    Been balancing my own MC tires this way for 25 years.....One top tip I would offer is before mounting new tire, take tire-less wheel on the balancer and find the TRUE heavy spot of the wheel. its not always the valve stem. Mark the wheel this way when you mount a tire with a dot indicating the light spot of tire, you can align the dot with the TRUE heavy spot of the wheel and this usually results in less weight required to get a perfect balance.

      Damn that’s great advice. Doing my first tire change on my motorcycle and will definitely use this tip. Assuming the tire I ordered that hasn’t arrived yet even has a dot.

      @@craiggoldstein2461 think I did ok. My tire did come with the yellow dot. Lined it up with the heavy part of the rim (which wasn’t the valve stem) and had to use 7 quarter oz weights to get it balanced. Decided to break the bead and tried it at with the yellow dot at the valve stem (valve stem ended up being at about 2 o’clock to the heavy part of the rim) and the yellow dot only took 6 weights to balance somehow. Was thinking of breaking the bead and spinning the tire around on the rim on the balancer to see where it landed the best balance without any weights and go from there but the service manual says not to exceed 3 oz and since it is only half that decided to just leave it alone. I would have been good either way I guess. I’m wondering if the yellow dot on the tire was incorrect.

      @@rivec33 Rivec, you clearly have a solid handle on the process. Well done sir! yes 1.5 ounce is OK and I would have left it alone too. What brand tire was it? I have a buddy who runs Shinkos (I tried talking him out of it) and did the last two for him same model Shinko....First one took 2.5 Ounces no matter what I did...the second one only 1 ounce....I think their quality control isnt the best.

    Years ago I worked in a tire shop that used bubble balancers. This was before high speed balancers were developed. They worked basically the same as what you are doing here.
    We would find approximately the amount of weight that was required to balance the heavy spot and then doubled that amount. The two weights were then placed 120 degrees from the heavy spot to make three areas of equal weight. We thought this would reduce the chance of the tire creating a wobble side to side. When you place the two weights you just move them a little one way or the other until the tire is balanced perfectly. This way you don’t have to trim the weights.

    I put an orbital sander against my bike frame at the wheel, (side of sander touching, and not the pad), with nothing touching the wheel like a chain, brake caliper. The vibration from the sander will reduce the friction of the bearings and the tire will rotate with the heavy point down. With spoke wheels I have used solder wrapped around the spoke at the rim for weights.

    Since a lot of weights are made of steel instead of lead, or if you are using spoke weights, if I need to split the weight, (ie need one and a half weights), I use two weights and spread them apart an equal distance from the light spot of the wheel. This averages out the effect of the weights on the light spot and brings the wheel in balance.

  • @callmeanythingbutlatefordinner
    @callmeanythingbutlatefordinner Год назад +9

    This is a demo of static balancing. It's also a good idea to split your balance weight up, putting 1/2 on each side of the rim, especially with today's wider tires. Adding all of the weight to only one side can result in uneven weight distribution (dynamic balance) causing wobble, shimmy, and excessive tire wear.

      I was going to make the same comment, static balancing is adequate when the wheels are relatively narrow. Loading the weights all on one side can exacerbate a dynamic imbalance, splitting them holds that side to side imbalance to a minimum.

    I don't know if it's been mentioned in the comments yet but I also turn the shaft 180 degrees, relative to the wheel, as a final check to ensure I'm not dealing with a cone to shaft off-centre issue or a slightly bent shaft.

    I have been ridding for 64 years and have always just wrapped thick solder around the spokes and has worked for 6 decades. Now that bikes have these tubeless wheels divide the weights for balancing. I think side loading these bearings just add friction to the rotating mass. When using those stick on weights put half on one side and half on the other side. That way there is no dynamic unbalance. That way it eliminates dynamic unbalance if just on one side that is just static balance. Now I just use internal balancing beads.

    Something i learned through cranckshaft balancing to help with finding that spot faster and easier is to introduce a tiny amount of vibration, using a tool like a grinder or a drill and place it on the table (or resting at the side of the balancer to make contact if it has thick rubber base) and turing it on. Despite being being very little, that vibration shake things up enough to help to move the wheel (and also the cranckshaft if you are balancing that) to the heavy spot.

