How to Service your Harley Davidson | Complete M8 Touring 3-Hole Oil Change

In this video, we will show you how we do an easy DIY complete 3-hole oil change on a Harley Davidson Milwaukee 8 in a 2020 Road Glide Special!

In our last oil change video, we completed the service on a lift, but this time we do it right on the ground using a jiffy stand, which we have found to actually be EASIER! Follow along step-by-step while we show you how we change the oil and clean the air filter while we're at it!
TOOLS/ITEMS NEEDED (Stock Hardware)
-Oil filter wrench
-Primary funnel
-Drain pan
-New O-rings (recommended)
-5/8-inch socket
-3/8 inch Ratchet with long extension
-T27 torque bit
-Socket wrench
-Torque wrench (recommended)
-Primary cover gasket (recommended)
-Flathead Screwdriver
-Rags to wipe up spills
WHAT'S IN THE 3-HOLE OIL CHANGE KIT?
5 quarts of Maxima V-Twin 100% synthetic 20W-50 engine oil
1 quart of Maxima V-Twin mineral transmission 80W-90 oil
2 quarts of Maxima V-Twin mineral primary oil
1 ProFilter wrench-removal premium oil filter: black or chrome
3 drain plug O-rings
QUICK CHANGE KIT
5 quarts of Maxima V-Twin 100% synthetic 20W-50 engine oil
1 ProFilter wrench-removal premium oil filter: black or chrome
1 drain plug O-ring
BASIC OIL CHANGE STEPS:
-Warm the bike up to operating temperature to ensure all oil drains
-Park the bike in a well ventilated area and place the oil drain pan underneath the drain plugs, which are located underneath the bike on the left side (02:31-02:36)
-Remove drain plugs and let the oil drain for a few minutes
-Once most of the oil is drained, release any pressure by removing the engine and transmission dipsticks
-Clean the drain plugs and place them back in their designated holes once all oil is drained
-Drain the primary by removing the primary drain plug located on the underside of the primary below the derby cover.
-Once the primary is drained, use the primary funnel to pour 1 quart of primary oil into the primary
-Inspect the derby cover gasket, and clean or replace it as needed
-Re-install the derby cover, tightening bolts in a star pattern to ensure a uniform fit
-Pour 4 quarts of 20W-50 oil into the engine fill hole and 1 quart of 80W-90 transmission oil into the transmission fill hole (We tend to pour 1/4-1/2 quart into the oil filter as well as coat the oil filter gasket with a thin layer of oil to ensure a good seal upon installation)
-Screw in both engine and transmission dipsticks, take her for a spin, and add engine oil as needed!

I have a e-z up center stand on both my Harleys love it . It makes clean ups and oil changes way better plus fill ups at gas stations way better . Just roll it back with stand down and then ride off that’s it

Change my own all the time, but I did learn a neat trick from you about holding the bike upright with the door jam. Don't know why I didn't think of that. Always had to lift it a bit on the jack just for that part. Only little piece of information I would add is the oil dipstick has two different marking, one for upright, and one for the jiffy stand. Also screw in the oil cap for checking, but the tranny dipstick is measured not screwed in. Thanks! Hope to see you next month, the 66 trip is still on.

Figured I'd add my two cents. For the oil filter, I take a paper plate and cut a straight line across one side with a pair of scissors. Curl the plate around the filter and it funnels the oil away perfectly! Thanks for the video, love the content!

Great video guys always good to share that knowledge and help other know how to take care of their bikes. Doesn’t matter what I do every time I change my oil I make a mess of the oil filter 🤬. I second the comment someone added earlier about the apr bolts for the primary cover. I hate using the torque bits.

I have done many 3 hole oil changes on the 3 Harley Davidson touring bikes I’ve had over the years and I hate it. Changing oil on my truck is so easy with one hole in and one hole to drain. HD has finally got it right with their new Revolution Max engine with single fill and drain which is the new standard with just about every motorcycle manufacturer.
Yup, definitely not quite as simple as a truck or other bikes, but aside from the mess, no biggie.

