As I have said time and time again.... It starts with declaring books that truthfully have no significance "keys". You find some obscure reason to declare that dollar book important and you get other lemmings to parrot it (because they have that book too) and pretty soon the price goes up as people who have the discernment of a three year old run out and buy up this book that , for the first time, shows Aunt Mae wearing pants. The next step is having this book, that wasn't important for the 40 years since it was published, slabbed. Eventually though, and I saw it at Heroescon, you won't be able to give some of these books away. I dare say there will be a day there will be stabbed books in dollar bins if it isn't already happening somewhere. Your rant is spot on though. Enjoyed seeing the books.

6:40 Super Cool. Happy for you. A connection to those memories. Yes, we all seem to have those special books from our earliest collecting memories. LOVE COMIC BOOK ART. ESPECIALLY late 60s to Early 80s.

At the heart of the spec game is graded comics. I have said all along that grading should be used for first appearances of major characters and issues where something of true significance happens ( ie: something that effects the book going forward). Getting books graded simply today you have a 9.8 of something is ludicrous. I saw the fulfillment of that at Heroescon. There were several vendors selling high grade copies (9.4 and above) for $10. Next to fall (if it hadn't already) is the variant cover scam and the"key" issue myth. Just because the comic shows Spider-Man eating a hotdog for the first time does not make it worth grading nor does it make it a "key". Enjoyed seeing the books. Agree on all points made.

As a slab hater myself, I don’t understand why people spend money slabbing just to resell their books. They are missing out on a huge chunk of potential buyers who want raw books. Chuck Rozanski even stated in an interview he doesn’t slab anymore because it is a waste of money.

Hey Steve. Very cool, Billy The Kid#84. Very cool Alter Ego#188 & Back Issue#152, yeah Tomorrow's puts out alot of fantastic comic related mags. Very cool Shock SuspenStories#1 reprint. Cool, Steve Canyon. Very cool Marvel Magazine Group Hulk, fantastic interior art. Very cool Famous Monsters, Basil Gogos Creature cover, ouch i would rather have left my clothes than that FM's issue😂. Very cool Doc Savage-The Frightened Fish cover, he looks a bit like Sub Mariner on that cover. That Paramount Records sounds like an interesting read, very cool cabinet pieces, speaking of records i have some rare 45's & Albums. Speaking of actual comic book stores, the first time i stepped foot into a actual comic store, was about 1980 to 82 or 83, my friend & i would stop at a 7-eleven get a slurpee, then go to this particular comic store those were the days. I agree 100 percent about your take on CGC, couldn't have said it better & these stupid sayings like keys & raw books, i need keys to get into my apartment😂. People have found hairs in the cases & books damaged by CGC, i saw this video on youtube showing a grading company, probably CGC handling a Superman#1 very poorly. As you well know comics are meant to be read & enjoy the fantastic ads, letter pages etc. Last but not least fantastic Charlton War AOK from Bill. Sorry for the very long comments.

Hi Steve! This was a great video, a lot of fun to watch, and a well worth the time investment to watch it. I admit that I put off watching it until today so I could sit back and relax, and watch your video in one sitting. I laughed out loud during portions of your rant because I've been saying similar things about CGC, variant covers, and comic book speculation for several years. I don't have a channel, so it was very cool to hear someone else give voice to my opinions. Thanks for the video! Take care!

I'm glad to see a new video and I agree with your "rant". I agree with you on just about every point. The slabbing of pulps is plainly ludicrous. I am somewhat fearful of how that may affect the price of pulps and the upcoming Pulpfest.

I've been looking at UK comics auctions on whatnot recently, the amount of people selling "key comics" on there is crazy. They don't even know it's a key they're just saying they think it is, I don't know how many people buy into this, anyway great comics especially the 80 pager, I'll keep an eye out for that All Star Comics Index as I wasn't aware of that one.

Very good and articulated observations of the whole speculation situation. The artificial inflation of prices based only on inane and really unimportant aspects such as newstand vs direct shop editions is something I never understood. To me a "collector" is someone who reads and enjoys the stories, the artwork, the histories, the characters, the continuities and the basic fun of comic books enough so that continuing to seek that enjoyment is THE driving factor for buying more NOT an endgame financial gain. That's just my opinion and I'm sure it's not the more prevalent opinion and like the saying goes, opinions are like (place body part here) ...everybody's got one😉 Always enjoy your videos, Steverino, and would love to see you doing livestreams as well, amigo!

I liked the variety that Charlton war comics had in their anthologies. DC was almost all WW2 land combat. Marvel only had Sgt. Fury at that time. I read them starting in the late 70's into the early 80's. Charlton was the third biggest publisher in terms of titles, seems like.

I'm a little late to this one, but a Happy New Year to you as well! I hope you've been doing well. I really enjoyed this. You have such a nice set up and cool coffee cup! That is quite a haul and so many great covers! That's cool that you work(ed) at a local comic shop. I always thought that would be a cool job. My Wife is the same, very thoughtful and tries and really does good with gift giving. We are like you in the way of not going overboard with all that either. The Iron Man cover art is really cool! You referenced Enemy Mine. It was one of my favorite movies growing up and I must say that I am with you when it comes to the varied things that in a sense make up this hobby (the music, movies, toys, games, etc. and even the types). Anyway, I hope all is well your way. ~Eric

Very cool haul video. I know about John Adkins Richardson. I own the same comic. He was an art history professor, perhaps in the Midwest. He did the Maxor of Cirod stories in a big fanzine from the 1970s called Rocket's Blast Comic Collector. The book you have is a collection from that run. I first heard of Richardson when I was a teenager, reading through his book on doing comics titled, The Complete Book of Cartooning. It is still my favorite how to on comics. A few years later in university, my drawing professor (who hated comics) told me about his professor, and it happened to be Richardson. He recalled how his mentor was getting into the comics, which was something my drawing instructor just couldn't understand. Richardson also did a single issue of an independent comic with Richard Corben called Fever Dreams. I think it's mostly Corben work though. Besides Maxor and his book on cartooning, I don't think he did anything else in comics, although he did write an art history book or two.