    Have the No Mar balancing setup, same as this one and i have 3 tires that won't move or budge. I drop all 3 tires on there and they don't even move. I took the weights off all 3 tires and there should be a heavy spot but neither of the tires will shift to the heavy spot. I manually turn the tires 1/2 way, 1/4 way, 3/4 way and wait until the heavy side takes it but nothing .....

    A nice tip for racing/trackdays is to also mark the side of rim and tire so you can see if the tire slips on the rim. If you're using the tire/wheel combo for more then one session and it has twisted badly atleast you're able to spot it and have it rebalanced.
    A 600 has no problem turning the tire about 1/4 on the rim. Even if you're going light on the mounting lube :)

Lots of videos on how to do the zip tie method most don't care about their rotors like I do so use some wood blocks if you want to keep your rotors from contacting the ground or bench to keep from damaging them .
      I am in the process right now and it isn't that hard . My rims are all scratched up from previous owner and they need to be repainted so I didn't use wheel guards now I have a few more scratches to deal with my advice get them and use them ...

      Dude the most important part about mounting a tire is making sure the seals on both sides of the tire meet in the middle. The hole is smaller then the rim outside and it is not inside the rim. It's physics at work. Watch some vids on that. Some people use zip ties and some just put their knee on the tire opposite the side you are tire tooling on the tire. This dude probably has an excellent video on this going by his balancing video

    I use balancing beads, cost about $2.00 to do both tires. No equipment necessary and maintains balance thru the life of the tire. ABC balancing beads are statically charged and stays clinged to the inside of the tire and doesn't erode the inside of the tire.

  • @MultiPleaser
    @MultiPleaser Год назад

    What do you do if the bearings were hammered in one whack too much, and the wheel won't turn on the balance stand, but it will turn when torqued onto the bike?
    And did you ever notice that f it turns on the balance stand just fine, when torqued onto the bike, it squeezes the bearings and the tire won't turn? This makes me WANT to whack the bearings one extra time so it spins free when torqued onto the bike (to reduce rolling resistance, reduce wear on the bearings, save gas, etc).

      I was wondering the same. On my previous original factory tires, the weights were on one side on the outer side of rim. I just had tires replaced at Harley dealership and they put the weights across the entire rim. Not sure what is correct or poor workmanship.

    My local shop balances and mounts the tires for free (off the bike) if I buy the set from them…they also offer a deal where if I buy the rear the front is half off. I don’t know how this place stays in business but they’ve been around for 25plus years 🤷🏼‍♂️

    Great advice, good demonstration. I change and balance my own tires and balance this way. I bought a cbr1100 with a severely unbalanced front tire and it was scary dangerous beyond a certain *cough* point. I thought it was suspension or something else. After changing and balancing the new tire, it was vastly better (aka right)

    I keep seeing people saying to use tape to secure weights. Did you ever experience weights coming off? I find it that a proper clean/degrease of the spot where you put them on, will ensure they never come off.

    • @How2Wrench
      @How2Wrench  2 года назад

      We asked Shane this one and he wanted to respond..."Yes, we see many wheels without wheel weights coming into the service shop. I also see them in many intersections waiting for a red light...😉 The fact of the matter is, no matter how much you try to get everyone to perfection cleaning and placing on an exact surface curve to fully take advantage of the full tape also while preventing a edge for something to catch and rip it off (even while cleaning), the only way I've ever seen one NEVER come off, is with full tape coverage. I can't help but agree with twisted_void that attention to detail goes along way BUT most people don't have or care about it." Shane

    Always remove the old weights when you balance a new tire. Start fresh, same as you do an automobile wheel. You balance the whole thing as a rotating assembly. "Heavy" part of the rim doesn't matter, the end result does.

      Good question. I try to keep them as close to center as possible mote to "protect" them from getting knocked off. It takes a wheel wider than 6" to seem to really matter (from what I hear). I just have never had a wheel balance problem using this shown method.

    would it be possible to balance the tire and the wheel separately and match up the spots where they might balance each other out when the tire is put on the wheel?

