Except use 75/140 gear oil in the transmission
@@michaelmitchell5909 I used Lucas 20/50 in the motor and primary, and 75/140 in the trans. Shifts smoother and doesn't slam into 1st like it used to

It’s good to see that the oil is running out slow with the oil plug is in. It shows that the oil breather separators in the heads aren’t wore out.

II concur. I just went from a Honda VTX to a FLHTK9 Love the VTX AND the Ultra!). The info is priceless, and useful. I have always changed my own oil, except when it is covered by the dealers break-in period service (which was free). So now I can start doing mine on the Ultra..

Glad I saw this. I made the switch from sport bike to bagger this summer. Your videos are a huge help. The Harley I purchased seems to have been lacking a little on the maintenance side but it’s a great ongoing project.

I run the syn3 in all three of my holes as well and it's much cheaper to to do this myself and save a couple hundred bucks and it's easy with the proper tools along with common sense. I would also like to mention that the plugs have a magnet on the tip and if you have serious metal shavings on it you better get it checked out. Thanks again for the great video. Peace out brother !

gaknskk I do my own oil changes as well. The Harley-Davidson dealership technicians don’t use torq wrenches, they do everything by feel.
@@sikbaggers I have 2015, exact same color as yours. My bike is approaching 15K miles. At 15K, do I need to do a 3 hole change or just the oil change? 5k and 10k fluid changes were done by the dealership under the purchase service plan.

Every time I do oil change to my 2014 flhtk, I watch this video tutorial and it never fail, the channel it’s amazing for any kind project, and the good thing is, that he tells you even the tools you need and specification, and plus the funny don’t, guys don’t use your wife kitchen towels on any kind of project !!!!

T27 for the derby cover bolts, not T25 as stated. The T25 can appear to be the correct size as it is just slightly loose...and might even work on bolts that are not over-torqued (unlike mine). I ended up buggering one as a result of my trust in the internet and an hour's work turned into three. Put a tag up on the video or something. No one saves money if you hand out incorrect information.

WOW!!! Thanks for the warning on the torque specs. As a diesel mechanic I would have gone with the gorilla torque I normally use on the job. I can see I will have to make some adjustments to wrench on my own bike..... I knew it wasn't an M2 Bradley but I can't remember the last time I dealt with in/lbs.

Hate to point it out but the derby cover screw size is T27. Too many think it's T25 and strip it. Should also not use blue loc-tite on it either.
I went right out and checked. It is a T27 on my 2011 Road King. Video was very good. Thanks
Why not lock tight?
Brent Spencer just no need to use it. The screws are cheap pot metal and can shear off with the slightest extra torque. Using loc-tite on them will just be too much. Yes, you can heat them a little prior to removal but with 21yrs as a master tech I've yet to seen vibrate out and have more than my fair share of sheared off and stripped ones. The derby cover screws are not subject to the same heavy vibrations as other areas of the bike.
Still one of the best videos out there for changing your oil..

The torx head bolts on most HD Derby covers is a T27, not T25. A T25 will strip out the torx grooves.

Just to add some food for thought, I've got a 16 FLHXS and and an 05 Fatboy. I've put 75,000 on the Fatboy and changed all three oils countless times. I'm still using the factory O-ring on the oil drain plug, and the factory gasket on the derby cover, factory O-ring on the primary drain plug, etc. I keep both bikes in my garage and there has yet to be one drop of anything leaking. Not saying that there's anything wrong with changing em out every time, just showing that maybe it's not quite a "must do or else".
Well Ill have to say im shocked that your OEM o-rings are in that good of shape after 17 years and 75k miles....for the price of these things I would never re use them on my bikes or customers bikes...just not worth the risk.

