I needed a replacement block for a 1930 Model A coupe. I bought a used block that had been in a combine per my rebuild shop. There was no number stamped on the block as most farm equipment from Ford did not put a serial number on the blocks. Restamped the old number on the block and kept going with the rebuild. All good.

Great project. I’m sure you know this but for the novice… if the oil pan has sludge the area under the valve cover with be sludged up too. Must clean and make sure the oil drain back holes (3 Of them) are clear of sludge, the main bearings depend solely on these drain back holes for lubrication. It’s good practice to spin the engine over after cleaning all the sludge to make certain that the pump is pumping oil to the area and that oil is getting all the way to the back drain back hole of the engine . While the valve cover is open check valve clearances too . .015” on all valves. My 29 had negative clearance on the front and the rear exhaust valves (had to by 2 new valves as they were slightly burnt from not closing. I lapped all the valves and now she runs like a top!

When I was a boy back in the 50s, I had 2 neighbors that has these. they had the original hood and cab on them, but the both had 55 gal barrels on the back. The barrels were cut in half lengthwise and were placed in the bed side by side, then filled with dirt for weight. they added plows on the front and used them to plow all the neighbors driveways. Interesting & professional work on the Model A. You say it may be 50hp but I would think with the high comp. head, headers, carb ,electronic ignition etc, probably a lot more. That will be hard on the babbit if driven hard. Once you start moding these old Fords, stopping & reliability require more mods. Good to see someone working on old cars who knows what they are doing!. Cheers. NZ.

A lot more than 50 hp? ROFLMAO. You can do all the "upgrades" you want on a junk shortblock and all you'll gain is a junkier shortblock. There's nothing about babbit that makes it less reliable if "run harder" as long as the engine speed is kept "stock". And "making power" on higher rpm alone doesn't do a damn thing in the way of making a vehicle "quicker".