    • @N269
      @N269 Год назад

      Absolutely! 1) find the heavy spot of the rim (without tyre). Mark it. 2) Balance the rim WITHOUT tyre. 3) Place tyre on rim, 1 bead ONLY. Find the heavy spot of the tyre. Mark the tyre heavy spot. 4) Rotate tyre so the TYRE HEAVY spot OPPOSITE heavy spot on rim. 5) Complete tyre install. 6) Remove weights from rim balance(2). 7) Balance wheel. I normally balance all wheels with their respective bitz (ie with brake discs and sprocket carrier).
      I have a junk front rim that is balanced perfectly and use that as my tyre weight finder for both front and rear tyres.

    Hello, great video - I'm about to embark on changing my own tyres and this has been superb. Apologies if you've answered this before (I may have missed it) - is there a rule of thumb as to where on the rim you put the weights once you've found the perfect position? By this I mean outer edge of the rim (where the originals were on your demo wheel), closer to the centre of the rim and also does left side/right side make any difference? Many thanks.

    • @How2Wrench

      Thanks Mark! We grabbed Shane quick and he said always tries to put closest to the center of the rim for less chance road debris would possible knock it off (hence another good reason for the "duct tape") With motorcycle wheels being pretty narrow compared to auto/truck wheels, he said he has never experienced with moving around the weight to see a measurable difference.

    I don’t use cones, I made some spacers that fit snuggly into the bearings, and it’s much better… the cones don’t need to be as tight as you did them, but as long as they don’t slip on the inner bearing race is enough… the harder you press the cones it, that come tighten the bearings to prevent them from turning freely…

      All thread would be gamble as far as accuracy of the threads for rolling on the bearings, and also for it being straight. Everything made has tolerances, and threads on all-thread would be looser tolerances than a precision ground rod that would come with nicer balancing stands (not critiquing the one in this video, I wasn't looking at the rod that close and have no interest in being negative). The cones themselves would also be looser, as threads are smaller than the diameter they are called by. A 3/8" thread has a major diameter smaller than 3/8". That said, if a current setup has the cones getting loose or not getting tight enough, then it might still be an improvement. I say all this as a mostly hobby/part time professional manual machinist that's also done some light reading of the machinery handbook for fun.

      I don't use them. Not because they don't work as it seems proven in other industry's, but mostly because its a mess for the tech...doing tires all day would create quite the mess and its hard enough to get techs to clean this area...lol

    The cones are superfluous.
    I built a balancer much the same as this , with the support bearings on the uprights. But I use a 19mm straight axle to support the wheel. The 19mm straight axle is undersized for the wheel bearings. The wheel self aligns on the axle because gravity forces the ID of the wheel bearings to do that.
    The rest of the alignment is normal and is always reproducible which proves the balance is correct. And the wheel never wobbles on the balancer.
    The use of cones actually eliminates that self alignment under gravity *if the cones are not tight* .
    So the cones are superfluous.

    Painters tape is lighter and less sticky if you're removing it.

    I just used balance beads. No problems.

    Always balance the wheel with the sprocket, otherwise it'll throw the balance out when fitted
    You've overcomplicated the method. Simply find the light spot (it'll be at the top when let to settle); turn the wheel 90° and add your weight at 90°. With the correct weight, the wheel will not move. Done.
    Think of it like a seesaw or a two blade propeller - as long as the opposite points are of equal weight, there will be balance.
    Check the bearings before attempting to balance. Any imperfections in a bearings (in the wheel or on the stand), or on the shaft could cause a false reading.

      Yes I do! The final cleaned up way at end of the video shows it.

    You didn't wait for the wheel to settle once, meaning you got the heavy spot wrong. It even moved CCW and then CW a bit after you left it to get the scissors, and a bit when you checked it the last time. The technique is right, but you have to do it right too, if you want it perfect. If you're happy with 98%, then you're good.

    Has anyone tried match balancing the tyre to the wheel , meaning take all weights off and check balance then deflate and rotate tyre on wheel and check balance again and so on , then after you get as close as possible then add smallest weight needed rather than just putting tyre on wheel and adding whatever weight needed big or small

      If you put the tire's light spot mark at the valve stem, you're essentially doing that. That's why the manufacturers mark their tires with a colored dot on the outside or a sticker on the inside of the tire. It surprises me how many dealers don't pay attention to the mark on the tires. 🤦🏻‍♂️

      @@atvtinker01unfortunately a lot of tire manufacturers don’t do the dot anymore
