    New to your channel and am loving your videos. I'm right there with you...I buy very few current titles (I AM a sucker for an Alex Ross cover though) and spend my money & time on back issues and collected stories. I love reading the comic history magazines--Back Issue, Alter Ego, Jack Kirby Collector, and many of the now defunct older titles like CBG, Wizard, and Hero. Not to mention the countless comic book history books and creator biographies available. As far as today's market, I decided a few months ago to pretty much ignore it. I lost 98% of my collection in a fire 10 years ago. I had a few nice key issues but luckily none of the big ones. Now I hunt what I call "Keys to Me"--the books I lost that mean something to me--the books that remind me of what I was doing and what life was like at the time I first got them. I'm all about nostalgia and embrace it. Finally...I think I''m right on this...The Creature packaging is a throw-back to the vintage Penn-Plax Creature of the Black Lagoon aquarium decoration. Would love one but a bit pricey these days.

      Love Backissue magazine. I oftentimes use it to help identify stuff I missed out on back in the day to search out and read.

      Welcome to the channel and thank you for the kind words. You and I think along the same lines. Collecting for me is the whole package, history, nostalgia and fun. The value aspect takes a back seat to all of that.
      Sorry about you losing your collection in a fire. But you hit the nail on the head, by getting books that are "keys" to YOU. Very practical and fun way of collecting. I have books in my collection that are not worth that much but to me they are. As you say "keys' to me. Thank you for such an insightful comment.
      Thank you for the additional information on the Creature From the Black Lagoon figure. Interesting. Now, I wanna see what one looks like.
      How I miss the CBG. I had a lot of letters printed in there along with the Comic Book Marketplace. The Comic Reader was another favorite. As, always, thank you for stopping by and commenting. Your support is greatly appreciated. Best/Steve

    Thank you for reminding me about Comic Revue. I should still have some early issues (when they were called "Comic Review") in one of these magazine boxes. (I wasn't cataloging things well enough back then like I am now.) ... I get caught up in the "fear of missing out" every now and then, and caught up with a variant cover every now and then. But it's not as much a problem since I hardly get new comics. Where I get burned is when some comic that's been $1 for decades (and so I put off getting it) gets hyped into a $100 book overnight. I'm now at the point where I just focus on what I can afford and forget the rest. 5 years from, those books may be worthless, so I'll get them then. ... Thank you for the video!

    • @charlton6674
      @charlton6674  3 года назад

      Hiya Jackson, I do recall the early editions. Because, they had the Yellow Kid in them. You hit the key phrase, every now and then. I think we all do at a certain extant, even us "older" collectors.
      Yes, the pricing on books are so "arbitrary." They are pricing books that make no sense or there is not a reference as to why the book, like you said goes from 1.00 to 100.00 overnight.
      Good way to think. Focus on the good things that you can afford. That way you are never disappointed. As, always, thank you for stopping by and commenting. Your support is greatly appreciated. Best/Steve

    I enjoy videos like this when you share your thoughts on collecting and the current market. I was out of picking up spec books for quite awhile but now the market is changing so drastically day to day its become fun to jump back in a manipulate the market right back by finding the specs before the LCS's can catch them. I've been sold a few for quite a bit of money and then turn around and buy what I enjoy. Speaking of what I enjoy those Comics Revue like to be very fun reads. Take care brother.

      Hiya, Mike. I hope all is well. Thank you for the kind words. Glad you are able to pick up books for the collection by selling these spec books. The market is crazily changing daily. Glad you can keep up with it. It would wear me out. I cannot process that far ahead or keep up with the craziness. As, always, thank you for stopping by and commenting. Those Comics Revue are just treasures. It seems like reading and enjoying comics is a lost art.
    I too laugh when I see vids that tell you want comics you should buy. How do they know what I enjoy!
    To me comics are personal and there is no “one size fits all” dynamic.
    Seeing comics as commodities seems to be the trend which is a shame because I’ve gotten more entertainment and joy from them as anything else.
    I’m also reading comics and having a blast doing it. Thanks for keeping it real.👍

      You hit the nail on the head, comics are personal. And I wish these collectors would stop trying to be the "cool kid" and just what they enjoy, not what they are told to enjoy. As always, thank you for stopping by and commenting. Your support is greatly appreciated. Best/Steve

      Yes, now that you mention it, I do remember getting in from time to time in the late 80's early 90's because it had the Yellow Kid. It was more newsprint if I recall correctly. I really enjoy this new format. High quality. And I love The Phantom. As, always, thank you for stopping by and commenting. Your support is greatly appreciated. Best/Steve

    Cockrum was inspired by JLA 56. I agree about the current state of the hobby. As long as there are suckers who fall for the trap there will always be dealers of madly fleece them like sheep. Magic beans never looked so good. Enjoyed seeing the books.

