good. I have bought me a Harley Davidson Road King. Greetings from good old Germany
The first video I saw was your long trip with many great stops. Other LEO's joined in and rode a while. I retired after 30 with Mobile PD. Used the Drop money and bought an 08 Ultra and I love it. I don't like the ABS. But I enjoy all your videos. Thanks for this one. I just got a service, battery, and new front tire. $779.00. I know what to do now. Be safe my friend...
Good video and I always change my own oil to save big bucks. The last time, I went with Red Line synthetic fluids and am happy with their product. Before that, I always used Mobil 1. Another option but a little pricey is a K&N permanent oil filter which you just clean out after every oil change. The design of it also acts as a bit of a secondary oil cooler because of the ribs incorporated in the design.

I was watched the video you uploaded on Sept 8th 2015 then I went to your page and watched the intro video. I then went back to the previous video to see if this was the same person; it was but it looked as if you had shed 100lbs! Wow! That's the video I want to see! How much did you lose and HOW??? I'm subscribing and am an avid advocate of legal riding & saving greenbacks for upgrades. Awesome job on your page and losing the weight! I'm all in!
+edward ford Thanks Edward...thanks for sharing that little story. So, I lost a total of 55 lbs and am holding steady for over a year now. I wish I had a super workout program or something, but not the case. Just started eating healthier and watching calorie intake.....I know, my wife hates that is all I have to do. There is one safe way to use that oil filter wrench to tighten the filter. It is always a challenge for me to get that 1/2 a turn or so on the filter when the gasket contacts the mount. I spin the filter down until the gasket touches the mount, then back the filter off 1/2 turn. Put the wrench on the filter with the notch in-line with the crank position sensor wire and turn it 1 turn until the notch is aligned with the wire again. The filter has now been tightened 1/2 turn past contact.

Yo Ryan great video, I'm changing all 3 holes this weekend. I'm going with Amsoil. You guys rock. I listen to your podcast all the time. I'm a little short, but I'm going to become a patreon. As a retired Gas Man you shouldn't stack so much crap in front of your water heater and furnace. It blocks your combustion air. Later dudes.
That warranty law is awesome to know, I was never aware of that. Although, on my 06 Road King, I always did my own services, but mainly because I didn't have the money at that time to have someone do the services for me. I started having a mechanic (Not HD) do them after I hit the 50000 mile mark about 4 years back, but, I also had the Stage 2 kit done. With the Amsoil I used in it since the 1000 mile service everything looked fine. Planning on buying a new HD this year, so, I may have HD do the expensive bend over service for the 1000 and 5000 due to time restraints for a trip.

Love the channel and content. I have seen a few of your service videos and noticed that you have used both Syn3 and Amsoil. My question is... What is the better of the 2 for a TC103 in Florida weather? Thanks brother!
Same. We get over 100 degrees here in the summer and below freezing in the winter. We run the Amsoil year around and when riding cross-country for many hours a day.
Great video.....I like your Titan bike lift...are you happy with that? what is the exact model you have...need to get one of those to lift my Harley FLHTK....thx
We love the Titan lift. Several of us have them. As you can imagine, the lift in the LAB studio gets lots of use and its holding up well. I have the TITAN SDML-1000D-XLT and added the bulldog wheel chock to it. Here is a link for the left table: bit.ly/2lsraEi and here is one for the wheel chock: bit.ly/2lxRYTG
Great vid. I'll definitely be doing my own fluid changes from now on. Just bought an 09 road king and have been thinking about changing the handlebars on it. What bars are those? They look great.
I've been looking at a PurePower Lifetime oil filter. Kind of interesting as you can clean the stainless steel woven screen. The screen and neodymium magnets are suppose to keep the oil cleaner. Its got a stainless steel bypass valve and spring. The filer costs around $219. That's the draw back. What I have found about the filter it really doesn't do a hole lot more for the bikes performance. I was wondering if anyone has used the PurePower oil filter and what you think about it.
Ryan, Thanks again for all the great videos. I even bought a Biker Gripper off your site. I love it bro. One quick question, when checking the levels on your transmission and your engine oil, do you screw the engine oil cap all the way in, and leave the transmission cap loose? Lastly, that is one bad ass lift. Lenny
That has changed from year to year Leaonard. And models are different. You'll have to check your specific year and model. **Thanks for you support brother and glad you like the Biker Gripper: shop.lawabidingbiker.com/collections/bikergripper
Thanks! How often do you need to check the condition of the cam tensioners? I read a lot about issues when those "shoes" wear... Seams to be a Harley weak point? And also how often must one check the primary chain tensioner??

The reason why Harley changed their service intervals for the three hole service. Is for EPA carbon footprint credits. Years ago all the manuals always said change all three holes at 5000 miles. That’s exactly how I do it no matter what Harley manual says. Nothing has changed mechanically. Oil has definitely gotten better over the years but there’s no way in hell I’m doing transmission fluid change at 20,000 miles. It’s not in Harley Davidson’s best interest to have our bikes last as long as possible.