Fellas…good video BUT as a tech here are some tips. ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS change your o-rings on your drain plugs, transmission dip stick and derby cover. For the minimal amount it costs…do it! Clean the threads of your drain plugs with a small steel brush, spray with brake cleaner and wipe clean with a lint free paper towel. Apply thread sealant to the threads of ALL of your drain plugs. Insert and tighten to 14-21ft lb torque. You’ll NEVER have a leak!!!!! I’ve never had a bike come back for a leak and I’ve done thousands of services!!! Secondly, your air filter needs to dry for longer than an hour. And it needs to be oiled prior to reinstalling. Lastly, fill your oil filter with about 2-3ozs of oil prior to installing it. Fill it when you first start your service and by the time you are ready to install it it will have soaked into the filter element and won’t spill out when installing. Also lightly coat the rubber ring on the base of the filter with oil prior to install. Remember…the oil filter only needs to be hand tight.
Thanks for the tips, Richard! We covered most of those bases, but will have to be a little more thorough when it comes to the other things. We've changed our oil this way for 10+ years and have never had issues, but one can never be too safe. We oiled the air filter and coated the ring on the oil filter and all of that good stuff.

You might want to do the first service through Harley so you’re documented. We use Maxima.
Absolute no no to tighten oil filter with a wrench. It should say it on the box. K&n had trouble years ago with cracking the oil filter housing tightening it down. It’s for removal only.

I think the beers started getting to the Gaylin man! He dropped the derby cover and I know it bothered him! Anyways I just did mine today, I use Redline oils. I wanted to see if there's a cleaner way to do the filter! I've changed my oil several times and always made a mess. I bought HD's special orange filter draining pan and even drilled holes in the old filter and I still made a mess this time around.
This is Gaylin and no on the beers but yea on the Derby. I rarely have a mess doing it the way I show in the Video. Lance and I use the same method on all oil changes. Screw driver pushing a doubles up shop towel under the filter.
What mic systems do you use? I’ve been having problems with my rode wireless go 2 for some time now and want to give something else a try.
We use the Saramonic Blink 500 pro kit. Pretty seamless at close range, but we've definitely had our fair share of issues with frequency interference and audio cut-outs etc

I recently found your channel and just subscribed to it. I purchased all the items needed to do the 3-hole change. However, when I reread the manual (2021 FLTRXSE - CVO RG) it indicates that I need to change the engine oil at 5k, the primary at 10k, and the transmission at 20k. Based on your 3 hole change video, you do change all 3 every 5k or do you follow the manual? If you do change all 3 at 5k, can you share your reasons for doing so? Thank you very much.
We change all three every time due to the miles we lay down. But you can follow the manual.

What's the bennefit of using 80W-90 in the transmission over using the Halrey Synthetic 20W-50 like harley recommends?
While the viscosity of 20W50 engine oil is roughly equivalent to a 75/80W90 gear oil, it is our understanding that the 20W50 deteriorates faster in the trans than gear oil does and given the miles we ride year round, we'd rather be safe than sorry. We change all 3 holes every 4k miles anyway, so not a huge deal but we've just always done it this way.
Would you suggest doing the 1k service or taking it in? I’m very mechanically inclined. I have a 2022 street glide special.
Depends on warranty stuff if that's a concern. A lot of dealerships near us require the first service to be done at the dealership. Realistically, the 1k service is what was shown in the video plus a checklist of various things like fluids, gasket checks etc.

How do you clean your engine chrome part. Mine has mineral build up
Our motors are blacked out, but on previous bikes with quality chrome, we'll use a spray cleaner, then lightly rub it down with a fine wire mesh which cleans the chrome right up. If it's an older chrome or sub-par chrome job, it could flake or scratch though

When servicing a K&N filter, shouldn't you flush with water from the inside of the air filter to the outside?

With all the riding you guys do you ever have to top off your oil in between oil changes ?
Yep, it happens from time to time. Last trip, we did a 4,000 mile week and had some long stretches at high speed through the hot desert which can burn up a little oil. We try to carry an extra quart or at least check it throughout the trip, or between oil changes in general to keep it level
Nothing critical of your methods. Just an FYI on a tool you may not be aware of. I have traveled with a tool called a Lean Right. It is a heavy gauge, stamped, vinyl covered bar that is placed under the frame. It has a "Hook" formed for the Left, bottom frame rail and acts as a Right Side Jiffy Stand for basic maintenance or cleaning. It fits into a Harley's Hard Bag without hogging a lot of space. I do not represent Lean Right. I have carried one for the past couple decades during my travels. I have performed basic maintenance using it. It's especially handy for accessing the Primary. I found mine listed in the Tool section of one of the larger mail order catalogs.
Who sells the Lean Right? Have a hard time finding one.

