Grand, just sitting down with a nice cup of tea, you guys are amazing (apart from Rowdy, he's got a lot to learn, maybe keep him with the fisher price train set😮) 😊all the best from sunny Troon Scotland
He’s like our live steam locomotives at this point, part of the museum collection even if we can’t quite figure out what to do with them. I’m sure we’ll find a use for him someday.
At the museum I used to volunteer at, if you broke something, you got to fix it. That's how you learn not to do it again. I forgot to undo the safety chains between two cars when uncoupling once, the engine pulled away and the chains held and ripped the handrails right off the end of the coach and bend the handbrake staff. They were SUPPOSED to break before that happened, but it turns out our late blacksmith was a little TOO good at what he did. That was a fun fix. I always double triple checked safety chains after that!
So, was it just too much of a fire too soon? I assume the rapid expansion broke the bolt, wonder why just that one in particular? (I gotta learn more about boilers lol)
@@kakinokitsune4487 Still, firing up or shutting down too quickly can overly stress the boiler and can cause bolts to bust like that, flexible bolts or not. Both of the engines I deal with have flexible bolts, and we’ve busted bolts in them.
Don’t want any dirt or particles getting into the air valves. Painters tape isn’t a for sure way to keep everything out but it’s the thought that counts
Aren’t steam engines all sorts of fun??? Only someone who’s a wee bit nutty would work on one of those things! Now if you’ll excuse me, I’ve got a steam engine to go work on…..
Did Rowdy just say, "steam makes me poop"? 🤣 You guys do amazing work! Thanks for sharing your stay bolt adventures.
Yes, yes he did. His legs regularly go numb during his bathroom breaks.
@@mtrainierrail 🤣
I get the impression that Rowdy says a lot of things when the day is long

@@mtrainierrailI hate flying but I live in Georgia and seeing number 5 is on my list of steam engines I’m wanting to see run
@@mtrainierrail I mean, at least he has a fire lit most of the time 😂
great video guys, funny and educational 😁👍

Nice work keeping the 70 in good order. Sucks you had to stop working on the 5 to deal with it though! 😅
I don't understand why you didn't heat the rivet. What was the reason for that?
Food makes you poop, Rowdy. Food and time.

Weakest link fails first. Heating up or cooling down too quickly puts unnecessary stress on the boiler and firebox.
The 70 doesn't have flexible stay bolts

@@TravisDGordon I've had a problem with a pacific Coast Shay or a 4-8-4 even though they were a bit stubborn about getting lit off from a cold start
Hi Rowdy, Stupid question here, Is there a reason why you used Blue Tape?