I did an oil change on my 2016 heritage, by draining like it says to do seems that only drains the reservoir though 'cause it only takes 2 qts to fill , is there another drain for the engine?

If your don't have a lift and the ability to chock the front tire to keep the bike straight up or vertical can you still change the oil and get it to drain most of it from being on the kickstand?

Hey Ryan, What is your opinion on using an Automotive Filter on a Harley engine? Just curious. I've been running Bosch 3330 Premium filters on my 18 1200 Custom. Right now I am trying an STP Extended Life filter(Gold box).
I honestly don't see a problem as long as it fits correctly. The car filters and HD filters are propably made by the same manufacturer. Ride safe & Ride Often! You can change your oil anytime you want w/o affecting your warranty regardless of make or model. You are Federally protected by the Magnuson Moss Warranty Act. Same for cars etc.....they can't legally void your warranty for such. Just keep your receipts, date etc that you changed it.
I run it halfway up the scale on the dipstick
Zero issues.
The commentary by Ryan makes this 3 hole oil change video my favorite. Keep up the good work brother!
Finally a guy who doesnt tell you to waste money buying new gaskets when they arent needed
I like the simple info ,cous knows how to take the hot oil like a man!!! Please keep it coming.

Thanks for the shout out!

That is awesome!
Thank you and thanks for sharing that info.

I really watch carb intake too of course...... Ride on brother and thanks for the shout out.

I run mobile-1 20w50 full syn in my engine and primary. My trans I use mobile-1 75w90 gear oil
Thank you ,Thank you, You guys answered my questions

Great video, can you do this with the kick stand? Don’t have a nice lift
Yes you can! You'll just want to level the bike out to drain all the oil. You can hold it level for a bit. Just a simple wheel chock would work great too.
Ryan Urlacher thanks for getting back to me, you are very knowledgeable and a great communicator!

Question: Does the bike need to be level for all oil checks or on side kick stand for checking oil crank case etc? Thank you in advance.
Level for the primary and transmission. The engine oil can be check either level or on the jiffy stand.

Great vid
Love the channel and content. I have seen a few of your service videos and noticed that you have used both Syn3 and Amsoil. My question is... What is the better of the 2 for a TC103 in Florida weather? Thanks brother!
Same. We get over 100 degrees here in the summer and below freezing in the winter. We run the Amsoil year around and when riding cross-country for many hours a day.
Are you saying we can use motor oil in the transmission too? I am using amsoil 20-50 synthetic in the primary and motor
Yes, we use Amsoil synthetic on all 3 holes. Engine, trans, primary. good go to. Dealerships do the same. shop.lawabidingbiker.com/search?q=amsoil
Great content Ryan. Question; What lift is that?
Nevermind. Found your video on the Titan 1000D-XLT.

Ryan Urlacher Thanks Ryan. It’s now on my list!
So you put oil in the transmission?
I'm trying to find out exactly where the oil tank drain plug is on a 1999 Electra Glide Ultra Classic Twincam engine
Hey there guys, I have a 2014 softail slim. I am very interested in the maintenance videos. Is there a link I can go to for the purchase??
certainly --> www.lawabidingbiker.com/buyvideos
Great vid. I'll definitely be doing my own fluid changes from now on. Just bought an 09 road king and have been thinking about changing the handlebars on it. What bars are those? They look great.
Cycle Smith Bagger Bars. 16"
We also sell a video on how to install these if you are interested. www.lawabidingbiker.com/store
Ryan,
Thanks again for all the great videos.
Cheers
Thanks! How often do you need to check the condition of the cam tensioners? I read a lot about issues when those "shoes" wear... Seams to be a Harley weak point? And also how often must one check the primary chain tensioner??

Sir what kind of oil did you put on a transmission and do you have to fill up separately?
The reason why Harley changed their service intervals for the three hole service. Is for EPA carbon footprint credits.
Years ago all the manuals always said change all three holes at 5000 miles. That’s exactly how I do it no matter what Harley manual says.
Nothing has changed mechanically. Oil has definitely gotten better over the years but there’s no way in hell I’m doing transmission fluid change at 20,000 miles. It’s not in Harley Davidson’s best interest to have our bikes last as long as possible.
Thanks 👍
Can a 2004 Softail standard be done on the kickstand, or does it have to be on a lift?
I see where some videos say that the 3 compartments should get different wt. oil. What do you say to that?
20-50 Synthetic in all three holes.

I did an oil change on my 2016 heritage, by draining like it says to do seems that only drains the reservoir though 'cause it only takes 2 qts to fill , is there another drain for the engine?
None that we are aware of. Is you bike upright when you drain it? It may not all drain out on the kick stand.
Thanks 4 the reply. I had it on the kickstand, next time I'll get it upright see if it helps

Titan left. We sell them. Here is a link to our store: shop.lawabidingbiker.com/collections/lifts

You can change your oil anytime you want w/o affecting your warranty regardless of make or model. You are Federally protected by the Magnuson Moss Warranty Act. Same for cars etc.....they can't legally void your warranty for such. Just keep your receipts, date etc that you changed it.