So, a few days ago, I was changing my derby cover (bike on the kickstand), and had some fluid drizzle out (maybe quarter cup's worth). Would I need to top off with more? Or should it be at a safe level?
It's hard to say, but ideally (at least in M8 touring) you want to have a quart in the primary, so whatever spilled should be replaced
@@2LaneLife Thank you. I just dumped the remaining oil, and put in a fresh quart. When I poured the old oil into the empty quart, it spilled over. Looks like it was overfilled to start. This was my first time doing the change on this bike, myself, but it was easy.

My question is how many miles exactly do you guys put on each time before you change the oil?
We generally change every 3500 - 4000 miles

It should be fairly similar, but it wouldn't hurt to double check the recommended fluid volumes in the manual. Josh had a 2019 Low Rider with a 114 in it and he stuck with ~4.5 quarts engine, 1 in primary, 1 in transmission

I have a 2017 street glide. I bought this oil change in a box from maxima. My book says it holds 4 quarts of oil. Where is everyone getting 4 1/2 from? Also they send 2 quarts of primary oil. Only holds 1 quart.
2017's had 107's. Maybe 107 vs the current 114's? Good question, we'll look into that

Yes you can. We just did our first oil change on our 2024 road glide with this kit
You forgot one important step. With the bike hot and upright, remove the Crankshaft Position Sensor from the very bottom of the Motor. You need an Allen wrench to remove the one bolt. This sensor has a wire on it. Catch and measure any oil that comes out of the dry sump. If there is more than 6 oz. the bike is "Sumping" per H-D. See Service Bulletin M1450. This way you keep up with how much oil if any is going into the sump.

You aren't supposed to fill the oil till the stick says full, right? Which is the proper amount based on the stick measurement

@@gearsandgrit , 4.5 qts., check for oil filter leaks afterwards, no leaks, go for a short ride. Let bike sit for 1/2 hour, then measure on jiffy stand, if oil level hard to see on the dipstick, lay oily dipstick on a paper towel and roll dipstick away and see where oil stain on paper towel corresponds on the dipstick level, from tip of dipstick upwards.
What kinda oil for the air cleaner?

Good afternoon, for my Ultralimited 2019 M8 I would like to know if it is appropriate to put synthetic oil in the 20W50 engine, mineral oil in the primary and 80w90 mineral oil in the transmission? I’ve exactly kit from Maxima Oil like yours.
Or what is your recommendation?
I take my trike to the dealer I pre paid when I bought it and now I wish I didn’t they over fill it and I feel your pain with your broken leg I had one for over three years
You didn't show proper primary level . Great video guys , but 30 minutes ? More like 1 hour at least . Getting the bike , drain can , tools and area ready . THEN , you can begin to change the fluids very carefully so you don't make a mistake , or a huge mess on the floor . Oh , and don''t forget cleanup and putting all the tools away . Better make that 1 1/2 hour job if everything goes absolutely perfect .

With a brand new motor, it's extremely important to do the 1,000 mile service as there is residual metal shavings from machining that can accumulate during those initial heat cycles and miles that are not good to have circulating throughout your motor, transmission etc.
Amongst other things..
A O ring costs $1.00 why not changing it? And never run the engine idle to warm up to change the oil!
We ride the bikes around the block a few times first. We talk about getting the bike warmed up. And we change the rings religiously. We also change our oil more frequently than most.
I don't think anybody wanna tight tgat filter with a Wrench.
To each their own. We hand tighten and then give it a little snug, not over tighten but a little snug.
Lost me at 1:53 "comes with a 17mm nut on top so you can tighten up the oil filter with a wrench"...
The filter has a 17mm hex nut attached to it so that a standard wrench or socket can be used to remove the filter rather than an oil filter wrench that goes on top or around the filter.
@@2LaneLife No, I get it, I love the hex head oil filters, but what was stated in the video was that you can use it to tighten the oil filter. NO ONE recommends anything other than "hand-tight" on an oil filter.
You put to much oil in your primary. It holds no more then 30oz. Not a full quart.
Wow not changing a .03 cent oring because why ? No idea 🤷♂️. Holding your 30k bike up against a garage door frame is not a “neat trick “ unbelievable what people do and post .
