The end of the night.
The stillness of Mineral at night is hauntingly beautiful, a quiet that seems to hold its breath, broken only by the distant, the wail of a train whistle echoing through the mountains. The rhythmic clatter of wheels on steel cuts through the stillness of the night, a ghostly reminder of the logging trains that once roared through the forest. It’s easy to imagine the glow of candlelight in long-forgotten camps, the murmur of voices, and the creak of timber under a blanket of stars. Here, the air feels alive with memories, as if the mountains themselves still carry the heartbeat of a bygone era. Then Rowdy speaks.

Job Satisfaction at Mt. Rainier Scenic Railroad

Shorts are easy to upload. We know y'all love the long-form videos, but they take some time to do (don't worry, we're working on keeping a steady flow). Shorts take about 4.73 minutes of time to upload. Let us know if these are of any interest and we'll keep 'em coming.
From the Vault: Crosshead Repair
Просмотров 2,3 тыс.3 месяца назад
Footage "from the vault." Mt. Rainier Scenic Railroad's shop crew sits back, kicks their feet up, and enjoys a steak dinner. Just kidding. The team makes a new crosshead slipper for the Polson 70 before weekend operations. Lots of boring filming on the boring machining in this video as the clock ticks down for there crew before its go time on the chooch.

Big Heavy Things in Far Away Lands - MRSR Visits North Carolina Transportation Museum

Whew! We were so sneaky and secretive, weren't we? The cat is out of the bag, we bought a few passenger cars! Big heavy things in far away lands! We just adore the folks at the N.C. Transportation Museum - they've got a fantastic site, team, and we're just so happy we had an excuse to visit.
Out of Juice - Mt. Rainier Scenic Railroad Travel Blog

We're getting to the real work soon, but here's a short snippet of Rowdy & Bethan's travels to faraway lands to look at big heavy things. Note: Mt. Rainier Scenic Railroad has a 1941 rule. If objects were built prior to 1941, we are confident in our abilities to maintain and operate such equipment. If objects are built post-1941, they're likely to combust in our presence. Next video up soon...
It's been a bit...road trip planning.

This isn't our day to day but when you buy big things in far off lands, there's some pre planning work that needs to be done. The shop crew started filming after several hours of Bethan trying to get Rowdy to agree to fly cross-country for the greater good to inspect the really big things in far off lands that they both decided to buy...
Run of the mill Maintenance of Way on Mt. Rainier Scenic Railroad

This is sort of a day like any other. Brian, Rowdy and Dean (volunteer) are out doing some MOW, repairing a significant dip in the active segment before weekend operations. We're fortunate to have skilled employees and volunteers as well as a tamper and regulator to help with track maintenance and repair. This episode is especially special because we actually caught our elusive Roadmaster, mast...
We Work Hard with the Money - MRSR Porter No. 5

We'll work real hard for your money. Inspired by Donna Summer, Mt. Rainier Scenic Railroad has produced our very first music video, "We Work Hard with the Money." What we're saying is, we'll do just about anything to solicit donations for the restoration of Porter No. 5. Check it all out and throw $5 at the 5 at wfim.org/porter5

Welp, we're doing it, we're really doing it. Restoring it and running it on the mainline (err, depending on your definition of mainline)! We launched our official press release (wfim.org/blog) and started fundraising to get this sucker back in service! Many thanks to the NRHS for a $10,000 grant - which will help us rebuild the running gear (and run it on the mainline). Every dollar helps, and ...
Epic Video Footage: A Day with @WestCascadeRail

Nathaniel, our favorite 19-year-old volunteer is studying videography (with a fancy name), he's also a really, really great person! Here's a collection of his footage, edited by Rowdy, who doesn't actually have a middle name, despite his insinuations in the video.
The return from New Reliance

Remember when we went to get the box car and the caboose from New Reliance some months back? Well, we had intended for that to be a far more immersive experience. However, the weather stopped us from filming as much as we had wished. Nathaniel was on hand to gather drone footage of that day for the video that never happened. Here is some of what he got! @WestCascadeRail

Such a good video. Completely open and forthright. I'm from Utah, and we're home to the Heber Valley Railroad and it's locally-beloved 2-8-0, UP 618. 618 has been down since 2010 with absolutely minimal communication from its operators about the work that's been done, what needs doing, and what money and resources are needed to get there; only the annual promise that it'll be 'done for the summer of (insert the current year)'. I think they think they're preserving hope or whatever by keeping it under wraps and making false promises, but if they were open about the project like what you guys are here, I think it would inspire more public interest and help bring in more funding. Just my two cents. Anyways, awesome video, and love the work y'all are doing.

@8:30 Regarding LPA II - I'll pick some up and try it. Right now I'm slowly coating the entire museum i volunteer at in FluidFilm (it's basically just lanolin). Look into it - I started using it on cars in the Great Lakes Snowbelt area. I coated the suspension components and brake drum exterior on my wife's car in 2014 and 10 years later still basically zero rust. That's after 5 years of northern, salty winters and 5 years of gulf-coast tropical summers. You can buy it in bulk and apply it with an air-sprayer.