Hey thanks man...Honestly I have never used anything but the Syn3 ...I have a 2014 SGS sitting in my garage right now, one of my good buddies, that has 94 thousand miles on it.,...yep...94k! Im talking hard miles! Only used Syn3 in it and has never had to have work done on that motor. Those results are really hard to argue with to honest. I have read all of the debates on amsoil and other brands...you can get lost in those debates there are so many. I have had several tell me that the amsoil will take the clunk out of the transmission...those are also the same people that are selling amsoil kits. Those who have used it have all said the same...once it gets hot the clunk is right back in there. I just stick to running the Syn3 in all 3 holes . If you take your bike to HD for the service thats whats your going to get as well unless you specify different. I guess it all comes down to what you are used to using.
I just changed oils on mine yesterday plus purged the engine. Greased the neck and foot brake lever zerk fittings while at it. Ready to go. EVO Rules!
Super easy to work on and you can save a ton of money by doping it at home. I like it...its relaxing to be honest.

hahaha nice! on this bike yes...syn3 in all 3 holes. HD changed the oil on this bike the first few times and thats what they used so I just stayed the same with it...I have used the amsoil kits and they work just as good.

Great help thank you. I can buy the oil filter wrench and a set of funnels for about 25 UK Bucks. The OEM 3 x oils, filter, o rings and gasket cost 106. Not sure what HD charge but last time I took it in they didn’t change the filter. So DIY it is from now on!! thank you! yes it is not needed...that pump will quickly fill that filter as soon as you start it..thats why important to run it and then check your oil level

I had my 1K mile service at the stealer and they put Syn3 in all 3 holes on my 19 Road King at it ran ok. I then did my next service and used Amsoil and it ran better and shifted much smoother and ran a little cooler. I used Redline for my last service and that’s all she wrote. Runs like a top, no clunking in gears and runs cooler.

I used the Red Line products for the first time and the transmission oil spooked the heck out of me, it looked as though I was pouring a pink smoothie into the fill hole.
Hey man saw this comment. Coming due for first change on the wifes 18 stree glide and 2nd on my 17 street glide. Any pros or cons to the redline now that you've been running it. Not sure Redline, Amsoil, or stick with Syn 3 ??
Honestly...I haven't noticed a lick of difference running Red Line from the OEM stuff.

Great video, quick tip I put a Ziploc bag around the oil filter plus the rags you mentioned, helps with the mess.
Nice tip! I may try that next time...Usually I cna get it out fast enough but it does spill a small amount...I didnt have much luck with the plastic oil catch things they sell....dripped fluiod everywhere lol

I really appreciate this video. I am going to do the 3-hole fluid change on my 2106 HD Triglide that has 110,000 miles. Since this is my first attempt at doing this, and because I am all thumbs (read barely know which end of a crescent wrench to use), your patient explanations are very helpful. Lol. After crawling under my trike, I am amazed how clean your under carriage is. Thanks again for this excellent video.

Thanks again for your help. Just completed my 3 hole fluid change. It went smooth enough that I also changed my air filter element and spark plugs. Had to be a little careful with my 2016 HD Triglide fluid specs. 3 quarts in the oil pan, 28 oz in the transmission, and 36 oz in my primary. I used my service manual to verify my fluid requirements. Thanks again for your excellent videos. I have liked and subscribed to your channel.

For the last six years every year I run this specific video in garage before I change my fluids on my SG, lol... "My friends are like what are you doing, I tell them don't worry about me, it's tradition by now." Thanks for the videos that become a tradition for some of us out there. lol

Try the filter drain funnel. No towels! Happy wife happy life. Lol. It you use the funnel, place under filter and punch one hole twords bottom back of filter and one on top back of filter to let air in to drain filter before removing. I let the filter drain while I drain the engine, then go back to the filter. No towels. No mess. Lol. No mention on fluid levels checked on the juffy stand or on the level bike but good info vid. Thanks for keeping the common Joe in his garage. Love it when you can ride wrench repeat. Shows you really do love the machine.

I’m so glad I watched this. I probably wouldn’t have noticed there was a different torque specs between the foot pound and inch pounds. I probably would have broke a bolt. And like you said in the beginning one of the guys told me that i will void my warranty if I did it my self and suggested I buy their maintenance plan with the bike that cost around $2700. Good to know now.
yep...thats how they get you my friend. Youre covered just mark it all down and youll be fine.
Take a red solo cup and cut out a side to go around the filter and it makes a great funnel when removing it