    That Comics Review looks like a gold mine.
    There are bargains a plenty for those who hunt...I still like to keep my toes in the new comic books, but I am well aware they are not great value...especially because you have to try a lot to find the ones you'd like. I ping pong back and forth, reading comics from different eras.

    • @sleepyreader666
      @sleepyreader666 3 года назад

      Seems some collectors are desperate to make more things valuable, like issues of Foom or the Journal with ads or illustrations.

    • @sleepyreader666

      Definitely the downside of social media...people collecting to impress other collectors...seems ultimately pointless...

    I love the Creature. I love that you like the Justice League Quarterly. My memory is I was not a fan. But maybe I will need to check them out again. On your rant: Amen Brother Amen. What is that tower radio behind you. Is that vintage? Is that doc Savage figure? Whatever it is , it’s cool
    Later man. Great video

      Hey there buddy. I hope you are feeling well. I know you are going through a lot and I hope this finds you better. The radio tower sadly, is not vintage. Its a limited set from Crosley. It is called the "Empire." It has a lighted dial and a tape deck on the side. Looks good and to me sounds good. I mostly play old time radio shows on it. And, yes that is Doc Savage on top of the radio. Good eye. Get better, Jess. As, always, thank you for stopping by and commenting. Your support is greatly appreciated. Best/Steve

    🤓 Comic strips! Comic strips , yes indeed Steve👍! Comic Revue, Hogans Alley, Nemo, Dragon Lady Press, The Comic Reader, The Menomonee Falls Gazette , The Menomonee Falls Guardian, Golden Funnies (later renamed Vintage Funnies), Tony Riaola's Pacific Comics reprint collections are some of the comic strip publications I have in addition to raw comic strip sections I saved over the years or bought at conventions. Now my comic strip reading includes two digital newspaper archive sites. Not to mention the comic strip comic books I have like Tip Top , Famous Funnies , King Comics and a few others then there's Comic Book Plus the website that has both comic strips and comic strip comic books. Oh yeah , and the hardcover reprint books and comic strip history books that I got during the 1970s nostalgia craze period of pop culture. Just recently viewed on RUclips the 1951 Gasoline Alley film starring Scotty Becket (former Little Rascal) as Corky Wallet , been listening to the Gasoline Alley radio show on internet archive. 😎I consider myself a member of the "in" crowd! "In" defined as individually interested in intellectually invigorating images!
    Those JL books are fun reads and IMO bring back fond memories of the Archie Mighty Heroes of the 1960s with their off beat adventures.
    CFTBL definitely one of my top favorite Universal monster films! The Dell Comic one shot did a little alteration on the story but IMO the alteration would have made a great film in itself. 🤔let me see now, do I need an education on what to enjoy? 🤔I'll give it some thought.

    Time to start talking some sense about keys and first appearances. People who don't care about comics come into the hobby to make money off of other people who don't know any better. Protecting the hobby means ensuring people enjoy what the hobby is about.

    You say that it isn't actually a first appearance. I disagree with you on that because the character did appear in that magazine before anything else so that is Leonardo's first appearance. But I agree with you that it is ridiculous that would bring it way up in value. Daredevil number 115 doesn't go for hundreds and hundreds of dollars even though it features Wolverine in an advertisement. Which makes me think that people pay that much for The Comics Journal number 50 because they know TMNT number 1 is way too expensive and rare to obtain. Now I'm certainly not saying Hulk 181 isn't expensive, but TMNT 1 (first edition) goes from $20,000 to 60,000 and Hulk 181 goes from about $800 to 4,000. TMNT 1 is of course much rarer than Hulk 181 because there are only about 2,000 copies of TMNT 1. But actually how rare is Hulk 181? Comics from the 30s, 40s,and 50s are rare because of world war 2 paper drives, the Frederic Wertham witch hunt, and of course they would get thrown away because they were considered disposable entertainment. Now in the 60s, 70s, and 80s there were of course still people who would throw them away, but not nearly as much as in the previous decades. So it's all really about supply and demand. Hulk 181 has a big (or average, at the very least) supply, but a bigger demand. The Comics Journal 50 has a big supply, but a bigger demand. TMNT 1 has a small supply and a lot of people want it. So that's why I think comic books can go for such insane prices.

      You have brought up very valid points and ones that we as collectors ponder on daily. At least, I do ;-). But, I do understand what you are saying, however a spot illustration or and ad is not a first appearance to me. People do go back on forth on this depending which book they have or don't have. Look at Gobbledygook #1 mindset. I don't agree with being the first appearance. Like you said about rarity but no one care about it if it was not for the AD of TMNT. I realize folks are on either side of the fence with this.

    So someone who wants that issue of Comic Journal for the "first appearance ", and gets it slabbed... can't even enjoy the so called first appearance because it's all sealed up. Kills me, just showing they are getting it for bragging rights or spec and investment.
